S
exually transmitted diseases, or STDs, are infections that can be transferred from one person to another through sexual contact. According to the Centers for Disease Control there are over 15 million cases of sexually transmitted disease cases reported annually. Adolescents and young adults (15-24) are the age groups at the greatest risk for acquiring an STD, 3 million becoming infected each year. Most STDs are treatable. However, even the once easily cured gonorrhea has become resistant to many of the older traditional antibiotics. Other STDs, such as herpes, AIDS, and genital warts, all of which are caused by viruses, have no cure. Some of these infections are very uncomfortable, while others can be deadly. Syphilis, AIDS, genital warts, herpes, hepatitis, and even gonorrhea have all been known to cause death. Many STDs can lead to related conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease cervical cancer , and complications in pregnancy. Therefore, education about these diseases and prevention is important.

The Truth about Condoms
Condoms are a barrier method of contraception that, when used consistently and correctly, can prevent pregnancy by blocking the passage of semen into the vaginal canal. Condoms can also prevent the exchange of blood, semen, and vaginal secretions, which are the primary routes of STD transmission. In recent years, as a result of misinformation and insufficient research, the efficacy of condoms, especially in terms of STD prevention, has been debated in many forums. Research continues to show that condoms are one of the best methods of preventing unwanted pregnancy and are one of the only methods for sexually active individuals to protect themselves against STDs, including HIV. This updated Fact Sheet includes information on both the male and female condom; on their effectiveness in protecting against unplanned pregnancies and STDs, including HIV; and on condom breakage and slippage, regulations and tests, and consistent and correct use. This Fact Sheet is designed to provide the most recent information about condoms and to clear up confusion and misunderstandings. MALE CONDOM The male condom is a barrier method of contraception that is placed over the glans and shaft of the penis. Male condoms are available in latex, lambskin, and polyurethane.

Sexually Transmitted Infections
(STIs) In Women
Medical Author: Carolyn Janet Crandall, MD, FACP
Medical Editor: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR Gonorrhea Conclusions What are sexually transmitted infections?
In this article, the terms "sexually transmitted infections" or "STIs" are replacing the outdated terminology "sexually transmitted diseases" or "STDs." Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that can be transferred from one person to another through sexual contact. STIs probably have been around for thousands of years, but the most worrisome, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS, has only been recognized since 1984. It is important to realize that sexual contact includes more than just sexual intercourse (vaginal and anal). Sexual contact includes kissing, oral-genital contact, and the use of sexual "toys" such as vibrators. Most STIs are treatable. However, even gonorrhea, once easily cured, has become resistant to many of the older traditional antibiotics. Other STIs, such as herpes, AIDS, and genital
