Snoring
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Snoring is the act of breathing through the open mouth in such a way as to cause a vibration of the uvula and soft palate , thus giving rise to a sound which may vary from a soft noise to a loud unpleasant sound. This most commonly occurs during sleep The cause of snoring is some kind of blockage in the breathing passage. Those blockages can be of many kindshere are just a few:
  • Tongue falling into the throat Allergies Throat weakness causing the throat to close during sleep Mispositioned jaw, often caused by tension in muscles Fat gathering in, and around, the throat
The list of what can cause snoring is almost endless, but it is always some kind of blockage in the breathing passage. When the airflow in the breathing passage becomes irregular (because of the blockage) then the soft palate starts flapping. This flapping of the soft palate makes the irritating snoring sound. Snoring cures almost all revolve around clearing the blockage in the breathing passage. This is the reason snorers are advised to lose weight (to stop fat from pressing on the throat), stop smoking (smoking weakens and clogs the throat), and sleeping on one's side (to prevent the tongue from blocking the throat). But for many snorers those pieces of advice are not enough. Surgery is one option to cure snoring; dental implants are another. There are many devices as nose clips to keep the nose open and jaw mechanics to keep the jaw in the right position. Different aids work for different people.

Peer Review Status: Internally Reviewed I am not obese and I know that I do not have sleep apnea, but I have received several complaints about my excessively loud snoring. What can I do to remedy this problem? Snoring affects a lot of people, so you are not alone, however, it is something that can be a bother, and perhaps a medical issue. Snoring occurs because of upper airway obstruction. The soft tissues in the upper airway vibrate when you breathe in and out. Snoring becomes louder when there is more obstruction. This can become a medical problem if you are not taking in enough oxygen due to the obstruction, or if you are not expelling enough carbon dioxide. If your doctor has already ruled out sleep apnea, then consider talking to him or her about other snoring reduction aids. An example of a snoring aid is breathe right strips to help clear your nasal passages. Things to consider doing to help with snoring include:
  • Don't drink alcohol right before going to sleep. If you do choose to drink, quit at least two hours before you plan on going to sleep. Alcohol can relax the throat muscles, and that flaccid tissue facilitates snoring.

Anyone who suffers from snoring will be well aware of the problems it poses.
Every day, no less than 1 in 3 men and one in ten women experience disturbance and broken sleep.
And the effects are not restricted to snorers themselves, of course the problem extends to everyone else around, notably to partners and other members of the family.
Persistent snoring has been known to reach 90 decibels, as loud as a passing train.
But while others may joke about it, the effects of snoring can be both distressing and serious. Apart from daytime tiredness, which is particularly risky to drivers, pilots and anyone operating machinery, it can also adversely affect the libido.
Worse still, without effective treatment, snoring is well-known to have a seriously damaging effect on marriages and relationships. The tragedy is that this common medical condition, just like a number of others associated with breathing, can easily be treated by a simple laser-assisted technique requiring one 30 minute session under local anaesthetic.

Facts About Sleep Apnea Snoring is a common symptom, occuring in about 3-12% of children. Risk factors for snoring include being overweight, having allergies or other causes of nasal obstruction, having enlarged adenoids and/or tonsils, and exposure to second hand smoke. Treatment for these underlying conditions, when found, should help your child snore less often and sleep better. Since sleep problems can lead to attentional problems and daytime sleepiness, which can affect your child's performance at school, if you suspect your child is having sleep problems, a thorough evaluation would be a good idea.

BECHARA Y. GHORAYEB, MD 8830 LONG POINT, SUITE 806, HOUSTON, TEXAS 77055 TEL: 713 464 2614 Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP ) differs significantly from the traditional uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) in both the surgical technique and the setting where it is performed. The LAUP procedure excises only the uvula and associated soft-palate tissues and does not remove or alter tonsils or lateral pharyngeal-wall tissues. The LAUP procedure is most often performed to alleviate snoring.
Radiofrequency-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (RAUP) is similar to laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP). It is done with a radiofrequency (RF) instrument, instead of a laser.
A topical anesthetic spray and an injection of lidocaine are used to numb the soft palate and uvula.

