B-Spline Curve Visualization
by Apostolos Lerios
scurvy is a simple program that allows the user to visualize and manipulate B-spline curves in space. It was written as a teaching aid for Stanford's 1995 course in modeling in computer graphics (CS 348C) The provided executable executes only on Silicon Graphics workstations equipped with the execution-only-environment (eoe) of Open Inventor (the development environment is not required). For those interested in porting scurvy to other platforms, the source code is also available in tar archive format; use tar xf scurvy.tar to unpack the archive. This source code was developed on a Silicon Graphics workstation equipped with the Open Inventor development environment. A Linux port bleffler@kth.se We provide no support for scurvy
Basic interaction
A typical screen of scurvy shows a B-spline curve. The curve is drawn in two colors, cyan and orange: these two colors alternate between adjacent spline segments. Each spline segment is drawn by approximating the shape of the ideal curve by as many line segments as specified by the "Pieces" slider. The colored spheres mark the de Boor points of the curve. The color of the spheres indicates the order of the de Boor points: the first point is blue, and the last is red, while intermediate ones have colors in-between blue and red. The white polyline connecting the spheres is the control polygon of the curve; along with the spheres' coloring, it identifies the ordering of the de Boor points.

SACRUM
The sacrum is the portion of the vertebral column between the lumbar vertebrae and the structures of the coccyx . It is composed of five vertebrae which are fused together to form a single bone structure. The sacrum features a median crest which is made of the fused spinous processes of its component vertebrae. Beneath this crest is the sacral canal , a tunnel which runs lengthwise from the top of the sacrum to a hiatus (opening) near the bottom. Four pairs of sacral foramina pierce the sacrum, flanking the medial line, where the intermediate sacral crests are formed by the fused articular processes of the component vertebrae. To the outside of the intermediate sacral crests are the lateral crests, formed by the fused transverse processes of the component vertebrae. In the sacrum, therefore, unlike the upper vertebrae in the spine , the intertransverse ligaments have been replaced by fusion of these processes together. The crests are not represented on the pelvic surface of the sacrum, though the sacral foramina are evident.

Example: [Dale, 1984]
A man at Aberdeen University spent his entire student grant within a fortnight. In order to keep himself alive for the rest of the term he cooked as much porridge as he could, lined a chest of drawers with greaseproof paper and poured in the porridge to set. Every time he needed a meal he would cut off a chunk, fry it, and eat it. He found this spend-then-diet routine most satisfactory and repeated it term after term. At the end of his third year he was admitted to hospital as Aberdeen's first recorded case of scurvy in 120 years.
Origins: This story has been part of the campus lore canon since at least the mid-1970s. It appears to be more common in Great Britain than it does in North America, but Canadian and American tellings of it have been recorded.
Scurvy is a disease that strikes down those who are deficient in vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid). This illness is relatively well contained in modern times, but in centuries past it took many a life. Its worst ravages were noted among sailors whose long sea voyages kept them from having fruits and vegetables. (Vasco da Gama, for example, lost more than half his crew to this malady on his first trip around the Cape of Good Hope in 1497.) In 1747 lemons and oranges were fed to scurvy-riddled sailors with dramatic results, and in 1795 the British navy began doling out regular rations of lime juice during long sea forays (hence the slang term 'limeys' for British sailors), a practice that was highly successful in preventing the disease.

The old story
The old story of the conquest of scurvy in the British Navy has been a long time dying. The story runs as follows. In 1753, James Lind published his Treatise of the scurvy. At the heart of his book is the record of his clinical trial of a number of potential cures for the disease. Oranges and lemons came out as the conclusive winners. However, the Admiralty procrastinated for over forty years before accepting Lind’s findings. Not until 1795 was lemon juice issued to sailors. At once, scurvy was banished from the fleet. A number of historians of naval medicine, notably Coulter, Keevil, Lloyd and Carpenter, have shown up deficiencies in this story. They have shown that the simple tale of a heroic, pioneering Lind and the dilatory Lords of the Admiralty will not do. In their more complex accounts of scurvy and its treatments during the second half of the eighteenth century, Lind no longer stars as the single, decisive character in the story. He appears as just one - albeit an important one - of a number of eighteenth century contributors to the debate about the mysterious disease of scurvy.

Ever wonder what it was like to serve on a WWII era destroyer, that was FRAM'd (Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization program) in the 60's to meet the challenges of the Cold War period in our nations history?
This area of the web site is dedicated to a group of writers who served on FRAM ships that carried Gyrodyne's DASH weapon system (as seen above on the USS VOGELGESANG (DD-862)), yet these stories are not of DASH, but of interesting events that happened to these Sailors while serving in the United States Navy and of the complexities of NAVY LIFE. This group of sailors, who call themselves the Secret Scurvy Dogs Society (SSDS) , have been an incredible resource to the Gyrodyne Helicopter Historical Foundation (GHHF) in performing research of the FRAM destroyers which carried Gyrodyne's QH-50 series Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter (DASH) , but also in providing a sailors perspective of where DASH succeeded and where it failed.
If not for the continued oversight ( weekly if not daily ) of the SSDS concerning Gyrodyne's continuing archive recovery and many questions relating to them, the GHHF web site would not be as complete and accurate as it is.

Scurvy
Scurvy is a disease that results from insufficient intake of vitamin C and leads to the formation of livid spots on the skin, spongy gums and bleeding from almost all mucous membranes. The spots are most abundant on the thighs and legs, and a person with the ailment looks pale, feels depressed, and is partially immobilized. Scurvy was at one time common among sailors whose ships were out to sea longer than perishable fruits and vegetables could be stored and by soldiers who were similarly separated from these foods for extended periods. Symptoms include:
  • weakness joint pain black-and-blue marks on the skin gum disease corkscrew hairs
It takes about three months of vitamin C deprivation to begin inducing the symptoms of scurvy. Untreated scurvy is always fatal, but since all that is required for full recovery is the resumption of normal vitamin C intake, death by scurvy is rare in modern times. Scurvy was probably first observed as a disease by Hippocrates . In the 13th century the Crusaders suffered from scurvy frequently, and it has inflicted terrible losses on both besieged and besieger in times of war. Scurvy was one of the limiting factors of marine travel, often killing large numbers of the passengers and crew on long-distance voyages. It even played a significant role in

    ABSTRACT
A method of utilizing vitamin C in amounts just short of the doses which produce diarrhea is described (TITRATING TO BOWEL TOLERANCE). The amount of oral ascorbic acid tolerated by a patient without producing diarrhea increases somewhat proportionately to the stress or toxicity of his disease. Bowel tolerance doses of ascorbic acid ameliorate the acute symptoms of many diseases. Lesser doses often have little effect on acute symptoms but assist the body in handling the stress of disease and may reduce the morbidity of the disease. However, if doses of ascorbate are not provided to satisfy this potential draw on the nutrient, first local tissues involved in the disease, then the blood, and then the body in general become deplete of ascorbate (ANASCORBEMIA and ACUTE INDUCED SCURVY). The patient is thereby put at risk for complications of metabolic processes known to be dependent upon ascorbate.

    No festivities this weekend
Well, my plan of having some sort of cookout will be cancelled for the weekend. It would seem that my grill and there area around it has been totally overrun with Cicadas. Guess they're pissed about the Cicadastetler thing.
The house was a disaster when I finally was able to return yesterday evening. I spent pretty much all evening cleaning up and making the place livable again. This morning the power was out at the 'office' so I've been home all day covering email which has offered a nice opportunity to continue getting everything back in order. Now golf is on TV and I've been to the store. The reaminder of the day will be spent on roast beef and the couch.
