Prevent youth violence, self-injury and suicide From the July-August 1999 issue of "Seeds for the Parish" Part two of a series called "Nurture faith through life transitions." Our communities have come face to face with the tragedy of youth violence. School shootings like the massacre in Littleton, CO, gang activities, hate crimes and statistics that affirm the reality youth suicide and self-injury are leading society to examine its role in shaping and confronting youth violence toward themselves and others. Yet it is our church that is uniquely equipped to reach the heart of human needs that can result in violence. Anger is the primary emotion that manages experiences that challenge our perspectives, dreams or ideals. Like a flashing yellow light, anger prompts us to identify the conflict and find an appropriate resolution. Without effective coping skills and reality checks, anger will remain, covering the pain of insecurity, alienation, disillusionment, disregard or ongoing conflict. When anger is left unresolved, it intensifies and may be projected inward or outward to find an expression beyond reason. How can your congregation help?

171. How And Why I Stopped Self-Harming
A life story on stopping selfinjury, understanding and overcoming problems.
http://home.golden.net/~soul/myaccnt.html
How and Why I Stopped Self-Harming
Firstly, I began to cut as a means of soothing my aggravated feelings for which there was no connected feeling and virtually no conscious understanding for years. I began to cut around the age of 17, when I left home and was in College. I was living in a dorm and was extemely stressed and unable to cope with all of the people I lived in close quarters with. I cut, usually with razor blades and there were times where I would break glass and basically gouge myself with it. Many times the latter efforts required stitches. When I would cut I would be so stressed, so aggitated, and feel so overwhelmed and helpless, though for years the only "feeling" I could identify was ANGER, I knew I was angry and that I was very aggitated. I didn't know that I was as detached from my feelings and indeed myself as it turns out I now know I was. I was not able to cry. I was not particularily into journalling. I would not talk to people about my problems. If I was forced to talk to anyone I would lie about stuff. Half the time I wasn't sure what was real and what wasn't. I had no idea how to be personally responsible for myself, my feelings, my pain or how to meet any of my own needs. I used people and I hurt people and I hurt myself. When I would cut, I would feel relieved, and when the blood was flowing it was like my pain was being released, it was like it was the way my body 'cried'. I often cut in situations that it would then be possible for me to get attention from others around me in. This I have come to know was my need to be nurtured. It was also about my need to control others and my environment when I was so out of control myself. I did not even know that what I was choosing to do in cutting was a) a choice and b) a result of my feeling vulnerable and out of control.

red tears
Welcome to my little corner of the world. I wanted to create a page to share my thoughts/feelings and experiences as a self injurer with others, both other self injurers and people who are looking to learn more about and understand people who self injure. This is my first attepmt at a web page so please be patient and bear with me. I plan to add more SI links in the near future, there are some really wonderful sites out there. The icon next to the link to my journal will change each time I write an entry (I get tired of the little updated icon and I don't get the chance to write regularly).
Still more time has passed. Only writing because I was here to add a link anyway and thought that I should update a little. I don't think this site will ever get updated the way I was intending due to lack of time from having a 1 year old to chase after and the fact that working on it tends to put me in a triggery state. Perhaps someday I will eventually get this all nice and current in a totally different incarnation. We shall see. Only real update is to say that I made it through my mom's passing without cutting only because there is something seriously wrong in my head. But that is a whole other can of worms. Which you can check out some of it in my LiveJournal at http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=silentredtears. Hopefully someone might get something somewhat useful here in it's limbo state. Current e-mail address is still sifdis@hotmail.com.

Welcome to my little hellhole. This page has my lyrics, poetry, writings, and story of my fight with self-injury. Enjoy! Or if you don't, then get out, I don't care, and don't come back. :-P
***Warning***
If you know me offline, be warned before entering this page. I bare ALL here and hide nothing. If you think you can take it, go ahead, but don't say I didn't tell you so. I don't think any of my rl friends would want to see the things I have here. ALSO some of the content of my page is potentially triggering for those who self injure. In addition to that, don't enter if you're easily offended by swearing or similar stuff. That's it, be warned.

Suicide is a scary word, but here's what you should know about it. Most people who are clinically depressed do not commit suicide, but they are more at risk for it. You may have heard people say things like, "Someone who talks about killing himself or herself will never actually do it." This is important: thinking about, talking

Suicide and Self-Injury From the Mentors about, or trying suicide is ALWAYS SERIOUS. If you or a friend is doing any of these, talk to a trusted adult IMMEDIATELY. If you're worried that someone close to you may be thinking about suicide, watch for these warning signs:
  • Talking, reading, or writing about suicide or death.
  • Talking about feeling worthless or helpless.
  • Saying things like, "I'm going to kill myself," "I wish I were dead," or "I shouldn't have been born."
