WHAT IS SOCIAL ANXIETY? Social anxiety is the third largest psychological problem
in the world today... but few people understand this...

A woman hates to stand in line in the grocery store because she's afraid that everyone is watching her. She knows that it's not really true, but she can't shake the feeling. While she is shopping, she is conscious of the fact that people might be staring at her from the big mirrors on the inside front of the ceiling. Now, she has to talk to the person who's checking out her groceries. She tries to smile, but her voice comes out weakly. She's sure she's making a fool of herself. Her self-consciousness and anxiety rise to the roof... Another person sits in front of the telephone and agonizes because she's afraid to pick up the receiver and make a call. She's even afraid to call an unknown person in a business office about the electric bill because she's afraid she'll be "putting someone out" and they will be upset with her. It's very hard for her to take rejection, even over the phone, even from someone she doesn't know. She's especially afraid to call people she does know because she feels that she'll be calling at the wrong time the other person will be busy and they won't want to talk with her. She feels rejected even before she makes the call. Once the call is made and over, she sits, analyzes, and ruminates about what was said, what tone it was said in, and how she was perceived by the other person....her anxiety and racing thoughts concerning the call prove to her that she "goofed" this conversation up, too

Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is an intense fear of social situations. This fear arises when the individual believes that they may be judged, scrutinized or humiliated by others. The anxiety can be specific to one social situation or can be more general in nature.
Common anxiety provoking social situations include:
  • public speaking
  • talking with people in authority
  • dating and developing close relationships
  • making a phone call or answering the phone
  • interviewing
  • attending and participating in class
  • speaking with strangers
  • meeting new people
  • eating, drinking, or writing in public
  • using public bathrooms
  • driving
  • shopping

Physical symptoms that may occur during, or in anticipation of, the situation include:
  • rapid heartbeat
  • sweating
  • muscle tension
  • upset stomach
  • trembling
  • shaky voice
  • dry mouth
  • blushing
  • queasiness
  • ticks
  • hyperventilation
  • difficulty making eye contact
In extreme cases this intense uneasiness can progress into a full blown panic attack. The victim may experience shortness of breath, heart palpitations, numbness in hands and feet, or even a sense of being outside of ones own body.

More rarely it may involve a fear of using a public restroom, eating out, talking on the phone or writing in the presence of other people, such as when signing a check. People with social phobia aren’t necessarily shy at all.
They can be completely at ease with people most of the time,
but in particular situations, they feel intense anxiety.
About 80% of people who suffer from social phobia find relief from their symptoms when treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy The medications that have proven effective include antidepressants called MAO inhibitors. People with a specific form of social phobia called performance phobia have been helped by drugs called beta-blockers. social anxiety disorder (sometimes called social phobia ) can be simply described as an excessive fear of social situations, which can lead to embarrassment.
http://www.social-anxiety.org/whatis.asp
Social anxiety disorder (sometimes called 'social phobia') can be simply described as an excessive fear of social situations, which can lead to embarrassment. It may be a fear of talking to people in authority - perhaps your boss? You might fear that you are being judged negatively by others, and worry that you might act in a way which is embarrassing or humiliating. "My worst fear of all is that I might get embarrassed, and look stupid in front of everyone else..." People with social anxiety disorder find that showing their fear reinforces their negative thoughts. "I am anxious about being anxious..." Doctors, such as ourselves, who are aware of social anxiety disorder are adamant that the condition should not be dismissed as shyness. We recognise that you suffer tremendous anxiety in social situations, especially if you have to make eye contact or talk directly to someone. We know people usually tell you that you are just shy. "Everybody said I had extreme shyness, and they thought I would grow out of it..." You may experience anxiety in almost all situations involving social contact, such as parties, at work, or whilst shopping. Or perhaps your anxiety is confined to one or two specific situations - the most common situations that individuals report feeling anxious in are whilst performing or speaking in public.

19. Highly Sensitive People
Books about highly sensitive people and the spiritual roots of social anxiety.
http://www.iconoclastpress.com/HighlySensitivePeople.html
Highly Sensitive People and Ultra Sensitive People:
the spiritual cause behind the 'problem' of being a highly sensitive person.
A highly sensitive person is simply more 'open' to the psychic and spiritual chaos of life than is the average person who has thicker walls around them. This is not a 'problem', but a gift. However, it must be recognized, accepted, and then assimilated into one's life, in order for such sensitivity to be a benefit rather than a burder. The following excerpt from ROOTS AND WINGS: adventures of a spirit on earth , by Jack Haas , provides a personal account of his own awakening to such openness, and what that really meant.
For more insight into other projects Jack Haas is involved with, including photography and artwork, go to:
www.spiritandflesh.net
"The problem for me is that I have always been far too open, so much so that I suffered from terrible allergies, and neverending sickliness during periods of my childhood, which, I was to find out in later years, are sure signs that you are absorbing other people’s negative energy, and becoming like the liver of the spirit, wherein all toxins are sent to be processed.
I was always too unhealthily open. As a child, at my grandmother’s cottage, I often suffered horrendous allergy attacks, sore throats, or plugged nasal cavities, which could last for weeks, or even the whole summer. Many decades later I read in a metaphysical book that children who are very open often suffer the consequences- in the form of mental or physical suffering- from the pathos or corruptions of another in their midst. And there was one elderly person, living in my presence, who was as corrupt as they come; outwardly giving but inwardly taking, outwardly full of pleasantries but inwardly a murderer, outwardly caring but inwardly conniving and oppressing, and I suffered in the atmosphere of that person’s psychic chaos without a clue that it was not simply a bad case of hay fever, or a cold that would not go away.

Later in life, as a young man, I had a certain type of pain occur on one side of my neck a number of times, which came on all of the sudden, would stay for a few agonizing days, and then slowly fade away. I assumed it was the remnant of an old football injury, returning now and then whenever I slept improperly. This, however, was not the truth, for I did not know at the time that we call someone a “pain in the neck” for very accurate, spiritual reasons, though in modern days we do not recall the lucid understandings which this now colloquial phrase once held in years gone by when the dark arts were more prevalently understood.
...
On one occasion I was in a heated quarrel with a person close to my heart, but who was not exactly inwardly honest about their feelings, and though they were claiming to care deeply for me, at one point they walked behind me and I felt a shooting pain go through my back, as if I had just been stabbed, which I had, psychically. And so I also then understood the term ‘back stabber’ in a way I never had before.
