Genes linked to SIDS, Parkinson's
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Genes might be linked to more cases of Parkinson's disease than previously thought, and may help confirm that some sudden infant death syndrome cases are due to an uncommon heart defect, new research suggests. Researchers have long debated whether genetics, the environment or a combination play a role in both SIDS and Parkinson's. The studies two on Parkinson's and one on SIDS support theories that genes are a culprit in at least some cases. The studies appear in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association. The Parkinson's studies, from Duke University, offer evidence of a genetic link to late-onset Parkinson's disease cases that develop after age 50 and the most common form of the nervous-system disorder. Most previous genetic research has suggested genes play a role in the much rarer cases that begin earlier in adulthood. The SIDS study, led by researchers from Mayo Clinic and Baylor College of Medicine, found evidence that a gene defect linked to a heart condition known as long QT syndrome may be involved in about 2 percent of U.S. cases, or at least 50 of the nearly 3,000 SIDS deaths nationwide each year.

What if the myths about dreams are true? What if a second real world exists in dreams? What if one person harnessed the metaphysical power behind that mythology? What if he could effortlessly manipulate every aspect of his dream environment at whim? What if he could transfer the spontaneous, limitless creativity of dreams to the physical realm, making earthly reality as malleable as his dreams? And what if this neo-Merlin is a sociopath who also stopped aging mentally at 14? Oneironauticus, is a real-world fantasy novel that asks and answers these questions. Dive into the realm where dreams and reality intertwine! Join Alex on a grand rollercoaster ride of dreams and waking-life events that uproots his (and maybe your) notions of reality. His ethereal adventures explore the depths of dreams, power, guilt, betrayal, and love, while answering questions that he had never thought to ask.

47. AAP - Reduce The Risk Of SIDS
. . Reduce the Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (sids). sids, sometimes known as crib death, strikes nearly 5,000 babies in the United States every year.
http://www.aap.org/new/sids/reduceth.htm
Reduce the Risk of Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant under one year of age. SIDS, sometimes known as crib death, strikes nearly 5,000 babies in the United States every year. Doctors and nurses don't know what causes SIDS, but they have found some things you can do to make your baby safer.
Healthy Babies Should Sleep on Their Back One of the most important things you can do to help reduce the risk of SIDS is to put your healthy baby on his or her back to sleep. Do this when your baby is being put down for a nap or to bed for the night. This is new. Your mother was told and, if you have other children, you may have been told that babies should sleep on their tummy. Now, doctors and nurses believe that fewer babies will die of SIDS if most infants sleep on their back. Check With Your Doctor or Nurse Most babies should sleep on their back. But a few babies have health conditions that might require them to sleep on their tummy. If your baby was born with a birth defect, often spits up after eating, or has a breathing, lung or heart problem, be sure to talk to a doctor or nurse about which sleep position to use. Some mothers worry that babies sleeping on their back may choke on spit-up or vomit during sleep. There is no evidence that sleeping on the back causes choking. Millions of babies around the world now sleep on their back and doctors have not found an increase in choking or other roblems.

Positioning and SIDS: Update
Task Force on Infant Positioning and SIDS
Abstract: This statement provides an update to the June 1992 AAP policy, "Infant Positioning and SIDS," which recommended that healthy term infants be placed on their sides or backs to sleep. Recent data show that the original policy appears to have had a positive effect in decreasing the prevalence of prone sleeping significantly. Simultaneously, the SIDS rate in the United States has also dropped. New data also suggest that the supine position confers the lowest risk; however, the side position is still significantly safer than the prone position. Additional information regarding sleeping surface and exceptions to these recommendations are addressed. In April 1992, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a statement recommending that healthy infants be placed for sleep on their sides or backs, rather than being placed prone. The recommendation was based on numerous reports from other countries that showed that the prone sleeping position is associated with a higher incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The statement was followed by a detailed report from the Task Force on Infant Positioning and SIDS, which was published in the June 1992 issue of Pediatrics .[1] In 1994, another statement in

Sleep Disorders Did You Know?
  • Daytime performance and school grades might be impaired by sleep apnea (absence of breathing during sleep) and poor sleep habits.
  • Daytime sleepiness, hyperactivity and aggressive behavior can often be noted in children that snore.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea is present in up to 20 percent of children in the lowest 10th percentile of their school class.
  • Infants should sleep on their backs in a crib with a firm, tight-fitting mattress to reduce the risk of the child rolling over and suffocating on bedding.

Anti-immunisation scare: The inconvenient facts
Dr. Steve Basser
(Vol 17, No 1)
Introduction
Over the last few years immunisation rates in Australia have fallen. As a result there have been outbreaks of the infectious diseases immunisation is designed to combat. Earlier this year there was a significant outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough) with at least three children dying from this preventable disease. There has been a lot of media attention focused on the immunisation issue, and in an attempt at ‘balanced’ reporting the views of individuals and groups who oppose immunisation have been given plenty of coverage. The most well known example of this was the ABC TV Quantum two part series aired on September 26 and October 3, 1996. The Australian Skeptics have been critical of the media in the past when they have unquestioningly given coverage to issues such as alien abductions or astrology. Can we now have our cake and eat it too? Is it reasonable to expect the media to only present the ‘immunisation is good’ message? Are there really two sides to the immunisation ‘debate’? This is the question the sceptical scientist should be asking. Perhaps the answer lies in the distinction between scientific evidence and individual opinion. There will be a number of different opinions, or beliefs, about immunisation but, as the Australian Skeptics have so often observed, believing something to be so does not necessarily make it so.

(CNN) Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS has been a mystery for decades. But the results from a large study released Monday confirm what researchers have been recommending for the past 10 years putting infants on their backs to sleep greatly reduces the risk of SIDS. Rates of SIDS decreased by 50 percent since this policy was introduced. Still, the message isn't getting to all groups. CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta joined anchor Bill Hemmer to take a look at the problem. GUPTA : I will tell you first of all SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants one month to one year old. That is an important thing to keep in mind. SIDS, or crib death, leads to about 5,000 deaths per year.

Vaccines and
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Is There a Link? A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that children diagnosed with asthma (a respiratory ailment not unlike SIDS) were five times more likely than not to have received pertussis vaccine.(1) Another study found that babies die at a rate eight times greater than normal within three days after getting a DPT shot.(2) The three primary doses of DPT are given at two months, four months, and six months. About 85 percent of SIDS cases occur at one through six months, with the peak incidence at age two to four months. In a recent scientific study of SIDS, episodes of apnea (cessation of breathing) and hypopnea (abnormally shallow  breathing) were measured before and after DPT vaccinations. "Cotwatch" (a precise breathing monitor) was used, and the computer printouts it generated (in integrals of the weighted apnea-hypopnea density WAHD) were analyzed. The data clearly shows that vaccination caused an extraordinary increase in episodes where breathing either nearly ceased or stopped completely. These episodes continued for months following vaccinations. Dr. Viera Scheibner, the author of the study, concluded that "vaccination is the single most prevalent and most preventable cause of infant deaths."(3) (See the diagram below.)
In another study of 103 children who died of SIDS, Dr. William Torch, of the University of Nevada School of Medicine at Reno, found that more than two-thirds had been vaccinated with DPT prior to death. Of these, 6.5 percent died within 12 hours of vaccination; 13 percent within 24 hours; 26 percent within three days; and 37, 61, and 70 percent within one, two, and three weeks, respectively (see the diagram below). He also found that SIDS frequencies have a bimodal-peak occurrence at two and four months the same ages when initial doses of DPT are administered to infants.(4)
