Sexual Addiction Sexual desire can be healthy and safe, but like the desire to drink or eat, it can also grow beyond a person's control. And when it does, it can create problems in other aspects of life such as family, friendship, career and recreation. Sex addicts feel they need greater and greater sexual stimulation, more and more often, and will sacrifice almost anything to get it. In this section, you'll find a description of sexual addiction and a thorough catalog of the symptoms commonly associated with it. You'll also find information on how to get help. Sexual Addiction What is Sexual Addiction? Sexual Addiction may be understood by comparing it to other types of addiction. Chemical addicts find they need drugs to feel normal. in Sexual Addiction, a parallel situation exists. Sex provides the "high" and addicts become dependent on this sexual high to feel normal. They substitute healthy relationships for unhealthy ones and opt for temporary pleasure rather than the deeper quality of "normal" intimate relationships. Sexual Addiction follows the same progressive nature of other addictions. Sexual addicts struggle to control their behaviors, and experience despair over constant failure to do so. Examples of Out of Control Sexual Behavior
  • Compulsive Masturbation
  • Indulging in pornography
  • Having multiple affairs
  • Exhibitionism
  • Dangerous sexual practices
  • Prostitution
  • Anonymous sex
  • Compulsive sexual episodes
  • Voyeurism
Factors in Sexual Addiction Seventy to seventy five percent have thought about suicide. Many sex addicts suffer from broken relationships. Forty percent experience severe marital and other relationship problems . The factors can result in an unstable family environment. Physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse and neglect of the children may occur. In one study, the following factors in the sex addicts childhood were identified:

Free From Sexual Addiction
By Steve Gallagher, as told to Bob Davies
I degenerated into a steady diet of hard-core porno movies. Conviction ate at me like a cancer, But I couldn't quit. I gripped the phone harder, hardly believing it was my wife at the other end.
"I don't love you, Steve," she said coldly. "I'm with another man and I'm not coming back." "Fine," I jeered. "Then you can listen to me blow my brains out." I pulled out my off-duty revolver, spun the cylinder around and clicked it in place, right next to the earpiece. Then I pointed it at my head. "Don't do it, Steve," I heard her yell. I hesitated, then put down the gun. Somehow, it didn't really seem to matter whether I lived or died. Life seemed so meaningless. I think my problems started when I was small. My dad was an alcoholic and he emotionally abused me. "You're never going to amount to anything," he'd often say to me. I was crushed. My mother was a sweet Christian woman who took me to church. But as I got older, I began to hate it and refused to go anymore. I craved attention and did all kinds of daring things, just to get people to notice me. I started taking drugs at 14, and became totally rebellious against authority-especially teachers and cops.

51. "Sexual Orientation," Sexual Addiction And "Coming Out" Of Homosexuality
Sexual Orientation, sexual addiction and Coming Out of Homosexuality. by Tony Marco, copyright 1995. Pink triangles. Silence = Death buttons.
http://www.stonewallrevisited.com/issues/marco1.html
"Sexual Orientation," Sexual Addiction and "Coming Out" of Homosexuality
Pink triangles. "Silence = Death" buttons. "It's O.K. to Be Gay" banners. During this year's "National Coming Out Week," thousands of students and noteboards on college and university campuses across America will broadcast "gay pride" messages like these. Most of the students doing the broadcasting will be gay and say they're proud of it. Many will be "coming out of the closet" sharing their gay identity openly for the first time. Have you thought about joining them? You may already have been asked. I'm sure you've heard "Coming Out Week" leaders say loud and clear that "coming out" is one of the most important events in a gay person's life. It means taking your "rightful" place in America's emerging, visible gay subculture, they say. "Coming out," they say, means a milestone victory over fear, alienation and ambivalence over "who we are." What is "coming out" like for a gay person? "Like being 'born again' is to an evangelical Christian," one "coming out" leader put it.
"Coming Out" Often the Beginning of "Gay Rights" Activism
But gay men and women often "come out of the closet" not only to "take their rightful place in the gay community." Spurred by gay activists, they also "come out" to claim solidarity with the political aims of the "gay rights" movement.

Coping with Sexual Addiction Society is becoming increasingly aware that sex can become an addiction. Just as people become addicted to other harmful behaviorsdrinking, smoking, unhealthy relationships, or overeatingindividuals can become addicted to various unhealthy kinds of sexual behavior. Like the alcoholic, the sexual addict becomes controlled by sexual thoughts and desires. Once the addiction becomes entrenched, the individual feels as if he/she cannot break loose. But the power of pornography, sexual fantasies , compulsive masturbation, and other harmful sexual activities can be broken. If you are struggling with a sexual addiction, you must first recognize the problem and make a conscious decision to stop. That may sound overly simple. It is probably something you have struggled to do many times. Yet making that decision is the first step toward claiming your freedom from any habit that controls you. Next, find someone who will help you be accountable. It is important for you to break the power of your fantasies by removing the element of secrecy and forbidden excitement. You need a trusted friend or counselor with whom you can talk and hold nothing back. Make a weekly report on the times and the occasions you pursue your habit. This person's role is not to shame you or to remove your personal responsibility, but to help you develop strength to resist the habit.

Sexual Addiction
Sexual addiction is rapidly becoming recognized as a major social problem with similarities well known to alcohol and drug addiction or compulsive gambling. The sexually addicted individual becomes addicted to the neuro-chemical changes that take place in the body during sexual behaviour, much as a drug addict becomes hooked on the effects of "shooting" heroin. This is not to say that the expression of one as a sexual being, an intensely pleasurable, life-enhancing experience for the majority of the population, is an inherently addictive reality. Contrary to enjoying sex as a self-affirming source of physical pleasure, the sex addict has learned to rely on sex for comfort from pain, for nurturing or relief from stress; this is comparable to the alcoholic's purposeful use of alcohol. The beginnings of sexual addiction are usually rooted in adolescence or childhood. For starters, the child often grows up in a chaotic, hostile or neglectful home. Or, the family may have been very normal otherwise, but the child grows up emotionally starved for love because affection is rarely expressed. The child may turn repeatedly to masturbation to escape the parents' violent arguments, for instance, or to make up for an unconscious lack of attention or affection. Masturbation can be a normal and natural part of childhood, but for the lonely, abused or rejected child can become a regular sedative, much like marijuana, to hide the inner pain. Gradually, sex becomes a replacement for other things, a convenient act to turn to in times of any kind of need, from escaping boredom to feeling anxious, to being able to go to sleep at night.
