Study: 20 percent of SIDS cases occur in day care
CHICAGO (AP) A significant number of crib deaths occur in day care, where caretakers may be less likely to have heard about the importance of putting babies to sleep on their backs, new research suggests. In a study of 1,916 SIDS cases in 11 states, researchers found that about 20 percent 391 deaths occurred in day-care settings.

WHAT IS SIDS?
Download this document in PDF format. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden death of an infant under 1 year of age which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history (Willinger et al., 1991). SIDS is…
  • the major cause of death in infants from 1 month to 1 year of age, with most deaths occurring between 2 and 4 months sudden and silentthe infant was seemingly healthy a death often associated with sleep and with no signs of suffering a recognized medical disorder determined only after an autopsy, an examination of the death scene, and a review of the infant's and family's clinical histories a diagnosis of exclusion an infant death that leaves unanswered questions, causing intense grief for parents and families
SIDS is not…
  • preventable, but the risk can be reduced by placing the baby on his or her back to sleep on a firm surface, by making sure the baby has a smoke-free environment, and by keeping the baby from being overheated suffocation caused by vomiting and choking or by minor illnesses such as colds or infection caused by the diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus (DPT) vaccines or other immunizations

A lack of answers is partly what makes sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) so frightening. SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants who are 1 month to 1 year old, but despite years of research and numerous studies, SIDS is still unpredictable and unpreventable. However, research into the causes of SIDS has led doctors to recommend steps parents can take to reduce the risk of SIDS in their infants. As more parents begin to follow that advice, the number of deaths from SIDS is dropping. Searching for Answers
SIDS is frequently described as a parent's worst nightmare because it strikes without warning, usually in seemingly healthy babies. As the name implies, SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant who is younger than 1 year old. Most SIDS deaths are associated with sleep (hence the common reference to "crib death"), and infants who die of SIDS show no signs of suffering. While most conditions or diseases usually are diagnosed by the presence of specific symptoms, SIDS is a diagnosis of exclusion, given only after all other possible causes of death have been ruled out through an autopsy, an examination of the death scene, and a complete review of the infant's medical history. These procedures help distinguish true SIDS deaths from those resulting from accidents, abuse, and previously undiagnosed conditions, such as cardiac or metabolic disorders. When considering which babies could be most at risk, Marj Hershberger, a certified pediatric nurse practitioner, notes that no single risk factor is likely to be sufficient to cause a SIDS death. Rather, several risk factors combined may contribute to cause an at-risk infant to die of SIDS.

Risk Factor or Not Dear Friends, The following article hit the news this morning. We have received many e-mail messages asking for more information. The public has been on an information roller coaster, the result of an explosion of medical reports, each heralding a 'breakthrough in SIDS research. We need to help people separate myth from fact and risk factor from cause. We are currently gathering more information about this specific research and will keep you updated. Please keep the following in mind: - When it comes to media coverage of SIDS, we often feel a sense of frustration in being confronted with misleading headlines, announcements of so-called breakthroughs and statements taken out of context. - Please read the article, "Mass Media's" Role in SIDS Education, at <

Pacifiers may reduce babies' risk of SIDS
May 10, 1999 Web posted at: 2:45 p.m. EDT (1845 GMT) From Medical Correspondent Rhonda Rowland (CNN) Pacifiers, often discouraged for babies, may substantially reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, mounting research suggests. Researchers evaluated seven studies that included a total of 800 infants. "It's not really clear that pacifier use prevents SIDS; it is clear that babies that use pacifiers as a group have a lower risk of SIDS," said Dr. John Brooks of Dartmouth Medical School Children's Hospital. SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants between 1 month and 1 year of age. It is a disorder in which an infant death remains unexplained after all known causes have been ruled out. It usually occurs during sleep.
