Study: 20 percent of SIDS cases occur in day care
CHICAGO (AP) A significant number of crib deaths occur in day care, where caretakers may be less likely to have heard about the importance of putting babies to sleep on their backs, new research suggests. In a study of 1,916 SIDS cases in 11 states, researchers found that about 20 percent 391 deaths occurred in day-care settings.

    SIDS and Seizures
by Harris L. Coulter, PhD "Crib death" was so infrequent in the pre-vaccination era that it was not even mentioned in the statistics, but it started to climb in the 1950s with the spread of mass vaccination against diseases of childhood. It became a matter of public and professional concern and even acquired a new name, "sudden infant death of unknown origin,." or, for short, SIDS. This name is significant, in the light of subsequent controversies, since "of unknown origin" means exactly that. So, when the medical establishment assures us that SIDS is unrelated to vaccinations, the obvious response is, How do you know?, if it is defined as "of unknown origin"? At this (as with most common-sense questions about vaccinations) the medical establishment prefers to retire from the debate in dignified silence. After all, they say to themselves, you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs. But the eggs being broken are small, helpless, and innocent babies, while the omelette is being enjoyed by the pediatricians and vaccine manufacturers. Death after whooping-cough vaccination was first described by a Danish physician in 1933. Two Americans in 1946 described the deaths of identical twins within 24 hours of a DPT shot (on the background and history of SIDS see H. Coulter and B. Fisher, DPT: A Shot in the Dark ). E. M. Taylor and J. L. Emery in 1982 wrote: "we cannot exclude the possibility of recent immunisation being one of several contributory factors in an occasional unexpected infant death." But the early 1980s were a turning-point in the official line. In that same year of 1982 matters came to a crisis when William C. Torch, M.D., Director of Child Neurology, Department of Pediatrics, University of Nevada School of Medicine, at the 34th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics, presented a study linking the DPT shot with SIDS. Torch concluded: "These data show that DPT vaccination may be a generally unrecognized major cause of sudden infant and early childhood death, and that the risks of immunization may outweigh its potential benefits. A need for reevaluation and possible modification of current vaccination procedures is indicated by this study."

CPSC launches anti-SIDS campaign aimed at blacks
WASHINGTON (AP) Over half of black parents place their babies to sleep on their stomachs or sides, putting them at greater risk of sudden infant death syndrome, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday. Only 31 percent of black parents place babies on their backs, a position that reduces the risk of SIDS, versus 47 percent of white parents, according to a CPSC survey.

Home Search Sitemap Contact ... Research Resources SIDS: "Back to Sleep" Campaign The Back to Sleep campaign is suitably named for its recommendation to place healthy babies on their backs to sleep. Placing babies on their backs to sleep reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), also known as "crib death." This campaign has been successful in promoting infant back sleeping to parents, family members, child care providers, health professionals, and all other caregivers of infants. This campaign is sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the SIDS Alliance, and the Association of SIDS and Infant Mortality Programs.
What's New with Back to Sleep African American infants are at a greater risk for SIDS. To address this issue the Back to Sleep campaign sponsors, the National Black Child Development Institute and several other organizations worked together to develop materials for a new initiative to reduce Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in African American communities. Brochures and magnets are now available. Single copies may be ordered online or by calling the NICHD Information Resource Center (IRC) toll-free at 1-800-370-2943. Multiple copies and the new Resource Kit for Reducing the Risk of SIDS in African American Communities can be ordered through the Back to Sleep ordering line toll-free at 1-800-505-CRIB (2742).

    SIDS: Reducing the risk
May 21, 1999 Web posted at: 11:17 AM EDT (1517 GMT) In this story: What is SIDS? RELATEDS By Michele Bloomquist (WebMD) Sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, is among the greatest fears of parents with newborns. SIDS is the leading cause of death in children 1 month to 1 year old. In the United States, 5,000 to 6,000 infant deaths are attributed to SIDS each year. Although doctors still don't know what causes SIDS, the number of cases in the United States has dropped by nearly 43 percent since 1992, when the National Institutes of Health initiated the "Back to Sleep" public-awareness campaign and provided guidelines for reducing the risk. Chase Cringely
Finding Meaning in a Lost Life
By Robert X. Cringely Chase Cringely sounds like the name of a NASCAR driver. Chase Cringely was my son. He died this week after 74 days of life, a victim of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). He literally stopped breathing lying in my lap while I did e-mail. There was no sound, no struggle. I just looked down and he was no longer alive. I have no idea whether he had been dead for one minute or 10, but we were unable to revive him. He was never sick, he just died, and now there is a void in our lives that we can never fill. Maybe it is inappropriate for a columnist to write about such things, but the only power I have is this bully pulpit, and it just wouldn't be right to not use it to ensure that Chase's death accomplishes something. SIDS is a condition that is little understood. Little babies just stop breathing. Other conditions are sometimes mistaken for SIDS, the most common being child abuse. Little babies just stop breathing because their parents or caregivers have murdered them. This explains the Sonoma County Sheriff's visit to my house at 3 a.m. But Chase, who was a good-natured kid with a pumpkin head, was not abused. He just died. SIDS was a popular medical research subject from 1985 to 1995. In those years, parental abuse was finally identified as a common cause, and certain techniques were developed to help babies stay alive. The most common technique was to remove all blankets and toys from the crib, and to keep the baby on his back. Babies who sleep on their stomachs are twice as likely to die of SIDS. Sleeping solely on their backs reduces the incidence to about one in 2,000 babies. But strict back sleeping also has a developmental downside because apparently the route to genius is best traveled on the belly.

What is SIDS? SIDS is an acronym that stands for sudden infant death syndrome, also known as crib death. SIDS isn't any one illness or disease; it's the diagnosis given when an apparently healthy baby under age 1 dies without warning, and doctors and investigators can't pinpoint a cause after performing a full investigation including an autopsy, review of family and medical history, and examination of the death scene. Each year in the United States, SIDS claims the lives of approximately 3,000 infants, 90 percent of whom are less than 6 months old. Because of the American Academy of Pediatrics' "Back to Sleep" campaign, SIDS death rates have declined more than 42 percent since 1992. Even so, SIDS remains the leading cause of death in U.S. children under a year old.
