Social Phobia
(Social Anxiety Disorder)
Social Phobia is characterized by an intense fear of situations, usually social or performance situations, where embarrassment may occur. Individuals with the disorder are acutely aware of the physical signs of their anxiety and fear that others will notice, judge them, and think poorly of them. This fear often results in extreme anxiety in anticipation of an activity, a Panic Attack when faced with an activity, or in the avoidance of an activity altogether. Adults usually recognize that their fears are unfounded or excessive, but suffer them nonetheless. Symptoms of Social Phobia manifest themselves physically and can include:
  • palpitations tremors sweating diarrhea confusion blushing

You Can Overcome Social Anxiety Disorder-Social Phobia!!!
Social Anxiety Disorder also known as Social Phobia can be successfully treated! Welcome, this is a website designed especially for those who suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder and are seeking professional help to overcome and/or learn ways to better manage their disorder.
Often someone with SAD suffers profound loneliness and intense emotional pain in an attempt to avoid rejection and/or the scrutiny of others while at the same time truly yearning for connection, friendship and intimacy. But today there is good reason to have HOPE that you can break the patterns that result in isolation and withdrawal from life.
I am a licensed therapist who understands personally what it is like to have social anxiety. I do not know of or pretend to offer a quick...simple..."CURE" because to date there isn't one. But SAD is clearly treatable, and for most sufferers real improvement is indeed achievable.
The materials I use have been specifically developed for the treatment of SAD. I have current training in and use the latest cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques. I offer both individual and group therapy for social anxiety/phobia. In individual therapy, a general treatment objective/milestone is active participation in a SAD CBT group. My general therapy approach is to provide brief (14-25 sessions), goal-focused, cost-effective treatment that is delivered in a warm, safe and understanding therapeutic environment.

Social anxiety disorder
One of the most common forms of anxiety and the most misunderstood. Social Anxiety can make something as simple as a trip to the store a terrifying experience.
Social anxiety is a very debilitating emotional problem and is the third largest psychological disorder in the Unites States. Social anxiety is brought on by the fear of being judged poorly by other people, which leads to feelings of inadequacy, depression and humiliation when in a public situation. Social anxiety ranges from mild to severe. Mild cases can be managed easily where severe cases can be so debilitating that the person will not leave their house. People have been known to lose or quit their jobs over social anxiety. The stress is just too much to bear and the person just wants to hide from the world. Most people who suffer from social anxiety are fine when they are alone or with people they know and trust, but will feel intense fear and anxiety when with new people or when out in a public place. Something as simple as going to the mall or even the grocery store can become a terrifying experience. Social anxiety disorder (social phobia) is more common than once thought. Millions of people all over the world suffer from social anxiety. bodyOffer(20745) With social anxiety, doing something as simple as meeting a new person can become a terrifying situation. It seems to be worse if the person they are meeting is someone of authority like a politician or someone in upper management. Other things that cause anxiety are being the center of attention, or being watched by people. People with social anxiety will avoid situations that make them feel stress so those who go untreated usually spend a lot of time alone, which can cause a person to feel isolated and depressed.

Modification as social anxiety
Here's a thought: the impulse to pile up fancy words and extra modifiers, and the admonition to write simply and avoid adjectives, are both expressions of the same social anxieties, seen from slightly different places on the social scale. As an illustration, consider the language of menus. At the bottom of the social scale, we have simple places like Wendy's, whose menu includes items like "Single Hamburger on a Bun" and "side salad". When I was a boy in rural Connecticut, we ate out a couple of times a year at the only restaurant in town, the Village Treat, whose menu consisted entirely of simple phrases like "spaghetti and meatballs", "hot dogs and beans", and (my favorite) "grilled cheese sandwich". Things are very different at the , whose lunch menu lists a hamburger as "Big Juicy Burger of Buck Run Farm’s Grass Fed Beef on our House made Poppy Seed Bun", a grilled cheese sandwich as "Butter Toasted Sandwich of Grilled Amish Cheddar, Sweet Red Onions and Tomatoes on Organic Sourdough Bread", and a side salad as "Mixed Salad of Many Lettuces from the Farm with lemon-olive dressing". The menu items are so elaborately expressed that it takes even hyper-literate academics a long time to process the choices, and foreign visitors often require a translation or at least an exegesis. Underneath the elaborate descriptions, the food is excellent. For many years, the White Dog has been one of the best restaurants in Penn's West Philadelphia neighborhood.

Social Phobia
Social phobia, also called social anxiety, is a disorder characterized by overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. People with social phobia have a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and of being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work or school - and other ordinary activities. While many people with social phobia recognize that their fear of being around people may be excessive or unreasonable, they are unable to overcome it. They often worry for days or weeks in advance of a dreaded situation.
Social phobia can be limited to only one type of situation - such as a fear of speaking in formal or informal situations, or eating or drinking in front of others - or, in its most severe form, may be so broad that a person experiences symptoms almost anytime they are around other people. Social phobia can be very debilitating - it may even keep people from going to work or school on some days. Many people with this illness have a hard time making and keeping friends.
Physical symptoms often accompany the intense anxiety of social phobia and include blushing, profuse sweating, trembling, and other symptoms of anxiety, including difficulty talking and nausea or other stomach discomfort. These visible symptoms heighten the fear of disapproval and the symptoms themselves can become an additional focus of fear. Fear of symptoms can create a vicious cycle: as people with social phobia worry about experiencing the symptoms, the greater their chances of developing the symptoms.. Social phobia often runs in families and may be accompanied by depression or alcohol dependence.

What is Social Anxiety Disorder? Social anxiety disorder or social phobia (SD) is fear of social situations. Typically people are afraid they will be embarrassed or humiliated by showing signs of anxiety, saying or doing something which other people will react negatively to, or not knowing what to say or do. Common signs of anxiety are blushing, trembling or shaking, or losing track of conversation (feeling that your mind goes blank). People with social anxiety disorder often worry about social interactions and may go to considerable trouble to avoid them. Situations which are commonly feared include talking in a group, speaking in front of a large or small group, having a conversation (especially with someone who is not well known to them), meeting someone new, speaking to a person in authority, and dating situations. Some people experience difficulty using the telephone, eating or drinking when other people are watching, or participating in activities where there may be an audience such as sports, music, or acting. A person has social anxiety disorder when it interferes with the person's schooling, work, family functioning, or social life or if it causes significant distress. Some people may be described as very shy while others appear to be comfortable in social situations even though they feel very anxious.

Social Anxiety (Phobia)
Social Anxiety is the experience of fear and/or anxiety in social situations in which people fear they may embarrass themselves or make a fool of themselves in some way. Many people can experience some form of anxiety when in a social situation. We all know the nervous anticipation we feel when we have to stand up in front of a group to speak or give a presentation or when walking into a social gathering where we don't know many people. There can be varying degrees of social anxiety. A diagnosis of social anxiety is made if the fear and anxiety is effecting us to a degree that it is debilitating and restricting our life. For instance, if we feel fear and anxiety/panic only when we have to give a presentation in front of a group, (and we are not required to give presentations on a regular basis), then we would have a specific phobia of public speaking If we fear we will embarrass ourselves or make a fool of ourselves, in some or all areas of our life, to the point where we experience intense anxiety and/or panic then a diagnosis of Social Anxiety could be given. Common experiences and fears relating to Social Anxiety are :
  • fear of embarrassing ourselves in some way
  • feelings of self-doubt
  • feeling uncertain and insecure
  • fear of embarrassing ourselves in some way
