shingles PHN Your Questions Answered. Have you had chickenpox? Herpes zoster or shingles, an outbreak of rash or blisters on the skin, can be very painful.
http://www.vzvfoundation.org/shingles&phn.html
Have you had chickenpox?
Are you over the age of 50?

I
f you answered "yes" to both questions, then you may be among the nearly one million Americans who will develop shingles over the next twelve months.
Why worry about it?
Herpes zoster or shingles, an outbreak of rash or blisters on the skin, can be very painful. The rash and pain usually occur in a band on one side of the body, or clustered on one side of the face.
How do you get it?
Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes varicella or chickenpox in 95 percent of Americans by age 18. Following a bout of chickenpox, the virus lies dormant, or asleep in nerve tissues. However, in an estimated one out of seven people over the course of an 85-year lifetime, the virus can reappear as shingles.
Why not let shingles run its course?
In otherwise healthy individuals, shingles may disappear without major consequence in two to four weeks. But the risk of complications from shingles increases with age, weakened immunity (the body's ability to ward off disease) and delay or lack of treatment.

Applying Asphalt Shingles
Composite (asphalt) or fiberglass shingles is the most common roofing now in use. It is composed of asphalt impregnated paper with mineral granules coating the exposed surface. Numerous colors and styles are available to enhance the design of your garage. Shingles are easy to install, require little maintenance and are easy to repair. Wind sealed shingles have an added dab of roofing cement under the bottom edge of each shingle. After these are installed and the roof is heated by the sun, the cement melts and sticks to the shingle below, increasing their effectiveness in high wind areas or on shallow sloped roofs.
Most Common Mistakes:
  • Leaving out the starter strip. Not keeping shingles aligned.

Shingle Roofing Layers We own a home that has three layers of shingle roofing. The top one is beginning to look kind of rough and before it gets to hot and humid I want to re-roof. My question is how many layers is too many? Would four be totally out of the question? I realize that it would definitely be better to strip it all and start anew, but this would be much more expensive and time consuming (I have very little to spare), and it would be much better if I could do this. Can you give me some honest advice? I have gotten very mixed responses from friends and local contractors. I would be surprised if you were getting advice from anyone that said 4 layers is ok. I wouldn't even go 3 layers. So count me with the folks saying strip it. If you can stand on your roof, you can do it yourself. (steeper pitches are probably too much trouble) Call and have one of those big dumpsters dropped off in your yard (the closer to the roof the better. Then using a flat bladed shovel, push all those bad layers off. It is hard work, but no tricks involved. Now is the time to see how many friends you really have. The more the merrier. Tearing off old asphalt roofing In two weeks I will be tearing old asphalt roofing off a small cottage. What is the best tool to use to remove the existing material? Some of the roof has three-tab shingles, but most is covered by rolled asphalt which is nailed down and anchored by generous amounts of tar. Some friends have suggested using a snow shovel; another friend said I should use a garden pitchfork. Surely, someone makes a tool designed specifically for this purpose, no?

Print this Page document.write ( "E-mail to a Friend" ); document.write ( "" ); Chickenpox Vaccine Increases Risk for Shingles Scientists said on Thursday that vaccinating children against chickenpox (varicella) could increase the risk that adults would develop shingles, a painful blistering rash that is potentially dangerous in the elderly. The team, at Britain's Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS), said that although vaccination would save thousands of lives over time, thousands of elderly people could also die from the complications of shingles, known as herpes zoster. Writing in the journal Vaccine, they called for a re-evaluation of the policy of mass chickenpox vaccination that has been introduced already in the United States and is imminent in many other countries. In 1995, the chickenpox vaccine was approved for use in children over 1 year of age in the US and is now required for school entry.

