What Is Social Anxiety?
Social Anxiety Disorder, also known as Social Phobia, is characterized by a fear of being negatively judged by others. Anxiety may be experienced in a variety of social situations, including:
  • public speaking participating or presenting at meetings talking with a group of people being assertive with others dating or talking to romantic interests being watched while writing or eating having one-on-one conversations talking with authority figures
Many people feel temporary discomfort in these situations, because social anxiety is a normal part of life. However, people with social anxiety disorder experience fear in situations like these to the point that it causes them problems and missed opportunities. They may worry about upcoming social obligations for days in advance. They may experience physical symptoms such as a pounding heart, trembling or shaking, difficulty breathing, or other panic-like feelings when in a feared social situation. In an attempt to manage their anxiety, they might begin avoiding the situations that make them feel anxious, resulting in a limiting and unfulfilling lifestyle. Checklist for Signs of Social Anxiety Please take a moment to think about whether any of the following statements apply to you. If you answer "yes" to some of these statements, you may benefit from treatment for social anxiety.

Social anxiety is a recently identified disorder that, according to recent studies, may affect up to 7% of the population in any given year. As such, it is one of the least understood but most pervasive psychological problems in the US, with as many as 15 million people experiencing severe and persistent emotional distress on a daily basis, most without having a clue that their condition is a recognized mental health disorder that is largely treatable. Because of the recency in identifying the diagnosable condition of social anxiety, the disorder is poorly understood by both the general public and professional clinicians. tAPir has created this social anxiety section as an educational and support resource to spread the word that social anxiety is real AND treatable. To the Mental Health Center Social anxiety disorder, also called social phobia, is an anxiety disorder in which a person has an excessive and unreasonable fear of social situations. Anxiety (intense nervousness) and self-consciousness arise from a fear of being closely watched, judged and criticized by others. A person with social anxiety disorder is afraid that he or she will make mistakes and be embarrassed or humiliated in front of others. The fear may be made worse by a lack of social skills or experience in social situations. The anxiety can build into a panic attack . As a result of the fear, the person endures certain social situations in extreme distress or may avoid them altogether. In addition, people with social anxiety disorder often suffer "anticipatory" anxiety the fear of a situation before it even happens for days or weeks before the event. In many cases, the person is aware that the fear is unreasonable, yet is unable to overcome it.

Social Anxiety Group We meet on Saturdays from 1pm to 4pm in Havre de Grace , Maryland. This is exit #85 off interstate 95. Meetings are held in my home in a relaxed comfortable setting.
Our meetings begin with listening to a CBT audio tape from Dr Richards Overcoming SAD series. This lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour. Often times either I or past members will teach this material rather than listen to the tape. We then discuss the cognitive material for this session and how it might relate to our own life and behaviors. This is followed by a short break. What follows are behavioral group and individual exercises. These, like the tapes, are progressive and build up and become more challenging as participants feel ready to move up on their individual anxiety behavioral hierarchy. There are a minimal number of behavioral exercises in the first few sessions but group members invariably begin to look forward to this part of our meeting as the most fun and rewarding. As we progress in the 20 tape series the behavioral exercises are slowly expanded. Participation in the activities is completely voluntary. No one is coerced into participation; however, they are encouraged to "stretch" themselves just a little each week.

Social Anxiety Disorder
What is Social Anxiety Disorder? Social phobia, also called social anxiety disorder, involves overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. People with social anxiety disorder have a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work or school, and other ordinary activities. While many people with social anxiety disorder recognize that their fear of being around people may be excessive or unreasonable, they are unable to overcome it. They often worry for days or weeks in advance of a dreaded situation. Social anxiety disorder can be limited to only one type of situation- such as a fear of speaking in formal or informal situations, or eating, drinking, or writing in front of others, or, in its most severe form, may be so broad that a person experiences symptoms almost anytime they are around other people. Social Anxiety Disorder can be very debilitating-it may even keep people from going to work or school on some days. Many people with this illness have a hard time making and keeping friends. Social anxiety disorder is caused by a minute change in the way the Amygdala, the small organ in the brain responsible for the anxious response, reacts during times of anxiety. In anxiety disorders, this organ produces inappropriate levels of anxiety and ity is this whicj must be addressed directly in order to be free from excessive anxiety and the thoughts and sensations it produces.

Social Anxiety Support Do you suffer from inappropriate levels of anxiety? If you do, you probably also suffer from social anxiety disorder to some extent. Social anxiety disorder manifests itself in a variety of ways, from blushing to panic attacks when confronted by a social situation. So, what is, (and why do you need), social anxiety support? Social anxiety support comes in a variety of forms but there is only one solution to anxiety disorder because, there is only one cause. The Amygdala is a small organ in the brain. It's role is to control the anxiety response. When this organ becomes disrupted due to stress or other life circumstances, anxiety disorders can forme. The Amygdala acts like a switch; when it becomes stuck in the on position in anxiety disorders we then require help for the disorder. When the disorder includes social anxiety, sufferers then feel that they require what they call social anxiety support...THEY DON'T!
What they actually need is a swift, targeted and permanent SOLUTION!

SOCIAL ANXIETY The primary distinguishing feature of Social Anxiety, also known as Social Phobia, is an intense, recurrent fear of social or performance situations. Individuals with Social Anxiety are excessively afraid of acting in a manner that will be perceived as embarrassing, or of exhibiting anxiety symptoms that others will observe and judge negatively (e.g., profuse sweating, shaky hands, trembling voice). Exposure to the feared social situation results in an immediate and intense level of anxiety, sometimes to the extent of having a panic attack. This anxiety and its associated avoidance behaviors cause significant emotional distress, and may considerably interfere with daily functioning and interpersonal relationships. Some examples of situations feared by those with Social Anxiety include:
  • public speaking
  • eating in public
  • drinking in public
  • writing in public
  • dating
  • using public restrooms
While some do not consider Social Anxiety to be a true OC Spectrum Disorder, it does have obsessive-compulsive features that are quite similar to OCD. Both conditions are categorized as anxiety disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV) published by the American Psychiatric Association. Also, both involve intense, irrational fears and repeated avoidance of anxiety-provoking situations. Furthermore, recent studies indicate that approximately 11% of those with OCD also have Social Anxiety. Perhaps the most significant similarity linking the two disorders is the cyclical process by which the symptoms of both increase. To learn more about this process
