82. Falconer (1815): Scurvy
scurvy. scurvy, (scorbul, Fr.) a wellknown disease to which seamenare peculiarly exposed, from being necessitated to eat salted

Scurvy
SCURVY, ( scorbul This disease was formerly very prevalent among seamen, but now little known in the British navy, from the improvements in medicine, the great attention of our medical officers, and the wholesome regulations introduced by the naval officers in our ships war. A proposition has been submitted to the French government by Citizen Rivoire, of the marine, to contribute to the health of their seamen, by diminishing the quantity of salted meats used at sea, and rescuing the men in a certain degree from the ravages of the scurvy. The government had so far given sanction to the plan, which the inventor asserts to be tried efficacy, as to insert it in the official paper, the Redacteur , of the 10th of August, 1799. "Salted meats," says Citizen Rivoire, "form the general food of persons at sea, and, however carefully they may be prepared, the use of them is at all times pernicious. When vessels are a long time at sea without putting into any port, the scurvy is found to rage among the crews, and in a manner the more dangerous, as the means of cure are slow and uncertain. The following is the, process which Citizen Rivoire employed, which he says is the result of many experiments, with which he had every reason to be satisfied: "It will be necessary in the naval slaughter-houses, to select the most fleshy parts; the four quarters, for instance, of the beeves which are killed for their daily consumption, which of course must then be doubled. The muscles being cleared of the surrounding fat, are to be cut in large slices perpendicularly, according to the direction of the fibres. These slices are to be exposed to the heat of the ovens in which the bread and biscuit are baked for the use of the navy, when they are at the heat of fifty degrees by the thermometer of Reaumur, and to remain there until the ovens be cold: and opening should be left for the evaporation of the moisture.

Welcome to the Program Stories and Interviews Frontierwatch Ask an Antarctican ... About Big Dead Place Scurvy Awareness Program "...after eating a hearty breakfast of salt beef, I found myself taken with a pain under my left breast, where I had formerly received a dangerous blow. From this time the sea scurvy increased upon me..." -William Hutchinson, 1794 At recent Employee Orientations, Raytheon Human Resources representatives made the startling boast that in 2002, reported employee injuries in Antarctica reached an all-time low. Even a graph was flaunted to show that in 2001 a line representing worker injuries moved downward upon the arrival of the x-axis notch marking the 2002 fiscal year. What the Human Resources representatives overlooked in order to maintain their encouraging numbers was that 2002 was the year Raytheon, with the oversight of the National Science Foundation, paid employees not to report injuries. During the winter of 2002, each employee was paid an extra $50 for each month that their department reported no injuries. In the minds of number-crunchers with ergonomic office chairs, the $50 was an incentive to encourage safe work habits. But to bloody-knuckled grunts with work-sprained wrists or smashed fingers, seeking medical treatment now came with the added bonus of owing co-workers their money’s worth in cases of beer, to ward off the murderous stares. A mob of mechanics deprived of their rightful dough is not an enemy to be aggravated for need of a band-aid. Do cash incentives create a safer industrial environment? Or do they merely pit the hungry herd against the injured gazelle? Do cash incentives breed careful workers? Or do they breed a ruthless corps of opponents eager for new fishing rods? Do injuries decrease as reported injuries decrease? Or do dollars quietly bury the blood?

    Scurvy
    Definition
Scurvy is a condition caused by a lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the diet. Signs of scurvy include tiredness, muscle weakness, joint and muscle aches, a rash on the legs, and bleeding gums. In the past, scurvy was common among sailors and other people deprived of fresh fruits and vegetables for long periods of time.
    Description
Scurvy is very rare in countries where fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available and where processed foods have vitamin C added. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant vitamin involved in the development of connective tissues, lipid and vitamin metabolism, biosynthesis of neurotransmitters, immune function, and wound healing. It is found in fruits, especially citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruit, and in green leafy vegetables like broccoli and spinach. In adults, it may take several months of vitamin C deficiency before symptoms of scurvy develop. Currently, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin C is 50-60 mg/day for adults; 35 mg/day for infants; 40-45 mg/day for children 1-14; 70 mg/day during

    PROGRESS ANNOUNCED IN SCURVY RESEARCH
    "Cure just around the corner"
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Scientists from the National Scurvy Institute (NSI) recently convened a 5 day seminar to assess progress in the War on Scurvy. The future looks bright and a cure is just around the corner announced a spokesman at the seminar. Over the past 30 years NSI, NIH (National Institute of Health) and ASS (American Scurvy Society) have spent over $30 billion on scurvy research. Pharmaceutical companies have over 80 new drugs in development to combat scurvy according to the FDA. The 5 year survival rate after diagnosis of scurvy is over 50% up from 30% just 20 years ago although 500,000 Americans continue to die of the disease each year. President Clinton has proposed a 10% increase in NSI's budget for fiscal year 1999. NSI kicked off its annual "Race for the Cure" campaign to raise additional funds for research last month. Risk factors for scurvy include cigarette smoking, diets high in saturated fat and long ocean voyages. Sailors are particularly at risk for the disease. A researcher at the University of Washington has speculated that there may be a substance in sea water that triggers the disease. Of course much more research is needed. Researchers at the University of Maryland, working on the human genome project, have identified a "Scurvy gene" From this it may be possible to develop a test to identify individuals at risk for the disease.

