Although the cause or causes of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) remain unknown, the incidence of SIDS is on the decline in the United States and other countries. This decline has been accomplished largely through public education campaigns informing parents about several important factors associated with an increased risk of SIDS. These factors are prone and side infant sleeping positions, exposure of infants to cigarette smoke and potentially hazardous sleeping environments. Risk-reduction measures such as placing healthy infants to sleep in the supine position, avoiding passive smoke exposure both before and after birth and optimizing crib safety are beginning to lower the SIDS rate in this country. Through patient education, family physicians can further reduce the incidence of the number one cause of death in infants one week to one year old. A fter decades as the number one cause of death in infants between one week and one year of age, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is declining in the United States.

SIDS and child care
FROM SIDS and child care: In recent years, "back to sleep" campaigns have helped to significantly lower the rates of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in the United States. However, researchers say that the incidence of SIDS remains high in daycare settings, where caretakers may be less likely to be aware of the importance of putting babies on their backs to sleep. "Many child care providers still may be unaware of the importance of supine (back) sleeping and may place infants prone (face-down), when they usually sleep in the supine or side position at home, for reasons of infant comfort," the researchers wrote.

SIDS and muscle function
FROM SIDS and muscle function: For years, physicians have been advising parents to place infants on their backs while sleeping to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Researchers now think they are closer to understanding why sleeping position is important in infants. SIDS, also known as crib death, is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant under 1 year of age. Male, black and American Indian infants are at higher risk. The cause of SIDS is unknown, but placing infants on their stomachs to sleep is an important risk factor.

SIDS and Serotonin Once inexplicable, new studies now uncover some of the brain mechanisms that may underlie SIDS, a term used to describe the death of a seemingly healthy infant during sleep. These discoveries, including those that implicate a brain system that involves the chemical serotonin, could help researchers develop methods to identify babies at risk for SIDS and find new ways to prevent death. The unexpected loss of life has long perplexed parents, physicians, and scientists alike. How? Why? Now, new studies provide some insight into what may underlie these abrupt deaths. One line of work suggests that flaws in a brain system that communicates using the chemical serotonin may make some babies more susceptible to SIDS. These discoveries are leading to:
  • New ideas on how to identify babies at risk for SIDS. New strategies to prevent SIDS.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), also known as Crib Death, refers to the sudden and unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant under one year of age. Each week, 3 babies die of SIDS in Canada. Such deaths usually occur while the child is sleeping and remain unexplained even after a full investigation. Nobody knows how to prevent SIDS, but the latest research shows that there are things you can do to make your baby safer.
Tips
  • Put your baby on his or her back to sleep.
  • Make sure no one smokes around your baby.
  • Avoid putting too many clothes and covers on your baby.
  • Breastfeed your baby, it may give some protection against SIDS.

I know what you must be thinking "SIDS but he's so Old". Thats what I thought too. SIDs is defined as the sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy infant whose death remains a mystery even after a full autopsy and investigation. There are children all over the world over the age of one that are being put to bed and peacefully entering heaven in thier sleep with no cause or recognition. These children aren't infants they are toddlers. This cannot be called SIDS they are not infants. I have heard it called Sudden Unexplained Death Syndrome or SUDS.
Any research over the age of one is terribly hard to find. There is new research everyday for infants but nothing for these precious toddlers. There is way to reduce the risks but when a child is older they cannot help. A toddler cannot be placed a certain way to sleep and expect to stay that way all night. A toddler knows when they are over heated and can remove blankets....so how do we reduse the risks of it happening to toddlers. No one knows. These studies are not done beacuse there are not enough children over the age of one that ddie to do the research. Tell me how many children have to die to be recognized?

The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission and the JPMA have launched a new national safety campaign urging parents not to ever bring babies to sleep with them, but to always put them to sleep in cribs that meet current safety standards. (Note: the JPMA is the Juvenile Products Manufacturer Association - the association for crib manufacturers). This warning was issued because a total of 180 children (out of more than 12 million in the age range) died in an adult bed during the three years studied. This is certainly tragic. BUT, during the same period, many thousands died in cribs! I can see no justification for warning parents never to sleep with their kids!

Study: Sudden infant death risks higher in day care setting
By staff and wire reports CHICAGO (CNN) A substantial number of crib deaths take place in day care settings, where caretakers may be less likely know the importance of putting babies to sleep on their backs, according to a new study. Appearing in the journal Pediatrics, the study of 1,916 SIDS deaths in 11 states found a much higher than expected rate of sudden infant deaths in day care about 20 percent.
