Speculation over substance
Spring training is more about storylines, not statistics
Posted: Thursday March 27, 2003 12:24 PM
The important thing to remember, everyone says, is that it all means nothing. Not a pitch, not a hit, not a single statistic. Not an overall performance, either, good or bad. Not one headline. Not no headlines. Nothing in spring training means anything. Spring baseball is an exhibition season, let's not forget, as meaningless as a Devil Rays' win in September or an All-Star Game in Milwaukee. The only reason they play the games at all is so the players can work out some kinks after spending all winter golfing. And so the hotels and motels in Florida and Arizona can have a reason to gouge a bunch of poor seamhead snowbirds. There is one more reason they play the games, of course: So we all can speculate. So we all can talk among ourselves. So we all can discuss what's REALLY going on, without worrying about all those burdensome stats.

The disks are protective shock-absorbing pads between the bones of the spine. Although they do not actually "slip," a disk may split or rupture. This can cause the disk to fail, allowing the gel to escape into the surrounding tissue. The leaking jellylike substance can place pressure on the spinal cord or on a single nerve fiber and cause pain either around the damaged disk or anywhere along the area controlled by that nerve. This condition is also known as a herniated, ruptured, prolapsed, or, more commonly, "slipped" disk. The most frequently affected areas are the low back, but any disk can rupture, including in the neck.

Definition: A condition in which part or all of the soft, gelatinous central portion of an intervertebral disk (the nucleus pulposus) is forced through a weakened part of the disk, resulting in back pain and leg pain caused by nerve root irritation. Alternative Names: Lumbar radiculopathy; Cervical radiculopathy; Herniated intervertebral disk; Prolapsed intervertebral disk; Slipped disk; Ruptured disk Causes And Risk: The bones of the spinal column, or vertebrae, run down the back connecting the skull to the pelvis. These bones protect nerves as they exit the brain and travel down the back and then to the entire body. The spinal column is divided into several segments the cervical spine (the neck), the thoracic spine (the part of the back behind the chest), the lumbar spine (lower back), and sacral spine (the part connected to the pelvis that does not move). The spinal vertebrae are separated by cartilage disks filled with a gelatinous substance, that provide cushioning to the spinal column. These disks may herniate (move out of place) or rupture from trauma or

I had back back pains for about a month before I found out I was pregnant. I am now 33 weeks pregnant and my doctor says there is nothing he can do about my back until after birth because he can't do x-rays. But he says he thinks I could have a slipped disk. He bent me like a pretzel trying to figure it out and now doesn't know if it could be a pinched nerve instead. And since this came before I conceived, I don't think the baby is causing it, but it's gotten worse. Sometimes I can just be walking and the way my foot lands on the floor can shoot a pain straight through me. It numbs my leg and has caused me to fall a few times, luckily not hard enough to cause problems. I also can't lay down and turn from one side to another. Has anyone ever had this problem? And could you tell me what you think it may be and anything I can do for it since there's not much the doctors can do for me?

It's usually slipped discs or bulging discs that cause pinched nerves so we're talking pretty much the same thing. A physical therapist I know recommends pregnant patients lie on the floor next to their bed - the head to the butt is flat on the floor, the butt to the knee is vertical next to the bed and the knee to the ankle is resting on the bed - 15 minutes twice a day and gently press the lower back into the floor. some patients say it works. Discuss it with your doctor first. Hope this helps and write back anytime for more information.

    Conservative Management of Disc Problems
There has never been greater public awareness, yet never more confusion about spinal disc problems, which have been categorized as ruptured discs, herniated discs, protruded discs, prolapsed discs, or slipped discs. This article intends to set the facts straight on disc problems.
  • Just what is a "disc" The intervertebral disc comprises a tough, fibrous outer ring, and a soft gelatin-like nucleus or centre, and is situated between the weight bearing bony parts of adjacent spinal segments, called vertebrae. The intervertebral disc has a variety of functions:
    • It acts as a cushion to absorb jars and jolts.
