I n a scientific study of SIDS, episodes of apnea (cessation of breathing) and hypopnea (abnormally shallow breathing) were measured before and after DPT vaccinations. "Cotwatch" (a precise breathing monitor) was used, and the computer printouts it generated (in integrals of the weighted apnea-hypopnea density WAHD) were analyzed. The data clearly shows that vaccination caused an extraordinary increase in episodes where breathing either nearly ceased or stopped completely. These episodes continued for months following vaccinations. About Us "...commited to caring..." In 1975 the SIDS sudden unexpected death of an infant or child has additional pieces that are not always understood by those either inexperienced or uninformed. Center staff is expert in this specialized area of counseling. Due to our relationship with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner we are able to provide accurate and timely information with continuous support throughout the autopsy process. Strategies for coping with the loss for parents, siblings, grandparents, and other significant persons are tailored to meet the needs of each family or individual. Appropriate literature is given to families, and they are linked to community resources such as support groups and community health nurse home visiting services. Families are sent newsletters and announcements of events for as long as desired in an effort to keep them connected to the Center and other families. All services are provided at no cost. Even though families may use individual counseling or groups for ongoing support, many stay connected to the Center through parent-initiated events, some of which are fundraising efforts.

The Guild for Infant Survival, Orange County (GISOC), a SIDS Alliance Affiliate, is dedicated to serving families, educating the public and professionals, and eliminating Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) through the support of medical research. GISOC was established in 1975 to support families who have lost a baby to SIDS. The non-profit GISOC is the only Orange County peer support group for SIDS families. GISOC becomes involved immediately when a SIDS death occurs in Orange County. A public health nurse notifies the organization, which in turn responds to the affected family within 24 hours. GISOC provides a packet of information about SIDS and assigns a one-on-one volunteer peer contact who is available 24 hours a day to answer questions and provide a sympathetic, understanding ear.
