LOW BACK SLIPPED DISK (Herniated Lumbar Disk) For more Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Information Check out EMEDx.com Definition Abnormal movement of the material (disk) that helps support the bones of the lower back. Details Disks are found between the bones of the back (vertebrae). They can at times push out of their normal position (herniate) and then cause symptoms. Causes A slipped disk or herniation usually results from an twisting injury to the low back or may be due to several small sprains. Diagnosis Typically, pain and spasm begin either immediately after an injury or develop within the 24 hours. The pain is made worse by activity and usually improves with rest. The pain may start in the lower back but also can radiate to the legs. This can be felt as a sharp or shooting pain down the leg into the knee, ankle or foot. It may be accompanied by either numbness or weakness. Initially x-rays may be taken to evalute the back. An MRI Scan or CT scan may also be ordered depending on the symptoms and physical examination.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
A slipped diskalso known as a herniated or prolapsed diskoccurs when the ligaments that support and surround the flat, platelike cushions between the vertebrae in the spine begin to weaken. A back strain may cause one of these ligaments to break, allowing the disk material to squeeze out from between the vertebra and press on nearby nerves. Slipped disks become increasingly common with age.
Causes
The ligaments may give way under the stress of regular lifting, or tear open during a sudden injury. The odds of this happening increase when you are overweight.
Signs/Symptoms
A slipped disk in the lower back can put pressure on the sciatic (sigh-AT-ik) nerve, causing sciaticasharp, shooting pain from the buttock down the back of the leg to the foot. You may notice weakness, numbness, or loss of muscle strength in the affected leg. If a disk slips in the neck, the pain will get worse when you move your neck. It may also extend across the shoulder or down one arm. Your arm may feel weak or numb, or may lose muscle strength.

Herniated Disk Repair
When the soft, gelatinous central portion of an intervertebral disk is forced through a weakened part of a disk, it is a condition known as a slipped disk. Most herniation takes place in the lumbar area of the spine, and it is one of the most common causes of lower back pain. The mainstay of treatment for herniated disks is an initial period of rest with pain and anti-inflammatory medications followed by physical therapy. If pain and symptoms persist, surgery to remove the herniated portion of the intervertebral disk is recommended. Previous Image Next Image Jump to another image

    Email Address: shahpa@kben.co.uk
Dear Sir, My Partner recently had surgery to remove two slipped disks. At first he seemed to recover quickly, whilst their was some bruising he was already walking and perching at the end of the bed. He was therefore discharged from the hospital after about 4 or 5 days. The day after he started to complain of pain on the right hand lower back and after 2 or 3 days was readmitted to the hospital. He is now suffering from chronic spasms in the lower back region and is almost bed ridden as the pain is so intense. He has had a weekening in his legs and occasionally his arms spasm as well, although this is not as severe. He is currentl on Pathedone (spelling?) and has had electopathy for the inflamation, but rather than his condition improving it has steadily deterioated. I was surfing the net and have come accross articles on Myelitis - could this have anything to do with his current condition? Can you please advise me. Next Article

You are in: Back, Ribs, Neck, and Head Slipped Disk Overview The disks are protective shock-absorbing pads between the bones of the spine. Although they do not actually "slip," a disk may split or rupture. This can cause the disk to fail, allowing the gel to escape into the surrounding tissue. The leaking jellylike substance can place pressure on the spinal cord or on a single nerve fiber and cause pain either around the damaged disk or anywhere along the area controlled by that nerve. This condition is also known as a herniated, ruptured, prolapsed, or, more commonly, slipped disk. The most frequently affected area is the low back, but any disk can rupture, including those in the neck.

You are in: Back, Ribs, Neck, and Head Slipped Disk Symptoms The nerves of the body exit the spine at each spinal level. A herniated disk can therefore produce symptoms anywhere along the course of that nerve, though the injury and irritation of the nerve are at the spine itself (this is known as referred pain). A slipped disk can produce varying degrees of pain in the back or neck along with numbness or weakness.
