Fairview, a stately northern Kentucky home built in 1860, sits high on a hill surrounded by 44 acres of beautiful bluegrass countryside. During the Civil War, several families sought refuge at Fairview while husbands and fathers were off scouring the hills for rebel raiding parties. Nearly 140 years later, Fairview still serves as a safe haven for the people within its walls, for today Fairview houses Pure Life Ministries (PLM), the temporary home of some 30 men who are struggling to overcome addictions to pornography and sexual sin.

"My clients often ask me how they can tell if their thoughts and activities are addictive as they move along in the process of recovery and no longer find themselves pulled to the clearly addictive use of sexual energy. The answer that makes intuitive sense to me is to check whether thoughts or actions are narrowing down and constricting your experience of life or are opening up and enhancing it. Addiction searches for the most immediate pleasure and prevention of pain. This is quite different from a life that is expansive - open to the pain of grief, the despair of healing from loneliness and the enriching joy of living life fully." Bill V. 3.5 RELASPE PLAN I was introduced to the idea of a relaspe plan in Patrick Carnes' Contrary_to_Love. At first the concept seemed self-defeating. Customer Reviews Excellent, Thorough, Understanding of This Problem I've been addicted to sex, masturbation, pornography, adultery, and so many other sexually compulsive acts while attempting to maintain a control and image in my life. This disease has no end; its levels of destruction are limitless. Dr. Carnes in this book completely lays out how this addiction originates, how it operates, and how it consumates. This is the most thorough book I have read on sexual addiction yet it falls severely short in assisting the addict with overcoming this problem. As far as recovery, you'll have to purchase another. An especially good book for coaddicts This is a good book for anyone who wants to understand the basic emotional and psychosexual dynamics of sexual addiction but the problem I did have with it was that it was written to understand the male addict. Although the dynamics from the human level are essentially the same there are some differences.

Email this article Printer-friendly format Comments This is an article about what would have happened if President Clinton had been in an intent to learn about his feelings instead of acting out of his sexual addiction. What if he had cared more about upholding the integrity of his true Self than about acting out on his need to fill his emptiness and validate his ego with sexual attention? What if President Clinton had been practicing Inner Bonding? What if he had been operating as a loving Adult rather than a wounded child-adult? What if he had moved into an intent to learn about his sexual addiction rather than acted out on it? What if he were really willing to take full personally responsibility for his own feelings and behavior? What if he were devoted to telling the truth? What if being a loving human being, acting with integrity, was his highest priority? Obviously, things would be very different right now for Clinton if he had been operating as a loving Adult. As a loving Adult, he would not have convinced himself that what he was doing was okay, and that he would not get caught. As a loving Adult, he would have recognized that he needed help with healing the underlying causes of his sexual addiction. As a loving Adult, he would have cared more about upholding the integrity of his core Self than about acting out on his need to fill his emptiness and validate his wounded self with sexual attention. As a loving Adult, he would have care more about his wife, his daughter, and his country, than about a moment of pleasure. As a loving Adult, even if he had failed himself and us with his addictive behavior - after all, we are all human and we all make our mistakes - he would have told the truth and taken full responsibility for his actions.

    Cycle of Sexual Addiction
Sexual behaviors that are compulsive and continue despite serious consequences are usually a sign of sexual addiction. Like other addicts, sex addicts engage in distorted thinking; rationalizing, defending and justifying their behavior while blaming others for resulting problems. They deny having a problem and make excuses for their behavior. Sex addicts usually participate compulsively in more than one type of sexual behavior... ie: compulsive masturbation, viewing pornography and patronizing prostitutes. Although some sex addicts are hypersexual, most are not. For the addict who has affairs, the thrill of the chase and conquest rather than the sexual experience itself may be the source of excitement. Like other addictions, the sex addicts report progression of their disease; ie: taking increasingly greater risks or trying new sexual behaviors to maintain the same euphoric effect. Sex addicts tend to sexualize other people and situations, finding sexual connotations in the most ordinary incident or remark.

Sexual Addiction and Internet Sexual Addiction
Just like many addictions, sexual addiction and Internet sexual addiction can create a level of shame and guilt in the person that is very intense. The shame and guilt is usually experienced immediately following each sexual binge, and will grow more and more intense as the addiction progresses. The shame and guilt may become so intense as to provoke feelings and thoughts of suicide. We have seen people who, because of their Internet sexual addiction, have made very poor, destructive, and uncharacteristic decisions. For example, I have treated a number of people who's Internet sexual addiction influenced them to view pornographic material that is not only illegal, but highly destructive, such as child pornography; or who were so engaged in the fantasy realm of the Internet, coupled with their sexual addiction, and made the decision to meet a child or young teenager who they met on the Internet, in real life. The strangest part of this is that many of these individuals were not sexually or physically abused as children, and may have no other history of inappropriate or illegal sexual behavior. Signs and Symptoms of Sexual Addiction and Internet Sexual Addiction