LASER
This cutting beam coagulates small blood vessels as it cuts, which results in less bleeding. This is a removal procedure, the whole tonsil is taken out. There is some thought it may improve post-operative discomfort and could shorten recovery phase. The procedure does create a burning sensation, which can hurt.
RADIOFREQUENCY
Relies on an electrosurgical instrument that produces pulses of heat.
RADIOFREQUENCY-ASSISTED UVULOPLASTY
The uvula and palate are trimmed with a radiofrequency electrode. The procedure is identical to laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP)
COBLATION the surgeon tries to remove just the center of the tonsil. The attempt with this procedure is to reduce collateral tissue damage. This removes about 90 percent of tonsil. Coblation is also used to reduce the size of the turbinates.
SOMNOPLASTY originally marketed for treatment of snoring. This needle-shaped radio frequency instrument has been used to shrink the tonsil. The tonsil is actually burned to shrink to about 70 percent of the original size. The question remains whether or not a reduced tonsil can still cause infections.
HARMONIC SCALPEL
Cuts tissue with ultrasound vibrations. This method uses low temperatures so it won't burn other tissues.

Is your snoring keeping your family up at night? A new treatment might help everyone sleep in peace and quiet. 7Healthcast reporter Janet Wu has more on this snoring solution. Laurie Roderiques, Snoring Sleeper
"My husband's always made fun of me, and I didn't believe him, I thought he was the one who was snoring." For years, Laurie Roderiques' Merrimack, New Hampshire home, was anything but peaceful at night. Laurie Roderiques
"The kids picked up on itÂ… It would bother them going to sleep, because they could hear me snoring." Laurie has tried a number of procedures to curb her snoring, with mixed results. A new FDA approved treatment has given her hope. Laurie Roderiques
"It sounded like it would be a good way to go." It's called Pillar and a number of health care professionals are praising its simple, minimally invasive process. Dr. Judson Belmont, Manchester, NH
"It's a breakthrough." Here's how it works. Most snoring occurs when the soft palate in the back of the mouth relaxes and vibrates. Pillar stiffens the soft palate with three small polyester pieces. Under local anesthetic, the pieces are inserted into the palate in about 10 minutes to stiffen it.

Getting the most appropriate treatment?
Adrian Zacher A.I.M.P.T. L.O.T.A.
Lots of us snore. An estimated forty-five percent of normal adults ( both sexes ) snore at least occasionally, and 25 percent are habitual snorers. Problem snoring is more frequent in males and overweight persons, and it usually gets worse with age. Snoring problems can have many different causes - and therefore different treatments are appropriate, there can not be a magic 'Cure all' solution. Some people will respond to surgery, others are made worse and the surgery potentially reduces their chances of using other treatments successfully should their disease worsen. The best advice is to consult a sleep medicine physician - he or she will have YOUR best interests at heart and will offer what is appropriate for you and your condition in conjunction with a review of your medical history. Where there are anatomical problems that obstruct or restrict the airway then surgical correction of these may be appropriate. This should be determined by a thorough ENT examination. Originally Published: February 10, 1995 / Updated on: August 04, 1998 Dear Alice, Do you have any hints to stop snoring? Help Dear Help, Snoring is noisy breathing through the open mouth during sleep. It is produced by vibrations of the soft palate. Snoring is usually caused by conditions that interfere with breathing through the nose, such as a common cold, allergies, or enlarged adenoids. It is more common while sleeping on your back, when the lower jaw tends to drop open. As long as your doctor determines that your snoring is not stemming from apnea (a disorder where the snorer stops breathing for seconds, or even minutes) or any other serious condition, here are some tips for alleviating your predicament:
  • Sew an object (i.e., a tennis ball) into the pajama top near the small of your back in order to make it uncomfortable to sleep on your back.
  • For at least two to three hours before bedtime, don't drink alcohol or take sleeping pills, antihistamines, or tranquilizers. They depress the central nervous system and make your tongue floppy and throat muscles loose.

Under the direction of Dr. Alan Oshinsky, treating both simplesnoring and more significant breathing disorders.
http://www.mdmercy.com/sleepcenter/index.asp
Research shows that 45% of normal adults snore at least occasionally, and 25% are habitual snorers. Problem snoring afflicts men and overweight persons more than women, and it usually grows worse with age.
Loud snoring interrupted by frequent episodes of totally obstructed breathing is known as obstructive sleep apnea. Those suffering from this condition may experience 30 to 300 such intervals a night where breathing is stifled for as long as 10 seconds per episode. Fortunately, it is now possible to properly diagnose and treat those problems that lead to snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
The Center for Snoring and Sleep Disorders at Mercy can help with both surgical and non-surgical options. Approaches may include:
  • Weight loss and other lifestyle changes Use of an oral appliance to reposition the jaw during sleep Traditional surgeries to reduce excess tissue Somnoplasty a 30 minute procedure which involves using low-power, low-temperature radio-frequency energy to treat a well-defined area in the uvula or soft palate.
