142. Self-assessment Of Self-injury Urges

Assessing your immediate need to self-injure
These questions, written by Kharre, can help you assess what's going on with you right now. By answering them, you can be sure you've done your best not to self-injure. As Kharre says,
The questions differ a little bit every time, but I will not cut if I cannot answer them. [...] The most important questions on the list are #'s 4 to 6. In the beginning I would give myself little half-assed answers, but as each month passed my answers to myself became more detailed and I began to learn things about myself. I also found out that I can lessen or avoid stress, rather than running blindly into it. It also used to be that #8's answer was always 'yes', but now it is way more often a 'no'. What this exercise is doing is helping me learn how to identify my emotions and stressors, which is a very important part for me, because those are the things that drive me to SI. To make answering the questions easier, I've created a form for you to answer them in. Bookmark this page and come back here when the urge to harm yourself is strong. To use this form, enter the address you want your answers sent to, type in the answers, and press submit. A mail message with your answers will be sent to the address you specify. You are the only person who will see this message; it will not be sent to me.

147. Error Due To Perspective - Self-Injury

SI is an issue that is very close to my heart. I have evolved into this condition of being "out" about cutting - although I have not self-injured in a very long time, I have decided not to waste any more time or energy hiding anymore. As self-injury is still taboo, very few pages address the public experience of being a cutter. From that, what follows are just my explanations for those who aren't, some comfort for those who are, and some suggestions of my own on how to cope, both as a cutter and a friend of, or as a family member to a cutter. Lately, I've seen alot of really cheesey pages on self-injury that don't offer the reader much else besides uninvolved speculation, regurgitated information (unhindered by credit to where it came from), and stereotypes of cutters. Other pages set out to make cutters look like world vision commercials - stranded helpless self-victims who need a pat on the back and your help. Unhappy teenagers buying into a new trend, the neo-braincandy of X Generational depression. Marilyn Manson fandom taken the same way as wearing tartan for the Bay City Rollers. I decided to make a page so that if somebody tries to find it, another viewpoint on self-injury can be found.
Firstly, For the Non-Cutters

November 9, 2002 Since you ask, most days I cannot remember.
I walk in my clothing, unmarked by that voyage.
Then the almost unnamable lust returns.
Anne Sexton If you cause physical harm to your body in order to deal with overwhelming feelings, know that you have nothing to be ashamed of. It's likely that you're keeping yourself alive and maintaining psychological integrity with the only tool you have right now. It's a crude and ultimately self-destructive tool, but it works; you get relief from the overwhelming pain/fear/anxiety in your life. The prospect of giving it up may be unthinkable, which makes sense; you may not realize that self-harm isn't the only or even best coping method around. For many people who self-injure, though, there comes a breakthrough moment when they realize that change is possible, that they can escape, that things can be different. They begin to believe that other tools do exist and begin figuring out which of these non-self-destructive ways of coping work for them. This site exists to help you come closer to that moment.

151. Myths About Self-Injury
eMail Us. self-injury is a failed suicide attempt. There is a risk thatself-injury may also result in an unintentional suicide by accident.
http://www.teenhealthcentre.com/teens/mentalhealth/selfinjury/sel01.htm
Self-injury is a failed suicide attempt.
False
, self-injury is often a way to continue living and cope with whatever is going on in their life without having to attempt suicide. This does not mean that all cuts to the wrist are not suicide attempts, but most people who self-injure know exactly how deep they can cut before they risk dying. There is a risk that self-injury may also result in an unintentional suicide by accident. Also, this does not mean that self-injury never triggers feelings of suicide and many self-abusers feel very suicidal at times and may have made attempt in the past. Just because it is not a form of suicide doesn’t make it any less serious or less dangerous a choice.
Self-injury is “attention seeking” behaviour.
OK, now think about this one, aren’t there better ways to get attention? One could dye their hair blue or walk around naked! Self-injury is a coping strategy and usually one that involves covering it up, not showing it off. Self-injury is a sign of distress. Self-injury is untreatable. It’s hopeless.

self-injury : updated scar healing "recipe"
there are several ways to heal your scars faster if you want to/need to. i've gathered this info from various sources ... first aid pamphlets, people who SI, and also the "body modification" sites that advocate scarification (i.e., how to make a scar more visible, how to heal it when you don't want it any more). please email me if any other way has worked for you!!
  • do first aid ... do NOT go ahead with anything else until you have done first aid!! after cleansing the wound, apply Bacitracin cream (bacitracin zinc 500 units) ... any generic "triple antibiotic creme" will do. hydrocortisone won't heal scars, it just soothes the pain/itch. Bactine will cleanse a wound, but does not contribute to scar healing. hydrogen peroxide actually raises scars (if you want that sort of thing, apply hydrogen peroxide, then scrub with an old, soft toothbrush, every day until healed). rubbing alcohol will sterilize a wound, and doesn't affect scarring either way, but it will dry your skin (as will hydrogen peroxide) making healing a bit slower.
  • after first aid, wound closure, and non-infected healing: start applying Vitamin E oil bottled, not from the capsules GNC and other vitamin stores sell it in 28,000 IU bottles for about $8. (it has to be 15,000 IU's or over to be truly effective.) apply and massage 3 or more times a day, massage it in really well. don't bother with vitamin E until your wound is no longer infected, or if it's still open.

How you can help Understanding Self-Injury: A Workbook For Adults
By Kristy Trautmann, B.S. and Robin Connors, Ph.D.
Self-injury has remained one of the most hidden aspects of many survivors' lives and one of the least understood effects of trauma. This unique workbook for people who deliberately hurt themselves provides information and elicits self-exploration through focused writing and drawing exercises. Choice and pacing are encouraged, making it accessible to people with varying needs and resources. The authors, who work with trauma survivors and train the professionals who treat them, believe that there is a strong connection between self-injury and childhood trauma. Understanding Self-Injury contains chapters which allow survivors to explore connections between self-injury and childhood trauma, and self-injury and dissociation. Survivors will learn alternatives to self-injury, including techniques to help manage troubling feelings. Designed as a self-help resource, Understanding Self-Injury can be used alone, without a therapeutic program or relationship. The workbook can also serve as an adjunct to outpatient work, and may help professionals and support people to better understand the experience of people who self-injure.
