Speech and Language Therapy
The best person to help a child with language problems is a Speech Therapist. Speech Therapists will usually have a 3-4 year degree with a 2 year post graduate diploma or masters course in the study of Human Communication and specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of all speech and language problems. A Speech Therapist is not only concerned with the development of communication skills in people with language and communication disorders, but they also work to help people with articulation problems and eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties. As a profession they have a very high standard of conduct and regularly self monitor the performance of both themselves and their colleagues. The first task of a Speech Therapist when your child has been referred, (Incidently, referrals are accepted by not only health, education and social services but by parents too.) is to establish exactly what your child can and cannot do. You should refer your child to a Speech Therapist if you feel that your child has not achieved the majority of speaking and listening skills of his peers, if there is a discrepancy between his academic skills, cognitive skills and language and communication skills, and if his development in the areas of communication and language are uneven or not forthcoming. Also if your child is showing signs of stammering or stuttering or has an abnormal sound or oddness to his voice or speech patterns and if he is showing anxiety and frustation due to poor communication skills, it is essential to seek help.

4 people with hidden impairments
Semantic Pragmatic Disorder " Most people in the field of autistic disorders do not consider there is any value in separating semantic-pragmatic disorder from the autistic spectrum. The disadvantage of doing so is the failure to recognize the child's whole pattern of disabilities and therefore a failure to address all their needs. It is also most misleading for the parents. " Lorna wing MD, FRCPsych
I am the mother of a child with Semantic Pragmatic Disorder. I was asked to write this article for the Hi2u website so that people unfamiliar with this disorder can begin to understand what it means to have SPD. My hope is that it also gives teachers and other professionals involved with a child with SPD an insight to what life can be like for the parents and carers too.
What is Semantic Pragmatic Disorder ? Semantic Pragmatic Disorder is language/communication disorder, commonly found in children on the Autistic Spectrum. The disorder's validity as a sub type of developmental language disorder, which is where it was originally defined by Rapin and Allen back in 1983, has been questioned on and off since it's introduction because of the autistic features the children often show. The professional community is slowly extending the boundaries of the spectrum to acknowledge disorders such as SPD and high functioning autism that can blend into the realms of "normality".
Children affected by this disorder have difficulties in the area of the "triad of impairments", typically associated with Autistic Disorders, ie. social interaction, communication and imagination. Their autistic features, however, are mild, but it is important to recognise these when supporting the child.

The clearest and simplest language appropriate
Summary
The WCAG guidelines advise using the clearest and simplest language appropriate. Perhaps this guideline is taken the least seriously from all WCAG , but for some, its lack of implementation can be a true accessibility hazard. Many people require clear and simple language. In this article I want to focus on one disorder where the use of unclear language prevents their participation in many aspects of society. Semantic Pragmatic Disorder (semantic = the relationship between words and their meaning; Pragmatic = making language work in context) or SPD, this is a communication disorder. It is often associated with autism, but is often a disorder on to itself. Non SPD people automatically and unconsciously build memory and knowledge of the connections between words, context and meaning, even for non visual words and non literal senses, like feelings, general sense of time, cues, metaphors, sarcasm. For people with SPD this process is impaired.

    Email Address:
Has anyone heard of this condition?
I have a 2 year 9 month old boy who has a vocabulary of five words, and as far as I can tell no comprehension without visual aids. For example if I ask if he wants a drink there is no response but if I show him a cup he doesn't nod but lets me know he wants it be running at me. He shrieks to get our attention and will shriek instead of using words. He can act out videos having only seen them once, but seemingly has no pretend play or imagination. No hearing problems, phobias or compulsions. Likes his own way or a shrieking fit will follow or a very angry temper tantrum which involves throwing anything close by. Good relations with brothers and sisters and parents, but not with children outside the family. Has been refused speech therapy until he sees an autism specialist which will be in the next four weeks. What little I have read on SPD could this be a possible diagnosis?

she has good eye contact but then sometimes I think you can make them look at you just by constantly saying
"Look at me" I know I`ve done it. She has good self awareness but little awareness of other people
and she calls herself "Me" but her obseive traits apparently on serve enough for an autistic diagnosis.
Although I think when we were looking for this we used the wrong obession. It should have been
penguins and the colour blue. She speaks extremely well.
But she is extremely anxious and scared and stays in the house mostly.
    any suggestions.