SUDDEN DEATH IN INFANTS WITH SCURVY
    RICHARD H. FOLLIS, JR., M.D.
    BALTIMORE, MD.
From the Departments of Pathology and Pediatrics, the Johns Hopkins Medical School.
WE HAVE recently had an opportunity to review the clinical histories and pathologic findings in a group of children dying with varying degrees of scurvy. In three of these infants death came suddenly and quite unexpectedly. At autopsy all showed bone changes indicative of severe vitamin C deficiency; two had hypertrophy of the right ventricle of the heart. In each patient careful gross and microscopic examinations failed to reveal any other cause for death. It is to draw attention again to the role vitamin C deficiency may play in leading to cardiac insufficiency that the following cases are being recorded.
    CASE REPORTS
At autopsy (No. 16331) the following positive findings were noted. The body weighed 6 kg. The heart was obviously enlarged, weighing 65 Gm. This increase in size was due to hypertrophy of the right ventricle. All the valves were delicate and competent. The foramen ovale and ductus arteriosus were closed. The left ventricle did not seem enlarged. The myocardium of both ventricles was pale. The lungs contained fluid. The liver was yellowish. The line of ossification of the ribs was distinctly widened; the cartilage was movable on the shaft and the periosteum stripped from the cortex with a fair amount of ease. The meninges were delicate, and there was no evidence of hemorrhage.

The Case History of a Misleading
    Dietary Hypothesis.
    Irwin Stone. PC-A
1 1321 Charmwood Square, San Jose, California 95117
This paper was originally prepared for presentation at the Conference On controversies In Human And Clinical Nutrition, Boston University School of Medicine, Hyannis, Massachusetts. July 16, 1978 and also presented at the Annual Meeting of the Orthomolecular Medical Society, September 17, 1978, San Diego, California. This paper will discuss the history of scurvy in this country over the past eight decades and try to explain how a potentially-fatal and insidious genetic disease of such wide incidence in our population could become an unrecognized, phantom disease, to which most present day doctors pay little or no attention and are unconcerned. It will also discuss the widely accepted dietary theory which has been applied by nutritionists attempting to solve this problem in medical genetics. The author believes that the wide acceptance of this misleading dietary hypothesis is the source of the medical complacency and apathy and the dangerous continuing high incidence of Chronic Subclinical Scurvy.
    [The History of Scurvy]
Let us take a look at the sequence of historical events in scurvy of the past 80 years and try to see what went wrong and what finally went right: The first notable date in this century is 1907 which records the first important scientific advance in our knowledge of scurvy beyond what was known to Dr. Lind in 1753. Holst and Frohlich (1907) stumbled accidentally upon this important evidence while they were investigating ship beriberi which was causing problems in the Norwegian Fishing Fleet.

Excite's Patrick Holland makes good on an earlier promise : if Ashton Kutcher's upcoming film My Boss' Daughter grosses $40 million or more in a month, he'll eat nothing but baked beans for a month. The rules are in place: "Rule #2 - No condiment shall accompany the baked beans, save CATSUP. I'm still not quite sure what the difference is between catsup and ketchup, only that catsup doesn't taste as good and might possibly cause SARS.
Penalty: For any other condiment that I consume - and yes, that includes marshmallow fluff - I must Tivo an episode of "That 70s Show" and watch it every night for a week. The mute button may NOT be used at any time." We wish Mr. Holland best of luck... but we don't think he'll need it. That turkey's a turkey.

I just had two of my wisdom teeth removed, since I have a freakish amount of nerves in there it took 12 needles and gas to get my teeth to come out. In the process the dentist cracked one of the teeth near my wisdom tooth and that had to be filled, something tells me there could be an easier way to do this. When a person doesn't recieve enough Vitamin C they there bodies cant produce collagen effectively and it causes gum tissues to become weak and loosens your teeth. If we had some chemical that could break down collagen it could be injected into the gums where the tooth is to be pulled it could be used as an instant, localised, gum relaxer allowing the dentist to gently wiggle the too out without too much work and then send you away with a few Tylenols and a bottle of vitamin C. bobofthefuture , Jul 18 2003 link I'll think I'll be taking two aspirins and *not* calling you in the morning...
