The Iowa SIDS Alliance is an affiliate of the National SIDS Alliance About SIDS SIDS is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. SIDS is the same thing as Crib Death. It means that a healthy baby dies quickly, without warning. Doctors cannot find a reason why the baby died. SIDS can happen to any family no matter what race they are, how much money they make, or where they live. SIDS is the major cause of death to babies from one month to one year of age. Nearly 2,583 infants die of SIDS each year in the U.S. alone. That is 7 each day! Most SIDS deaths occur when a baby is between 2 and 4 months old. SIDS occurs more often in the winter and early spring months.

Kalen Wayne Innes October 25th, 2001 to Febuary 20th, 2002 This is the first picture of me and Kalen. It was take just minutes after he was born This site is dedicated to my nephew Kalen. It has now been over two years since we lost Kalen to S.I.D.S (Sudden Infant Dealth Syndrome) And it has been the hardest years of my life. I can't begin to explain all the up's, the down's and the tears I've cried. I know, life will never be the same. I watched Kalen come into this world and I had to watch him go. He was my birthday gift, born just days before my birthday, couldn't have asked for anything more than a new little nephew. As adults, we are suposed to go before the children, not the other way around. Kalen was so precious, everytime I saw him I had to smile. He was just so adorable, so perfect. On Febuary 20th, 2002, Kalen gained his angel status and the pain began. Even though we know he is in a great place, we want him back in our arms.
I want to use this site for others to know the angel we held in our arms for such a short time and for everyone to know he WAS here and to never ever forget. Even though he was only in our lives for a short time, he made such an impact. I love you Kalen, now and for always. Links: Sidsfamilies website SIDS Org.

Just the words 'Sudden Infant Death Syndrome' evoke fear. Fortunately more and more is being learned about prevention of this terrible tragedy.
SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is, as the name implies, the sudden and unexpected death of an infant for no known cause. It's the largest killer of babies in the first year of life. Although the exact cause of SIDS is still unknown, research is pointing more and more to certain factors which can put our babies at risk. Research now shows a correlation between SIDS and babies who are laid down to sleep on their stomachs. Although this research doesn't state that the prone position causes SIDS, it appears to be a major factor in SIDS related deaths.
Because of this pediatrician Dr. John Kattwinkel recommends that "if there is no other reason to do otherwise, if the baby is healthy, born at term and not a baby who spits up a great deal or has abnormalities of the airway, then perhaps the parents ought to place their babies down to sleep on their side or on their back rather than on their stomach. "
Dr. Kattwinkel also stresses that parents should avoid laying their babies on soft pillows, lambskins and water beds. And he adds that although SIDS is often unavoidable there are things that parents can do to decrease the risks. "We used to think that SIDS was a sporadic problem which couldn't be avoided and could hit anyone, explains Kattwinkel. "That's still true to an extent, but there are ways to decrease the risk. Babies of mothers who don't smoke, don't use drugs, and who do breast feed and place their babies on back or sides are at a low risk of having SIDS."

4 WAYS ATTACHMENT PARENTING CAN REDUCE THE RISK OF SIDS
The most plausible explanation for SIDS, in most babies, is a defect in cardiorespiratory control and arousability during sleep. Also, research suggests that some infants at risk for SIDS have less-organized physiological control mechanisms. So, any parenting style that can enhance the development of a baby's physiological control systems and increase mother's awareness to subtle changes in her baby's physiology, would lower the risk of SIDS. Attachment parenting does this. 1. Attachment parenting organizes an infant's physiological control systems. New thinking is that some SIDS babies may not have been as physiologically normal as they appeared to be before they died. Findings of higher heartrates and less adaptable heartrate variability in babies at risk for SIDS suggests these infants are less able to adjust their physiology to changing biological conditions. Also, several studies of high risk infants and babies who died of SIDS suggests that some of these babies had temperaments and behavioral qualities that lessened their ability to protest life-threatening circumstances. Summing up this complicated and shaky research that attempts to correlate infant temperament and SIDS, it seems that in some infants the drive to survive is weak. Some infants are physiologically disadvantaged to protect themselves from SIDS. A baby who spends a lot of time in mother's arms, at mother's breasts, and in mother's bed becomes more physiologically organized. Therefore, I believe a baby whose overall physiology is more organized has a lower risk of succumbing to SIDS. Pure speculation, researchers would claim! Read on. Over a period of fifteen years I gathered hundreds of articles on attachment research studies that conclude: the closer the infant and mother are, the better the baby's physiology works, especially during the early months when infants are at highest risk of SIDS. What a pity that most of this useful research lies buried in obscure journals or shared at scientific meetings, but little is translated into practical information to help new parents develop a style of infant care that could reduce the risk of SIDS.

SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - is a tragic way for infants to die. The medical establishment seems to have no idea what causes it. Apparently healthy infants just suddenly die in their sleep, with no apparent warning. Two out of every thousand live-born infants die of this syndrome. Cause Unknown or Cause Ignored? But is the cause really unknown, or has it been ignored and marginalized? In the 1970s, an Australian doctor named Archie Kalokerinos volunteered to serve the Aboriginal people in the opal mining region of Australia. He found that an astonishing 50% of infants were dying, primarily from SIDS. He noted that the people and their infants were almost completely deficient of vitamin C in their diet, and began a supplementation program. Before long the infant mortality rate had dropped to near zero, and no child subsequently died of SIDS. In 1978, Dr. Irwin Stone, one of the doctors who pioneered research in vitamin C, reported this in a paper presented at the Conference On Controversies In Human And Clinical Nutrition that SIDS was in fact a result of what he called Chronic Subclinical Scurvy (vitamin C deficiency):

Sometimes angels leave this world early so that we can feel what they mean to us and think about what they stand for and stood for in life.
This page is dedicated to the memory of our son, Joshua Reed who left us too soon on March 7th, 1994. He is sadly missed and never forgotten. During Joshua's short time on earth, he touched many hearts and continues to do so as his memory lives on in the hearts and minds of so many people who love him. We will rock him in the cradle of our hearts forever. The best and most beautiful things in the world
cannot be seen or even touched.
They must be felt with the heart.

Rainbows, Stars, and Butterflies
Anonymous
Perhaps it was the sunshine or it may have been the rain, that let me find a place I'd lost when hate I had gained. I searched among forgotten dreams then paused with a sigh, for on a nearby cloud I found "Rainbows happen when angels cry". Questions I began to find, and answers for each one. What is the source of butterflies, the rising of the sun? "The sun comes up when angels laugh" was written on the moon, and "Butterflies are angel smiles" was on a flower's bloom. Snowflakes I found with a teddy bear, a friend of many years. Snowflakes", he said with shining eyes, "are happy angel tears". "Break an angel's heart, a star goes out" hung from a cruel thorn. By first love's light, in letters bright "when it mends, a star is born". As I left that place a kindly voice whispered from above, "There is a thing you can do which exceeds these wonders grand." Then two words sweet, in letters neat appeared in the sand........ "People Love".

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Vaccination
At a glance: T he age at which infants begin their primary course of vaccinations (2 to 4 months old) is also the peak age for the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The similar timing of these two events has led some people to believe that the events might be related. However, recent studies have concluded that vaccinations are not a risk factor for SIDS or sudden unexpected death in infants The incidence of SIDS is declining in the United States due to public education campaigns regarding infant sleeping position, reduced exposure of infants to cigarette smoke and fewer potentially hazardous sleeping environments. Recent reports and studies, combined with the decrease in SIDS rate despite the increase in vaccinations, support the conclusion that routine childhood vaccinations do not contribute to SIDS.

Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy (MSP)
Munchausen's Syndrome refers to a psychiatric disorder where patients pretend to have illnesses, and therefore are subjected to many medical tests and surgical procedures. Of course, these would never have been performed if the patient had not tried to fabricate them. However, the most notorious patients have often had dozens of surgical procedures for factitious (false) symptoms. Thus, this is a form of self-mutilation. Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy (MSP) is a parenting disorder where parents, usually the mother, fabricate symptoms in their children, thus subjecting the child to unnecessary medical tests and/or surgical procedures. In some cases, the parents also inflict injury and can kill their children in the process. MSP is not rare in Apnea Programs. Apnea is the perfect disorder for MSP, because infants appear normal between episodes. Therefore, a parent can bring her baby to a medical facility, fabricate a history of an apparent life threatening event, and the baby will be admitted, many tests performed, sometimes even surgery (such as tracheostomomies) are performed. MSP parents can be quite good at this, often switching from doctor to doctor so that it is difficult for one individual to put it all together. There have been documented cases of MSP in apnea clinics. However, these are much rare than "true" infant apnea.
