This year, 2003, the American sids Institute celebrates its 20th anniversary. Since 1983, the rate of sids has fallen by over 50 percent.

A Message from the Chairman
Marc Peterzell This year, 2003, the American SIDS Institute celebrates its 20th anniversary. We have much to celebrate. Because of efforts by the Institute and other organizations, the sudden infant death rate is at an all time low. Since 1983, the rate of SIDS has fallen by over 50 percent. Sadly, there are still about 2,500 deaths per year in the United States, and thousands more throughout the world. We believe that within our lifetime, we can eliminate SIDS as a cause of infant death, but only with the financial and personal support of corporations, foundations and concerned individuals. There are many ways institutions and individuals can contribute to this effort which are available through the Institute's website or through its office. Please join us in this fight. The death of even one more infant is intolerable! Together we can end the tragedy of SIDS. Vaccinations and Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy The Institute of Medicine has published the report regarding the use of vaccines during the first year of life and SIDS. Below are links to sites that deal with the subject of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In addition to support for bereaved parents, a number of sites advance ways that potentially may help to prevent or reduce the risk of SIDS. Baby Place does not take responsibility for the content on those sites, but is providing links to them in the hopes that some of the information will help to reduce the occurrence of SIDS in the future. Some of the prevention or risk-reduction techniques mentioned may be new or experimental, and therefore we recommend that parents consult with healthcare professionals before utilizing any information on the sites below. We also want to clarify that the word "prevention" on this page refers to either risk-reduction techniques or a goal for the future, as there is no currently no scientifically-proven way to prevent SIDS 100% of the time. A comfort zone for grieving families who have lost a child to sids (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Families it. sids Families Updates.

Click above to honour the babies whose families have sponsored the site this month
This website is intended to commemorate the lives of the many babies who were victims of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). SIDS is not a disease, SIDS is basically a fancy way of saying, "We have no idea why this baby died." I hope this site will also offer parents and other family members a comfort zone online to come to when they need to talk freely about the baby they love and miss so much. I have been told many times by grieving parents that they felt like they'd come home when they found SIDS Families, and I am truly proud that what I've done in memory of my son Jacob has touched the lives of so many others in such positive ways. I hope that you'll find comfort and support here as well. This site is my personal work to make SIDS more bearable for the families whose child has died. Our family was devastated by SIDS in April 1999 when our 2 ½ month old son Jacob died. I searched online and couldn't find anything comforting, just cold statistical sites, lots of so-called "prevention" type articles, but nothing that helped show me that I could somehow survive the greatest tragedy I'd ever faced. Six months after Jacob's death I started this website to give families a place to come together and share. It's terrible to know you're not the only family that has suffered such a terrible tragedy, but at the same time there is a comfort that comes with knowing you're not alone, that others have walked this journey before you and that, somehow, they've survived. Somehow that knowledge makes it seem possible for you to learn to live again too.

http://www.sids.org/nprevent.htm
What Can Be Done? Unfortunately, we cannot expect to prevent all SIDS deaths now. To do so requires a much greater understanding of SIDS, which will be achieved only with a commitment from those who value babies and with a considerably expanded research effort. However, there are things that can be done to reduce the risk of SIDS. Parents-To-Be Get medical care early in pregnancy, preferably within the first three months, followed by regular checkups at the doctor's office or health clinic. Make every effort to assure good nutrition. These measures can reduce the risk of premature birth, a major risk factor for SIDS. Do not smoke, use cocaine, or use heroin. Tobacco, cocaine, or heroin use during pregnancy increases the infant's risk for SIDS. Take care to prevent becoming pregnant during the teenage years. If you are a teen and already have one infant, take extreme caution not to become pregnant again. The SIDS rate decreases for babies born to older mothers. It is highest for babies born to teenage mothers. The more babies a teen mother has, the greater at risk they are. Wait at least one year between the birth of a child and the next pregnancy. The shorter the interval between pregnancies, the higher the SIDS rate.

The member organisations are all dedicated to the same goals of solving the mystery of SIDS; providing support for families who have experienced the death of a child and educating the community about SIDS. One of the true benefits of SIDS International is the ability to motivate and encourage parents, researchers and other health professionals to continue their work in the SIDS arena. By reducing the sense of isolation that many SIDS organisations felt, reflective of the isolation that many SIDS families feel when their baby died, a forum was established that facilitated the sharing of experiences, ideas, initiatives and knowledge of SIDS.

The Smallest Angels Memorial Wall
http://www.geocities.com/smallestangels/index.html
This is a memorial wall made especially for children who have died from SIDS [Sudden Infant Death Syndrome]. Please use the form at the bottom of the page to send me your information. Many more children die of SIDS in a year than all who die of cancer, heart disease, pneumonia, child abuse, AIDS, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy combined. SIDS remains the leading cause of death in the United States among infants between 1 month and 1 year of age and second only to congenital anomalies as the leading overall cause of death for all infants less than 1 year of age. Babies are not supposed to die. Because the death of an infant is traumatic for parents, family, and friends, I hope that this page fills some small void in the lives of the parents and families of those who have lost a child to SIDS. Please remember to pray for all the little angels and their families while you are visiting. If you would like to raise the awareness of SIDS at your site please use the HTML given below in order to place this banner and the link to the mailing list at your website. Reducing The Risks For SIDS
Some Steps Parents Can Take
What is Meant by Risk Factors? Risk factors by themselves do not cause Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, but can have a negative effect on infant well-being. In fact, as many as two thirds of SIDS victims have no known risk factors, and, most babies with one or more of these risk factors will not become SIDS victims. Therefore, while doctors are hopeful that following the recommendations we have described may reduce the risk of SIDS, we must understand that following the recommendations faithfully will still not prevent all SIDS deaths. Research must continue if we are to discover how and why SIDS occurs, and expand upon these and other risk factors. The following recommendations come from, "Changing Concepts of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: Implications for Infant Sleeping Environment and Sleep Position (RE9946)", AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS, Task Force on Infant Sleep Position and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (March 2000).
