A herniated disk -which is sometimes called a slipped, ruptured or prolapsed disk -causes severe back problems and pain. You usually get a herniated disk when the soft pads that act as a cushion between the bones of your spine, called disks, are weakened or damaged. This happens because the inner core of the disk, which is sponge-like, starts to bulge or pop out of its outer coating, and then press against the nerves located on the spinal column. This may cause severe discomfort, and lead to long term or chronic back pain. You may also feel tingling and numbness in other areas of your body such as your legs or feet.

GENERAL INFORMATION
DEFINITIONSudden or gradual break in the supportive ligaments surrounding a spinal disk (a cushion separating bony spinal vertebrae).
BODY PARTS INVOLVED
Disks of the neck or lower spine are the most common sites, especially between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae.
IN THE LOWER BACK:
  • Severe pain in the low back or in the back of one leg, buttock or foot (sciatica). Pain usually affects one side and worsens with movement, coughing, sneezing, lifting or straining.
  • Weakness, numbness or muscular wasting of the affected leg. IN THE NECK:
  • Pain in the neck, shoulder or down one arm. Pain worsens with movement.
  • Weakness, numbness or muscular wasting of the affected arm.
    CAUSES
Weakening and rupture of the disk material, creating pressure on nearby spinal nerves. Rupture of the disk is caused by sudden injury or chronic stress, such as from constant lifting or obesity.
    RISK INCREASES WITH
  • Any sport in which movement causes downward or twisting pressure on the neck or spine. The most common include bowling, tennis, jogging, track, football, racquetball, weight-lifting or gymnastics.

The following has been reprinted from a NorthEast Medical Rounds
The bad news: back pain is very common-80% of us will experience an episode of low back pain requiring medical treatment in our lifetime. The good news: for most of us back pain will be no more than an occasional nuisance, and most episodes of low back pain do not require treatment beyond a few weeks and do not require surgery. As a physician specializing in treating work-related injuries, I see patients with back injuries every day. Back injuries can result from unusual activity, both at work and at home, but even severe back injuries can also occur from some very common activities - simple lifting of light objects, turning or twisting, even coughing or sneezing! Many back injuries could be prevented-and we will discuss how later-but many would probably happen no matter what we do to try to prevent them. Many people also have back pain simply as a result of getting older, not as a consequence of a specific injury. Initial evaluation of the person with low back pain usually only involves physician examination. X-rays of the spine are, unfortunately, not often helpful in determining the cause of low back pain. Unless there has been trauma-from a fall, a motor vehicle accident, or the like-the likelihood of bone injury is small. X-rays only allow us to see bone injuries and do not help us diagnose muscle or ligament strains or slipped disc injuries.

    Herniated Disk
(Ruptured Disk, Prolapsed Disk, Slipped Disk)
    by Amy Scholten, MPH
    Definition
A herniated disk (or disc) happens when one of the disks in the spine bulges from its proper place. Disks are small circular cushions between the vertebrae (bones) in the spine. The disks are compressible and act as cushions for the bones of the spine. Herniated disks press on the nerves where they exit from the spinal column in close proximity to the disk and can cause severe pain. This is most common in the lower spine.
    Causes
Herniated disks can occur when disks dry out, become flatter and provide less cushioning. If they become too weak, the outer part may tear. The inside part may then push through the tear and press on the nerves next to it.
    Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition.

"It contains 15 tracks in the genre now known as glitch or clicks 'n cuts. But there is something strange about this record: tracks are quite varied and only slightly rythmical. It is certainly not the type of music that will fill the old dancefloor. And that makes it all the more interesting of course. The general tendency on this disc is minimalistic, but with a certain humoristic twist. Rythms are constructed from looped cuts and other sounds are layered on top of that. Things are sometimes on the edge of going berserk, but never really do. Noise is always lurking somewhere around the corner, waiting for the right moment to erupt." * MR (Vital Weekly)

    General Illness Information
    Medical Term:

Disk, Ruptured Common Name: Herniated disk, Slipped Disk Description: A herniated disk is a spinal disk which has collapsed and is bulging into the spinal cord, pressing on the spinal cord or the nerves emanating from it. This occurs as a result of degeneration of the ligaments and tissues surrounding a spinal disk (i.e.. the cushion separating bony spinal vertebrae). The disks of the lower back (lumbar) or neck (cervical) are the most common sites. 80% of cases of lumbar disk protrusion occur at the L5-S1 level. In the neck the commonest site affected is at the C6-C7 level. When it affects the cervical spine, it is called cervical spondylosis. This condition usually affects middle-aged and older adults. Causes: Degeneration of ligaments with or without back injury (acute or chronic) leads to slipped disk. Prevention: Prevent back injury by p racticing proper posture when lifting. Also, exercise regularly to maintain good muscle tone.
