So, 1520 years ago, somebody coined another new term semantic pragmatic disorder .It was used to describe those children that were not strictly autistic.
http://www.adhd-biofeedback.com/autism.html
To many clinicians (myself included) autism is the far end of the ADD/ADHD continuum. Many of the same symptoms may occur with autistic kids as with ADD/ADHD kids, and additional symptoms are probable. Again, individuals are different and there is no set of exact autistic symptoms. Like ADD/ADHD, the diagnosis of autism is difficult to distinguish from ADD/ADHD with many differing symptoms common to both. The diagnostic autistism "guidelines" used by psychiatrists and psychologists are mainly for insurance purposes, and can be wildly different between clinicians. There is a test developed by Psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen and his colleagues at Cambridge's Autism Research Centre. It's the Autism-Spectrum Quotient , or AQ, as a measure of the extent of autistim traits in adults. In the first major trial using the test, the average score in the control group was 16.4. Eighty percent of those diagnosed with autism or a related disorder scored 32 or higher. The test is not a good means for making an autistic diagnosis, however, and many who score above 32 and even meet the diagnostic criteria for mild autism or Asperger's report no difficulty functioning in their everyday lives. To use this test go to Autism Test Originally, the term autistic meant that the child could not communicate to others. They were in a world of their own. But, this term wasn't enough, as there were individual variations here as well. Some could communicate, but not well.

Contrary to popular belief most people within the autistic spectrum are high-functioning individuals of average to high intelligence. All have varying levels of difficulty with instinctive social interaction, perfunctory communication and the processing of nonverbal communication, such as gestures and facial expressions, and sensory inputs, such as background noise and bright lights which many find hard to filter out.
The spectrum encompasses a wide range of diagnoses with multiple variables. Collectively they are often called Pervasive Developmental Disorders or PDDs and may be classed as:
  • High Functioning Autism HFA is the traditional diagnosis for individuals with severe social interaction and communication deficits. Although the distinction with AS is blurred and indeed AS is often considered a subset of HFA, people diagnosed with HFA tend to have a much higher Performance IQ (P-IQ) than Verbal IQ (V-IQ). HFAers tend to avoid social contact more, but are less likely to feel embarrassed in social situations, being relatively unconcerned by other people's opinions. Read the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for autism Asperger's Syndrome This is currently the commonest diagnosis for individuals with relatively well-developed language skills but with deficits in instinctive social interaction. AS individuals find it hard to respond to nonverbal signals and social stimuli in the expected way and are often hypersensitive to some shrill sounds, bright lights or textures.

Subject: semantic pragmatic disorder
Message:
Hi my name is Angela Bowling. I have a 5year old son who has semantic pragmatic disorder. This was told to me by an Educational Psychologist who assessed Jordan in June this year. He has not been officially diagnosed by a pediatrician. Although he is doing well in the classroom, Jordan has real difficulty in making friends in the playground. he would like so much to have friends and is aware of not having friends but he seems to try to hard and can’t get it right. It really breaks my heart, i feel so sad for him. Jordan goes to speech therapy and his therapist thinks that Jordan has aspergers. my mind is in turmoil what can i do to help him make friends and to really know has he aspergers or SPD please help.

Message:
Sorry that it has taken time to get a reply- you could try reading a good book called the Language of Social Success by Duke and Nowicki which has ideas that might help. there is also a good CDROM programme out called Mindreader - that you could work through with your son
Ask friends around one to one but for short periods of time and have structured play so that he can have successful social relations
Let me know how you get on
