Seborrheic Dermatitis (Severe Dandruff) I. Definition: Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic, recurring scaly rash involving the face, ears, eyebrows, scalp, and sometimes the chest. It occurs more frequently as people get older. There is no cure for this condition. II. Causes:
  • A yeast named Malassezia ovalis that grows on the skin causes seborrheic dermatitis. People prone to seborrheic dermatitis are usually genetically susceptible to this condition. Seborrheic dermatitis is usually worse in the colder months.
III. Treatment:
  • Treatment is a matter of control rather than cure. Seborrheic dermatitis usually responds to topical therapy. The treatment depends on its site as well as its severity. Sebulex Shampoo , which can be purchased without a prescription, should be used every other day to wash the scalp. The more often you shampoo the less likely you are to have this problem. Other good shampoos are Head and Shoulders and Selsun Blue Shampoos that contain conditioners can make one more prone to this condition. If you use a shampoo with conditioner alternate it with one that has no conditioner. Hair pomade can contribute to this problem. The use of Sebizon Lotion with your favorite pomade is an effective treatment for this problem.

Definition
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory disease of the skin characterized by scaly lesions usually on the scalp, hairline, and face. Description Seborrheic dermatitis appears as red, inflamed skin covered by greasy or dry scales that may be white, yellowish, or gray. It can effect the scalp, eyebrows, forehead, face, folds around the nose and ears, the chest, armpits (axilla), and groin. Dandruff and cradle cap are mild forms of seborrheic dermatitis, and appear as fine white scales without inflammation. Causes and symptoms The cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unclear, though it is has been linked to genetic or environmental factors. Pityrosporum ovale , a species of yeast normally found in hair follicles, has been proposed as one possible causative factor. A high fat diet and alcohol ingestion are thought to play some role. Other possible risk factors include:
  • stress and fatigue
  • weather extremes (e. g. hot, humid weather or cold, dry weather)
  • oily skin
  • infrequent shampoos
  • obesity
  • Parkinson's disease
  • AIDS
  • use of drying lotions that contain alcohol
  • other skin disorders (for example acne rosacea , or psoriasis)
Mild forms of the disorder may be asymptomatic. Symptoms also disappear and reappear, and vary in intensity over time. When scaling is present, it may be accompanied by

seborrheic dermatitis Home Forums Privacy Advertising ... Home On this page... Seborrheic dermatitis Seborrheic dermatitis has several different names and differences in spelling. While seborrheic is the common US spelling, in Europe an "o" may be added to make "seborrhoeic" dermatitis. Seborrheic eczema, seborrhea oleosa, and pityriasis capitis are other names for the same condition. Diagnosis of this condition is generally straightforward, but the differential diagnosis includes a variety of conditions, such as psoriasis vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, tinea capitis and candidiasis, as well as other, more rare conditions. The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is not known but there is probably a genetic component involved. The prevalence of seborrheic dermatitis changes in different locations and communities around the world. The most susceptible ethnic group are Caucasians and people of Celtic descent in particular. People with Parkinson's disease are also very susceptible to seborrheic dermatitis. People with Parkinson's disease produce very high levels of of sebum. This can be partly improved by patients taking L-dopa supplements.

Abstract
Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects seborrheic areas of skin. An inflammatory response to the yeast Pityrosporum ovale has been thought to be important in the etiology of the condition. Therefore, topical antifungals and corticosteroids have been the mainstay of treatment. The recent development of topical macrolactam immunomodulators has offered a useful, safe alternative to corticosteroids in the treatment of various inflammatory skin disorders. We report successful treatment of seborrheic dermatitis with pimecrolimus.
Case report
Figure 1 Figure 2 Scattered scaly patches on forehead, nasal bridge, and scalp line (Fig. 1). One month followup showing complete clearance (Fig. 2). An 18-year-old woman with no significant past medical history presented with a 1-year history of asymptomatic lesions on her face. On physical examination, there were scattered, scaly patches on her forehead, nasal bridge, and scalp line (Fig. 1). She had been treated with ketoconazole cream, ketoconazole 2% shampoo, and hydrocortisone 1 % cream without improvement. A skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of seborrheic dermatitis. The patient was prescribed pimecrolimus cream twice daily. On followup at 1 month the eruption had completely cleared (Fig. 2).

(Dandruff)
by Jennifer Hellwig, MS, RD
Definition
Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition that causes a scaly, itchy rash. It can appear as a mild, white scaling or a yellowish or reddish scaly rash. Most commonly affected areas are along the hairline, in and behind the ears, and on the eyebrows, nose, and chest. Dandruff is a type of seborrheic dermatitis. It is the scaling of the skin on the scalp. It can be dry or oily and sometimes itchy. Seborrheic dermatitis involves swelling and redness of the underlying skin (inflammation), while dandruff is just a mild, white scaling of the scalp (no inflammation).
Causes
The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown, though common skin yeast organisms called Malassezia may play a role in some persons. Seborrheic dermatitis seems to run in families and to affect people with oily skin or hair. It may also be associated with other chronic conditions, such as disorders of the immune system and of the nervous system.
Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition. In this case, your risk factors are:

Cradle Cap / Seborrheic Dermatitis
Back to Top General Cradle Cap / Seborrheic Dermatitis Information Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis, is a noninfectious skin condition resulting in patchy, oily scales and crusts that appears on the scalp of newborns and infants. Seborrhoeic dermatitis can also appear in the skin folds of the neck, behind the ears, in the armpits and on the diaper area. Cradle cap usually begins in the first few weeks of life and slowly disappears over period of weeks or months. Cradle cap is rarely painful, itchy or uncomfortable, and most babies are unaware of the condition. Back to Top Possible Causes of Cradle Cap / Seborrheic Dermatitis The exact cause of cradle cap is unknown, but it is thought that the condition stems from overactive sebaceous glands in the skin of newborns. Hormones from the mother that cross the placenta and enter the baby’s system are also thought to cause cradle cap. Skin yeasts may also be involved. Cradle cap is not the result of poor hygiene, allergy or infection.

In Seborrheic Dermatitis, the skin is red, with greasy scales due to overly oily skin. It is common and affects teenagers and adults. The most annoying thing about Seborrheic Dermatitis is that it comes and goes.
How does Seborrheic Dermatitis look like? It may range from dandruff in which there are itchy, white scales on the scalp. More severe red, scaly itchy patches behind the ears, in the external ear canals, around the neck, chest and back. Areas affected are those with the highest concentration of oil glands: including scalp, face, neck, armpits, body and groin.
What is the treatment? Although there is no known cure for Seborrheic Dermatitis, much can be done to alleviate the discomfort. Avoid scratching and rubbing the skin as this may cause infection. Avoid oily cosmetics.
