plasticsturgeon So, the other day I was flipping channels, and I came to an episode of what is apparently a show about the Rugrats when they're a little older and in school. They're in science class, and they're trying to make grapefruit batteries. Now, one might think that this was an endorsement of the C. But no. First of all, portraying a citrus fruit as a battery pretty much renders it psychologically unsuitable as a food. After all, who wants to eat a battery?
Second, one of the kids jumps the gun and puts too many wires in his grapefruit, and it explodes in his face. The teacher has to extract "grapefruit shrapnel" from the kid's nose with tweezers, and he then cautions the class that "citric acid is not a toy". I'm sure that "citric acid" was only a more layman-friendly stand-in for "ascorbic acid"...
It's such a relief to see validation, and from such an unlikely place. link 2 comments post comment Sharper than a Serpant's Tooth is an Ungrateful Child 09:41 pm

    Scurvy
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Scurvy is a disease that results from insufficient intake of vitamin C and leads to the formation of livid spots on the skin, spongy gums and bleeding from almost all mucous membranes . The spots are most abundant on the thighs and legs, and a person with the ailment looks pale, feels depressed, and is partially immobilized. Scurvy was at one time common among sailors whose ships were out to sea longer than perishable fruits and vegetables could be stored and by soldiers who were similarly separated from these foods for extended periods. Symptoms include:
    • weakness joint pain black-and-blue marks on the skin gum disease corkscrew hairs
It takes about three months of vitamin C deprivation to begin inducing the symptoms of scurvy. Untreated scurvy is always fatal, but since all that is required for full recovery is the resumption of normal vitamin C intake, death by scurvy is rare in modern times. Scurvy was probably first observed as a disease by Hippocrates . In the 13th century the Crusaders suffered from scurvy frequently, and it has inflicted terrible losses on both besieged and besieger in times of war. Scurvy was one of the limiting factors of marine travel, often killing large numbers of the passengers and crew on long-distance voyages. It even played a significant role in

    Definition
Scurvy is a condition caused by a lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the diet. Signs of scurvy include tiredness, muscle weakness, joint and muscle aches, a rash on the legs, and bleeding gums. In the past, scurvy was common among sailors and other people deprived of fresh fruits and vegetables for long periods of time.
    Description
Scurvy is very rare in countries where fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available and where processed foods have vitamin C added. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant vitamin involved in the development of connective tissues, lipid and vitamin metabolism, biosynthesis of neurotransmitters, immune function, and wound healing. It is found in fruits, especially citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruit, and in green leafy vegetables like broccoli and spinach. In adults, it may take several months of vitamin C deficiency before symptoms of scurvy develop. Currently, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin C is 50-60 mg/day for adults; 35 mg/day for infants; 40-45 mg/day for children 1-14; 70 mg/day during pregnancy ; and 90-95 mg/day during lactation . The body's need for vitamin C increases when a person is under stress smoking , or taking certain medications.

Defects in structure or assembly of collagen can have severe consequences because of the widespread distribution and important functions of this family of molecules. Diseases that are associated with mutations in collagen genes are summarized in the table below. Collagen gene Pathogenic condition Ehlers-Danlos type VII Osteogenesis imperfecta Achondrogenesis II Hypochondrogenesis Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita Kniest dysplasia Stickler syndrome Ehlers-Danlos type IV Alport syndrome (autosomal recessive) Alport syndrome (X-linked) Alport syndrome with leiomyomatosis Dystrophic forms of epidermolysis bullosa Schmid type metaphyseal dysplasia Stickler syndrome The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are discussed extensively in Biochemistry. Alport's Syndrome is discussed in the ECM lecture. Other collagen diseases, such as scurvy, can result from dietary deficiencies. Here is more information about scurvy than you ever wanted to know unless, like me, you are interested in life in the British navy during the Napoleanic wars: The symptoms of the disease called scurvy included gradual weakening, pale skin, sunken eyes, tender gums, muscle pain, loss of teeth, internal bleeding, and the opening of wounds such as sword cuts that had healed many years before. Exhaustion, fainting, diarrhea, and lung and kidney trouble followed. Eventually, the sailor "went to Davy Jones's locker" (naval slang for dying). Illustration from

    GLOSSEMS:
    In support of ...
BLUEPETE'S HISTORY OF NOVA SCOTIA "Scurvy" Champlain described scurvy: he had first hand knowledge of it having lost 35 of his 79 men when they stayed over for the first winter on a small island St. Croix during the winter of 1604/05: "During the winter a certain disease broke out among many of our people, called the disease of the country, otherwise the scurvy, as I have since heard learned men say. It originated in the mouth of those who have a large amount of flabby and superfluous flesh, (causing a bad putrefaction,) which increases to such an extent, that they can scarcely take any thing, unless it is almost entirely liquid. The teeth became quite loose, and they can be extracted by the fingers without causing any pain. The superfluity of this flesh requires to be cut away, and this causes a violent bleeding from the mouth. They are afterwards seized with a great pain in the legs and arms, which swell up and become very hard, all marked as if bitten by fleas, and they are unable to walk from the contraction of the nerves, so that they have no strength left, and suffer the most intolerable pain. They have also pains in the loins, the stomach and intestines, a very bad cough, and shortness of breath; in short, they are in such a state that the greater part of those seized with the complaint can neither raise nor move themselves, and if they attempt to stand erect they fall down senseless, so that of seventy-nine of us, thirty-five died, and more than twenty barely escaped death. The greater part of those unaffected with the complaint, complained of slight pains and shortness of breath. We could find no remedy to cure those attacked by the complaint, and we could not discover any cause for the disease."