    What is shingles?
Shingles is a localized infection due to the same virus that causes chickenpox. It occurs only in people who have had chickenpox in the past and represents a reactivation of the dormant virus. Why the virus reactivates in some individuals and not in others is unknown. Shingles can appear many years after a person has had chickenpox. Who gets shingles?
Anyone who has had chickenpox in the past can get shingles. The disease is primarily seen in persons with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly and those with certain underlying medical conditions. It is estimated that 10-20% of the entire population and up to 50% of those persons who live beyond 80 years will have at least one episode of shingles. How is shingles spread?
A person must have already had chickenpox in the past to develop shingles. Contact with a person with shingles does not cause another person's dormant virus to reactivate. However, the virus from a patient with shingles may cause chickenpox in someone who has not had chickenpox. What are the symptoms of shingles?

One step up from cold sores, shingles is caused by a closely related virus. It is particularly nasty if the immune system is not working properly, during illness or while on treatment for cancer. It is rare to develop shingles more than once. Symptoms A tingling itchy feeling happens before a painful rash appears. It is only found on one side of the body. It can develop over the next few hours or days into a painful set of blisters. It usually follows a narrow strip of skin. Common sites include the chest wall, face and upper legs. A general flu-like illness often comes with the rash, which may last after the rash has gone. Causes If you have never had chickenpox, you are very unlikely to develop shingles which is caused by the same virus. Prevention It is difficult to prevent. Most people will develop the infection without realising where it came from. Complications Although sometimes very painful, shingles is rarely serious. People who are suffering from any condition or medicine which lowers their resistance to infection can be quite ill. If it spreads onto the tip of the nose it may affect the eye you should see your doctor immediately.

Facts About Chickenpox and Shingles For Adults
    What is chickenpox?
Chickenpox, also known as varicella, is a very contagious disease caused by the varicella virus. It is spread easily through the air by infected people when they sneeze or cough. The disease also spreads through contact with an infected person's chickenpox blisters. People who have never had chickenpox can get infected just by being in a room with someone who has the disease. Symptoms of Chickenpox
Early symptoms may include achiness, fever, fatigue, irritability and sore throat. An itchy, blistering rash then appears which can develop into as many as 250-500 blisters. The rash may even spread into the mouth or other internal parts of the body. In people who have been infected, symptoms appear between 10 and 21 days after exposure to the varicella virus. What is Shingles?
Some people who have had chickenpox may develop shingles later in life. Shingles, or zoster, is a common illness that may strike 1 in 5 Americans. It is caused by a reactivation of the same varicella virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles is associated with normal aging and with anything that weakens the immune system such as certain medications, cancers, infections or inborn disorders. Symptoms of Shingles
A painful, blistering rash tends to occur on one side of the body, usually on the trunk or face. There may be pain, numbness or tingling of the area 2-4 days before the rash appears. Pain or numbness can persist, sometimes for as long as a year, after the rash is gone. Damage can occur to the eyes or other organs if involved during a shingles outbreak.

Chickenpox (varicella) and shingles (herpes zoster) are distinct diseases caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). The VZV is a herpesvirus. Chickenpox is a highly contagious rash that usually occurs in childhood. It is the manifestation of a primary infection. Shingles is usually a localized, unilateral (occurs on one side of the body) eruption that follows a linear pattern along a nerve. Shingles is a reactivation of a dormant varicella-zoster virus. Causes Approximately 90% of chickenpox cases occur in children under 10 years of age. The infection is usually transmitted by airborne droplets containing the virus. Less often, the virus is spread by direct contact with the blisters. After exposure, the typical incubation period is 2 weeks. One is contagious a couple of days before the rash appears. Rarely, chickenpox is transmitted through the blood of an infected mother to a fetus. Shingles cannot be acquired from another person. Shingles is caused by reactivation of the dormant virus. While shingles can occur at any age, more than two-thirds of cases occur in people over 50 years of age. Shingles is 20 to 100 times more common in immune compromised individuals, such as HIV patients and the elderly, as well as those whose immune systems are suppressed by medication or chemotherapy. An individual who has never had chickenpox could develop the infection by coming into contact with shingles blisters.
