23. Facts For Health--social Anxiety Disorder--medication Therapy
Medication treatment can decrease the frequency and intensity of anxiety and avoidance behavior for individuals with social anxiety disorder.
http://socialanxiety.factsforhealth.org/medication.html
What medications are used to treat social anxiety disorder? Medications help reduce the frequency and intensity of anxiety in social situations, and also help decrease anticipatory anxiety and avoidance behaviors. Research results indicate that about 70% of social anxiety disorder patients achieve worthwhile gains from medication therapy. Less than 30% of social anxiety disorder patients receiving a placebo (sugar pill) improve. The amount of improvement with medication varies, but those who improve often find their gains so great that they want to continue the medication. Some actually become symptom-free. Obviously, some patients treated with medication do not benefit, and it is currently impossible to predict who will improve on a particular medication unless they have previously benefited from that medication. There are five major categories of medications used to treat generalized social anxiety disorder and one additional category, beta-blockers, used to treat non-generalized social anxiety disorder (performance anxiety). All of these have been studied systematically and found helpful in controlled research trials.

university of texas at dallas/student counseling center/su1.608/972 883-2575 Overcoming Social Anxiety The college years can be a crucial time for practicing and improving social skills to be used in one’s personal and professional life. Shy students often find this task challenging. While there may be many causes of shyness, a few common themes predominate; low self esteem and an accompanying fear of rejection; excessive concern for others’ approval; and the memory of a past hurtful social experience. When students suffer from these or other causes of shyness, they may be likely to avoid others, be absent from campus extracurricular functions, not speak up in class, be unable to initiate casual conversations or ask someone for a date. They may also have trouble asking for help, standing up for themselves in difficult situations, or give the appearance of being uninterested in others. If I am a shy student what can I do to learn to feel more comfortable in social settings? These tips may help the shy student to feel more confident.
  • Adjust your attitude ; -This can be done on two fronts; changing your unrealistic expectations of your own behavior and changing your distorted perception that others will condemn you if you are not perfect. Practice replacing your self-critical thoughts with more supportive ideas. For example, "Most people can handle it when someone makes a mistake", "It would be nice if this had turned out differently, but it’s not the end of the world", " No one else is perfect. I don’t have to be either."

Overview
What it is : Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is an excessive, persistent fear of social and performance situations so severe it disrupts your daily life and relationships. They might also explore other problems, such as substance abuse or depression, which often accompany social anxiety disorder.( How it's treated : Treatment can involve medications, psychotherapy (talk therapy) or both. It is likely you will need ongoing treatment to prevent your social anxiety disorder from returning.( Paxil is the only medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of social anxiety disorder.

Nothing for Sale! Welcome and Enjoy!

May 2004
Welcome to my website! Shy kid and Social Anxiety Disorder (formerly called Social Phobia) since teens, my Social Anxiety became pretty severe by late high school. At 26 I finally found out the name "Social Phobia" and that it was medically treatable. Substantial improvement in the quality of life is within the reach of most all with untreated Social Anxiety Disorder. Current research is being done to promote earlier diagnosis and treatment (onset in the childhood or teenage years is common).

Comorbidity, Neurobiology, and Pharmacotherapy of Social Anxiety Disorder.
Pollack MH, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston 02114
Symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder:
Social Anxiety Disorder is a persistent fear of one or more situations in which the person is exposed to possible scrutiny by others and fears that he or she may do something or act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing. It exceeds normal "shyness" when it leads to excessive social avoidance and substantial social or occupational impairment. Feared activities may include most any type of social interaction, especially small groups, dating, parties, talking to strangers, restaurants, etc. Physical symptoms include "mind going blank", fast heartbeat, blushing, stomach ache. Cognitive distortions are a hallmark, and learned about in CBT. Thoughts are often self-defeating and inaccurate.

32. Social Anxiety Disorder
Midwest Center Logo. What Causes social anxiety Disorder? social anxiety disorder can be treated, no matter how or why it develops.
http://www.degnanco.com/anxiety/what.html
What Causes Social Anxiety Disorder?
Although no one has discovered a single cause of social anxiety disorder, studies suggest that both biological and psychological factors may play a role. One theory is that social anxiety disorder may be related to an imbalance of a chemical called serotonin (ser-o-to'nin) that transports signals between nerve cells in the brain. Interestingly, this is the same chemical imbalance linked to other mood and anxiety disorders. Another theory is that social anxiety disorder may run in families-especially among close relatives like parents and their children. Or it may stem from an embarrassing social event in the past. It's important to know that the anxiety you may feel in social situations is not necessarily "just the way you are." No matter how long you've lived with it, social anxiety doesn't have to be part of your personality or your life. Social anxiety disorder can be treated, no matter how or why it develops. Several therapies already exist to help people suffering from social anxiety disorder, and researchers are working hard to find even more treatments. "I thought alcohol would help me be more social…and in a way, it did. But it wasn't really me…I wanted to know what was happening to me and what I could do to feel better. I didn't want to hide behind alcohol."

Social phobia ís a fear of negative evaluation. It ís a grossly exaggerated version of the “jitters” many of us get when we perform or think about having to perform under public scrutiny: We worry about not doing well or getting so nervous that people begin to notice. We worry about humiliating or embarrassing ourselves. We worry about other people thinking poorly of us.

F or years, social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, has been underrecognized and undertreated. That situation is beginning to change, however, because recent research has shown that the disorder is highly prevalent, chronic in its untreated course, often associated with comorbid mental and substance-related problems, and capable of disabling those who have it. We now know more about recognizing social phobia and the types of interventions to which it is responsive.
