Skin Center Alpha Nutrition Hives or urticaria are common allergic reactions. They are itchy, elevated, red blotches of varying size that appear suddenly and disappear mysteriously after hours to days. Hives may be associated with dramatic swelling reactions; swelling of the lips, eyes, and ears can suddenly and grotesquely alter the appearance of an allergy victim. Marked swelling especially of facial tissues is referred to as angioedema and is often associated with urticaria. Swelling of the lips and tongue may occur immediately after eating a food and may be life-threatening because of airway obstruction. Foods and drugs are the common causes of hives. Some patients get hives occasionally only when they ingest a specific food or food additives. Other get hives as a chronic problem which can go-on for years. Most studies of chronic hives suggest a low % of food allergy causes usually because diet revision attempts were inadequate to reveal the hidden food causes. Acute Urticaria is Immediate Hypersensitivity The type I version of urticaria tends to occur in acute discrete attacks and may follow the ingestion of specific foods, over-the counter medications, or prescription drugs. Atopic children with eczema and rhinitis are prone to urticaria from food. Hives are associated with high IgE and occur usually as acute food reactions. Hives also occur as a feature of anaphylactic reactions. The itchy, erythematous welts, typical of acute urticaria can occur in any distribution in the body. Infants may develop facial wheals on contact with food. Adults often have a single bout of hives when they encounter an unusual or seasonal food or take a drug. Hives following a strawberry feed in the summer or after a eating prawns at a sea-food restaurant are typical examples.

"Guitar nipple" is a form of mastitis from cradling guitars, the study said Musicians risk such afflictions as "guitar nipple" or "fiddler's neck" playing their instruments, a new dermatology study has reported.
The report said guitarists could suffer a form of mastitis, a breast inflammation, while holding the instrument against their chests. Violin players also suffered a form of skin complaint in their necks according to the study by a London doctor. The report also suggested musicians got allergies from playing instruments. The report by Dr Thilo Gambichler, of Oldchurch Hospital in east London, was published in the journal BMC Dermatology. Dr Gambichler said he had found allergies to rosin, used to wax bows in string instruments and in reeds of clarinets and saxophones. 'Significant problem' Other players using flutes and brass instruments were found to suffer allergies to nickel, which could cause dermatitis of the lips, it said. "More or less severe skin injuries may occur in musical instrumentalists, in particular acute and chronic wounds including their complications," the report said.

    What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by inflammation of the skin, itching, and thick, red areas of skin covered by silvery scales or flakes. Skin problems caused by psoriasis range from cases so mild the psoriasis goes unnoticed, to so severe that large areas of the body are covered.
Skin problems associated with psoriasis commonly affect the scalp, joints and lower back of the psoriasis sufferer, although inflammation can occur anywhere on the body. One of the more common types of skin disorders, psoriasis affects between five to seven million people in the United States, and over 150,000 new cases are reported yearly.
    Is Psoriasis Contagious?
While psoriasis causes unsightly and emotionally distressing skin problems, it is not one of the contagious skin disorders. Patients are often embarrassed by the condition, and it can affect their social activity levels. Some people may have a negative reaction to psoriasis sufferers, and may avoid touching or interacting with them. This often leads to feelings of anger, frustration and depression. Self-esteem and self-worth can be damaged by social stigmas.

The skin is one of the most vulnerable organs of the body. Though seldom life threatening, skin disorders can be uncomfortable and may cause chronic disabilities. In addition, because the skin is so visible, skin disorders can lead to psychological stress. There are many disorders of the skin that require clinical care by a physician or other healthcare professional. Listed in the navigation in the blue box on the left side of this page are some of the conditions, for which we have provided a brief overview. If you cannot find the condition in which you are interested, please visit the Online Resources page in this web site for an Internet/World Wide Web address that may contain additional information on that topic.

    Dispelling myths about acne
Ken Landow, MD VOL 102 / NO 2 / AUGUST 1997 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE This page is best viewed with a browser that supports tables This is the first of four articles on skin disorders Preview Virtually no one escapes adolescence and early adulthood unscathed by acne. However, advanced methods of therapy are now available to deal with all but the most recalcitrant forms of the condition. Unfortunately, stereotypical notions about causes and treatments still persist, and as Dr Landow points out, patient education to dispell these myths is an important part of management. A cne remains an enigma. Despite years of scientific research, we still lack answers to some of the most fundamental questions about this widespread problem of adolescence and early adulthood. Our current understanding of acne does exonerate most dietary, grooming, and personal idiosyncrasies as etiologic factors. However, the precise role of bacterial colonization, sebum production, immune factors, genetics, and hormonal fluctuations has not yet been clarified. Despite the unanswered questions, we have today effective, albeit slow, means of alleviating all but the most stubborn cases of acne. Unfortunately, the costs may be staggering and may be a limiting factor for some patients.

What every primary care physician should know Ashfaq A. Marghoob, MD VOL 102 / NO 2 / AUGUST 1997 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE This page is best viewed with a browser that supports tables This is the fourth of four articles on skin disorders Preview Skin cancer is a major threat to sun-loving Americans, afflicting about 20% of the general population at some point in life. The good news is detection is relatively simple, and screening can easily be incorporated into every physical examination. If basal or squamous cell cancers are found early, treatment is simple and usually successful. However, lifelong surveillance is extremely important in patients who have had skin cancer. Dr Marghoob discusses the characteristics of basal and squamous cell carcinomas and outlines diagnostic and therapeutic options. S kin cancer is the most common malignancy in the United States, affecting one in every five persons at some time during their life (1,2). Of the estimated 1 million new cases diagnosed in 1996 in this country, more than 600,000 were basal cell carcinomas and about 200,000 were squamous cell carcinomas (1). Both of these cancers are malignant neoplasms derived from keratinocytes. Basal cell carcinoma rarely metastasizes but may cause extensive local tissue damage (3). In contrast, squamous cell carcinoma metastasizes in 2% to 3% of patients (3). According to unpublished data gathered by the Skin Cancer Foundation and information from the National Cancer Institute (1), 2,100 deaths in the United States were attributed to squamous cell carcinomas in 1996. However, if these cancers are detected and treated early, the prognosis is excellent, with cure rates above 95% (3).

The interpretation of skin disorders remains both a science and an art. It is also a practice that is not exclusive to Dermatologists. All clinicians, regardless their level of training, are challenged to identify a variety of skin disorders on a regular basis. Dermatology is a discipline that can claim both high patient and clinician satisfaction when a skin disorder is properly diagnosed and treated. The following "Skin Disorders" section will hopefully help familiarize you with this task. Our web pages cover some of the more common dermatologic conditions that may be encountered. For each skin disorder, the following are covered: definition, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, management, as well as visual aids. Website creator: John T. INHERITED SKIN DISORDERS Almost all skin disorders, except for those that are infectious, are more common in certain breeds than others. Common sense suggests that these disorders are inherited but in general, scientific studies have not been done to establish the mode of inheritance or the frequency in the breed. Some conditions have become so common in certain breeds as to be accepted as normal for the breed (eg. acanthosis nigricans in the dachshund). Listed below are the most important skin conditions that are believed to have an inherited component. Acanthosis nigricans Acral lick dermatitis/granuloma Acral mutilation syndrome Atopy / allergic inhalant dermatitis ... Zinc-responsive dermatosis
