    Extraintestinal Complications: Skin Disorders
After arthritis, the next most common extraintestinal complication of IBD are skin disorders, which affect about five percent of people with IBD.
    • Erythema nodosum literally means "red bumps." These tender red nodules, which usually appear over the shins or ankles and sometimes on the arms, occur most in people with ulcerative colitis (2-4 percent), although they may also affect those with Crohn's disease of the colon (1-2 percent). Women are more commonly affected than men. Erythema nodosum generally appears in conjunction with a flare-up of IBD, but it may also occur just before a flare-up. It tends to improve when the bowel disease is brought under control.
      Pyoderma gangrenosum
Aphthous stomatitis are small ulcers in the mouth, also known as canker sores. These shallow ulcerations are most commonly located between the gums and lower lip or along the sides or base of the tongue. They are usually seen during severe flare-ups of IBD and generally subside as the bowel disease comes under control. Medicinal mouthwashes may be helpful as treatment, but because aphthous ulcerations may also be caused by nutritional deficiencies, these problems need to be addressed as well.
      Acrodermatitis enteropathica.

The common lay term "rash" is loosely used to signify any number of skin disorders characterized by itchy, red, irritated skin eruptions, including dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and urticaria (hives). Other common skin problems include acne, keratosis (hardening of the skin), canker sores, premature aging, and dryness. The largest organ in the human body, skin serves as the crucial mediator between the inner body and the external environment and reflects the status of the body's internal health. Although surface irritants can be the source of skin problems, many skin conditions are actually systemic in origin, and thus may be effectively treated by correcting physiological imbalances within the body.

In fact, some experts estimate that 15% of patients with Candida overgrowth have some type of skin lesions. Numerous clinical studies have linked the presence of anti-Candida albicans antibodies in the blood with the clinical condition of atopic dermatitis.

    Identifying Skin Disorders in Cats
INFORMATION TO HELP PROTECT YOUR PET
This article prepared especially for NZYMES.COM
The following sections serve as an introduction to skin disorders in cats, and suggest where to look to find the cause of a problem.
When your cats begin to scratch continuously, lick and bite at their skin and rub against objects to relieve discomfort, they have an itchy skin disorder, and you must attempt to determine the cause. See ITCHY SKIN DISORDERS There is another group of skin conditions that affect the appearance of the coat and hair. These diseases do not cause your cat much discomfort-at least not at first, Hair Loss is the main sign. It may appear as impaired growth of new hair, or you may notice a patchy loss of hair from specific areas of the body. At times, the coat does not look or feel right and may be greasy or coarse and brittle. To determine the possible cause, see HAIR LOSS DISORDERS When your cat has a painful skin condition and you see pus and other signs of infection on or beneath the skin, this is pyoderma. Some cases are caused by self-mutilation and are late consequences of scratching and biting. Other pyodermas are specific skin diseases that occur by themselves. See

    Skin disorders
Different types of common skin disorders and some of their treatments
Skin disorders or problems can result from body processes, injuries, environmental conditions, or germs. There are some problems that can be avoided and some that a simple first aid treatment will end. bodyOffer(32822) Warts are usually caused by viruses and are seen more on the hands than other areas of the body. Treatment is not always necessary as some warts will vanish on their own. Warts on the face, soles of the feet, or in the genital area should be examined and treated by a doctor. Warts very rarely will become malignant. If you want them removed, it is best to consult a doctor. People with very light complexions usually develop freckles, which are found on different parts of the body but are more commonly found on the back of the hands and on the face. Freckles appear after the fifth year of life and reach their maximum size by adolescence. These can be camouflaged with cosmetics, and some fade as you age. Attempts to remove freckles can cause serious scarring so there is really no known remedy for removing them. Hives are bumps on the surface of the skin, usually caused by an allergic reaction to food or medicine and also caused by emotional stress. Hives are little pinkish or white elevations (wheals) on the skin surface. Sometimes they are found in the mouth, but they may also cover the entire body. The bumps may be small or large. These itch badly and also burn. The burning sensation and itching can be very distressing, especially to children. Hives appear quite suddenly and disappear almost as fast when the cause is removed. The cause of hives most of the time is due to certain foods. The skin may be bathed with a solution of bicarbonate of soda or rubbed with mineral or olive oil or other soothing applications. If you have hives, it is a good idea to consult your doctor as he/she can prescribe medicines to relieve the intense itching.
