Selective Mutism: Break The Silence
Early Diagnosis Key To Curing Illness
POSTED: 12:27 p.m. PDT April 30, 2002
UPDATED: 12:33 p.m. PDT April 30, 2002
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. Selective mutism is an often misdiagnosed childhood anxiety disorder that, if left untreated, can lead to bigger behavioral problems down the road, KERO 23 reported. Gina Mallon first noticed the quiet change in her daughter Emily back in kindergarten. "She would get very upset if she thought someone heard her voice," Mallon said. Doctors told Mallon her daughter was shy, and she would outgrow it. But when Emily's grades dropped because she wouldn't speak in class, her parents knew better. Emily was finally diagnosed as selectively mute. She can't speak in school because anxiety overwhelms her. "Kids suffering from selective mutism will tell you that they're scared, they don't know why, their words are stuck, their body won't let them get the words out," psychologist Elisa Shipon-Blum said.

MENTAL HEALTH - Research The Sounds of Silence: Anxiety, Language, and Cognition in Selective Mutism
    Background
Contact Information Procedure Learn More About Depression ... Eligibility BACKGROUND: Children with selective mutism are able to speak, but will not speak at all (i.e. will be mute) in some situations (e.g. at school). Studies have suggested that children with selective mutism may be nervous and self-conscious. There have also been reports that these children may have learning and language difficulties as well. However, systematic studies into the speech, language, and learning abilities in these children have not been done. We hope to study this area in detail. We are currently recruiting subjects to participate in a study designed to research the speech, language and learning abilities in children with selective mutism. In order to do this research, we would like to study a group of children with selective mutism, and compare them to children who have generalized anxiety disorder or social phobia, and to children who do not have selective mutism or an anxiety disorder. PROCEDURE: Participation in the study would involve 2 steps: ELIGIBILITY: Individuals may be eligible for this study if they:
    • Have (or suspect they have) one of the following:
      • A diagnosis of Selective Mutism (duration of at least 3 months)
      • A diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder
      • A diagnosis of Social Phobia

My son is 10 years old. He "suffers" from selective mutism since he was 5. We went to some psychologists but they weren't useful. He talks only with us and with my parents. He is a very clever boy,and has a lot of friends, with whom he's playing- without words... I'd like to get an advice of treatment. thanks

selective mutism You have included no details of the selective mutism such as traumas which may have contributed to the development of this phenomenon in your son. My guess is that there was some sort of event or change in your son's life that contributed to his choosing this way to handle some overwhelming experience. I have treated only one case of selective mutism with a 9 year old girl which began after her parents divorce. Sandplay and the cotransference helped clear up both the mutism and the phobias which plagued this child. She is now a delightful attractive teenager. I would recommend that you bring your son to a qualified child therapist who uses non-verbal methods such as sandplay, art, clay, etc. Tessamarie Capitolo, San Rafael, CA

Is the evaluation current? You should get some ino there. If not, check with the child's current or former teacher for current level of performance. If it were me, I would write goals and objectives in the Social domain, focusing on the child's specific areas of need. 2 . "selective mutism goals"

Perhaps goals can start out as simple as: will verbally respond appropriately to a verbal greeting each morning. (Will say "good morning" when greeted like wise, or respond to "How are you today?")

Posts: 5 Selective Mutism I just wanted to inform parents and professionals about "Selective Mutism". It is an extreme form of speech anxiety in children. They talk normally at home but are completely mute in social situations or school. Few professionals are aware of this disorder so children suffer in silence. Posts: 12 i kind of know what that is. it's deeper than just a child being quiet. it's one thing when your child doesn't talk at school for the first few days or so because they might need to warm up to everything- that's not something to be concern about. but if they teacher(s) tell you a few months or so later that your child never talks or makes much sounds at school but you know they can, then something needs to be found out. it's trauma related usually. how do you break through it? like older kids could probably write about what's wrong but if they can't write yet or very well, then what?
