Sadly, each year in the UK, around 350 babies die suddenly and unexpectedly. Most of them are under six months old. In 1991, the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths launched a campaign to reduce the risks of cot death. Since then the number of babies dying of cot death has more than halved. Nevertheless, cot death remains the leading kind of death in UK babies over one month old. What causes cot death?
A defect in the brain stem

One medical researcher has identified an abnormality in the region of the brain stem which controls carbon dioxide sensing in some babies who have died of SIDS. Sleeping face down can trap carbon dioxide between the baby's face and the mattress, so the baby breathes in excess amounts of this deadly gas. Most babies will wake up when the levels of carbon dioxide get too high. But the brain-stem abnormality may prevent some babies from knowing when the gas has accumulated to a life-threatening level.

Forged through the merger of national and regional SIDS groups formed over four decades ago, the SIDS Alliance was created in 1987 as an umbrella organization for the many diverse entities involved in SIDS. Through our research and education programs, the SIDS Alliance has helped reduce the rate of SIDS by 42% since 1992. Despite this enormous progress, SIDS remains the #1 cause of death for infants from one month to one year of age.

PJ
July 23, 1995 - Oct. 3, 1995
We were blessed on Sunday, July the 23rd at 8:14 P.M. With the arrival of our third child, weighing in at 8lbs, 3oz. and 20 inches long. He came into this world three weeks ahead of schedule. He was given a clean bill of health, a fine healthy baby boy. The apple of his parents eyes.
Yes we thought we were a complete family. With two healthy girls and now a little boy. Our dreams were all finally coming true,
so we thought. We named this little
boy after his daddy, James Alan and his grandpa Pete. Our little boy was given the name of Peter James-Alan Buth. With the nickname of PJ.
We all adjusted to the routine of having a new baby in the house. It wasn't easy to do with a very active two year old running around, but somehow we managed. Before we knew it our little boy was 6 weeks old, and it was getting time for mommy to return to work. Sunday the 3rd of September we held PJ's dedication. My last weekend with my son before I had to return back to work. I loved the time off, but I knew there was no way we could pay our bills unless I returned to work. One of the good things about returning to work, was that my husband and I work different shifts so we shared the child care needs. We didn't have to worry about child care expenses. Everything seemed to be adjusting to fit with everyone's schedule. I went to work during the day and came home to my children at night.

SMOKING PARENTS ARE KILLING THEIR INFANTS [07/30]
A new study shows that smoking by parents is a major cause of death among infants from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and at least one researcher has suggested that persons seeking to adopt infants be questioned about their smoking habits. Below are excerpts from two recent articles. Readers who know smokers with infants, or who are considering adoption, might wish to make copies of this information for them. British researchers Thursday blamed parents who smoke for more than half of crib deaths and said babies should not be exposed to tobacco smoke at all. More than 60 percent of all crib deaths, also known as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), could be prevented if people stopped smoking around their babies and pregnant women, the report in the British Medical Journal said. ''The recent research makes it clear that fathers who smoke are also a problem,'' Joyce Epstein of the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths told a news conference. ''If we could remove all smoking from a baby's environment, we estimate that cot deaths would fall by 61 percent,'' she said, adding the findings were in line with studies underway in the United States, New Zealand and Scandinavia.

(a subsidiary of BTG plc, (LSE: BGC), a leading international technology transfer company) announced today that it is offering licenses to a sensor technology that can be used to accurately and non-intrusively monitor for conditions of sleep apnea, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), or other respiratory disorders in infants, children and adults. This fiber-optic-based sensor technology addresses the growing need for non-invasive, reliable and low-cost monitoring systems for such sleep disorders. Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious disorder caused by obstruction of the upper airway during sleep which affects around 18 million Americans. According to the National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research the vast majority of patients with sleep disorders currently remain undiagnosed. Moreover, in the US, SIDS remains the leading cause of death in infants during the first year of life - claiming the lives of over 6,000 babies each year.

Thank you for visiting the Sleeping Angels Fund. We are a program helping to provide familes touched by infant death with grave markers/monuments. Many families do not have adequate life insurance to cover such cost and need help in their time of grief. Grave markers can range from $350 to $3,000 depending on size, shape, color, and inscription. The Sleeping Angels Fund believes that every child deserves and needs to be remembered so we will do what we can to help memorialize these precious Angels. If you would like to help us help these families please make a donation. All donations are tax dedutable and will help us with our cause. We also hold fundraisers throughtout the year and if a monetary donation is not possible any kind of gift for us to raffle during a fundraiser would be greatly appreciated as well. http://www.caringforkids.cps.ca/babies/BackToSleep.htm
Back to Sleep: Reducing the risk of SIDS Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), also known as Crib Death, refers to the sudden and unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant under one year of age. Each week, 3 babies die of SIDS in Canada. Such deaths usually occur while the child is sleeping and remain unexplained even after a full investigation. Nobody knows how to prevent SIDS, but the latest research shows that there are things you can do to make your baby safer. Sleeping Position
A Smoke- and Drug-Free Environment

Dressing Baby For Sleep

Breastfeeding
Sleeping Position SIDS is less common in babies who sleep on their back. Put your baby to sleep on his or her back on a firm flat surface. You do not need anything special to do this. Babies who sleep on their back are not more likely to choke. Some babies have a medical problem that means they must sleep on their tummy. Ask your doctor which position is best for your child. When the baby is awake and being watched, some "tummy time" is necessary for the baby’s development. This will also avoid temporary flat spots which sometimes develop on the back of their head from lying on their back. Older babies may be able to turn on their own from their back to their tummy. It is not necessary to force babies to sleep on their back when they are able to turn from their back to their tummy on their own.

"Back to Sleep" campaign hot line: 800/505-CRIB. Did you know? Many experts now recommend against bedsharing with infants (see KidsHealth for information on this), and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission now recommends against placing babies in adult beds CDC Report on Breastfeeding, Smoking New AAP Recommendations Back Sleeping Flattened Skull ... Links
CDC Says Breastfeeding and Not Smoking Could Cut SIDS Cases: In April 2001, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was reported saying that a study of 117 SIDS cases suggests that 55 percent of those cases might have been prevented if the mothers had breastfed, and another 27 percent might have been prevented if mothers had not smoked after delivery (exposing their newborns to secondhand smoke). AAP Recommends Additional Procedures in Determining Cause of Sudden Infant Death: In February, 2001, The American Academy of Pediatrics issued several new recommendations for cases of suspected Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, including a "prompt death scene investigation," postmortem examination, and collection of medical and familial history. Go to Top Back sleeping: Doctors recommend that parents put healthy infants to sleep on their backs - not on their stomachs - to help prevent the tragedy of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The reasons are twofold. Very young babies don't have the physical capability to lift their heads or roll away from a danger. Experts also say that babies take about a year to fully develop the automatic defensive reactions to an inability to breathe (such as instinctively moving their heads or removing the item blocking their faces). So if a baby sleeps on his stomach, the risk is greater that his mouth and nose will become buried