    Sexual Addiction
Sexual addiction or sexual compulsivity is indicated when individuals engage in persistent and escalating patterns of sexual behavior, acting out in spite of negative consequences to self and others. Addictive sexual behaviors may include compulsive masturbation, consistent use of pornography, unsafe sex, multiple affairs, sexual anorexia, multiple or anonymous partners, telephone or cybersex, sexual massage, escorts, or prostitution. Consequences usually develop emotionally and physically, in relationships, and in social, legal, and financial areas of life. Sexual addiction can affect both males and females. The article below may provide some insight about women dealing with sexual addiction. Controlled By Desire
By Carol J. Ross, MA, CADAC
Published In February 1998 Issue of
    Professional Counselor Magazine
Judy always felt different. Much like her childhood friends, men would be pleased and amazed by her sexual desires, but they would quickly leave her, physically or emotionally. Judy blamed the men. They simply couldn't handle her unquenchable desires. They couldn't keep up with her. They used her. She also blamed herself. If she just kept trying harder to intrigue and please men sexually, she thought, eventually she would find the right mate—one as "sexually mature" as herself. After finding that mate, her fantasy life with her husband soon crumbled into terror at his rage and his physical brutality toward her. Her depression, suicidal plans, and an uncharacteristic lack of sexual desire began to overshadow her life.

    Recovery from Sexual Addiction
Recovery from Sexual Addiction an interview with Mark Laaser Mark Laaser, author of , has been a friend of the NACR since it's inception. He understands sexual addiction from both personal experience and from working with sex addicts in several treatment programs. In his books and seminars Mark has offered hope and healing to thousands of co-strugglers. We interviewed him recently by phone from his home near Minneapolis, Minnesota. STEPS: I'd like to start by talking about some of the common myths and misunderstandings about sexual addiction. First of all, there have been quite a few stories in the news recently about sexual offenders. In several conversations about those news reports I have been struck by the fact that people in the Christian community are often unable to distinguish between sexual offenders and sexual addicts. Mark: It's a common misunderstanding. But only a very small percentage of sexual addicts become sexual offenders. The cases that make the newspapers are, however, the most perverse cases and therefore have an exaggerated effect on people's perception of the problem of sexual addiction. But offenders are only 1 percent or less of the people who struggle with sexual addiction. It's important to remember than a sexual offender is a person who has used physical force to gain sexual access or who has used some kind of emotional or even spiritual force to gain control over a person physically, emotionally or spiritually in order to gain sexual access. That improper use of force or authority is what, in my mind, puts a person in the category of sexual offender. For example, a pastor who uses the authority of his role to gain sexual access to people who respect that authority - that's what we mean by sexual offender.

Women and Sexual Addiction by Marnie Ferree Sin or Disease?
So what is the solution? Sexual addiction is a multifaceted disease, and it requires a multifaceted solution. There is a physiological aspect to the problem. We know that there is a neurochemical component to sex addiction. The neurochemical changes that happen in your brain when you engage in sexual activity are closely related to the changes that take place in your brain when you take crack cocaine. So there is a physiological, biological base to this addiction. There is also an emotional component to this addiction. The shame that the addicted person feels is overwhelming. There is a mental component. There is a relationship component. And there is a spiritual component. All these components need to be addressed if the addicted person is to experience healing. Characteristics of Addiction
There are other characteristics to all addictions. All addictions lead to an unmanageable life. It is a progressive or degenerative process. Addictions are used to escape feelings. What an addiction does is alter our moods.

Sexual Addiction The essence of all addiction is the addicts' experience of powerlessness over a compulsive behavior, resulting in their lives becoming unmanageable. The addict is out of control and experiences tremendous shame, pain and self-loathing. The addict may wish to stop, yet repeatedly fails to do so. The key elements of any addiction, whether chemical or behavioral are:
    • Compulsiveness: A loss of control over the behavior, i.e., continuing to engage in a particular behavior after repeated attempts to stop.
    • Continuing the behavior despite adverse consequences, such as loss of job, money, marriage, or health or arrests or public humiliation.
    • Preoccupation or obsession with obtaining and using the substance or participating in the behavior to the detriment of other essential life activities or goals

“As a Christian man, the problem you have is a lack of faith. You just need to pray more and try harder, since the problem obviously isn’t on God’s side.” “You’ll be healed in an instant.”
    Two professional mis-truths
When I went for the standard psychological evaluation to enter the ordination process to be a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA), I asked the psychologist about masturbation. She said that masturbation is normal. 90% or more of men do it. (Wrong. It is not normal in my case.)
