Sciatica Exercises - yoga poses for sciatic pain.
In the past I had problems with sciatic pain in my right leg, on the concave side of my scoliosis curve. My whole leg would tingle when I walked. If I moved wrong or twisted my body a certain way, I'd get this excruciating, shooting pain down my leg. Ironically, I actually developed sciatica from physical therapy for back pain. I'm not sure about physical therapy in other countries, but in the U.S. many therapists seem to focus a lot on back strengthening exercises, which in my experience can often do more harm than good when back are already tight and in spasm. Knowing what I know now, having eliminated my sciatic pain completely, strengthening exercises were probably the worst thing I did for for sciatic my pain or any other kind of nerve damage. Nerves can be irritated when they get trapped inside constricted muscles, so when I would tighten the muscles in my back and buttocks through the wrong exercises, it just ended up putting more pressure on the nerve, increasing the pain. Eventually I did find on physical therapist who actually helped me a great deal with my leg pain and other orthopedic problems. The PT that helped me focused more on proper body alignment and balancing my muscles, rather than the strengthening and weight training exercises preferred by many of his less knowledgeable colleagues.

Sciatica Treatment - reviews the use of trigger point therapy and acupressure for sciatic pain. After my episodes of acute pain were over from sciatica treatment through trigger point therapy and acupressure, I found yoga to be very helpful in getting my leg and backside back to normal. However, this was only after my sciatic nerve had calmed down some, and even then I had to be very careful of which poses to do. It took a lot of trial and error on my part to determine which poses helped and which poses made me worse. For me, a general yoga class just made my pain worse because many of the poses, like Downward Facing Dog, just put too much pressure on my already-irritated nerves. "It should encourage you to know that case after case of disabling sciatica improved when individualized exercise therapy was used after acute pain had eased."

Definition
Sciatica refers to pain or discomfort associated with the sciatic nerve. This nerve runs from the lower part of the spinal cord, down the back of the leg, to the foot. Injury to or pressure on the sciatic nerve can cause the characteristic pain of sciatica: a sharp or burning pain that radiates from the lower back or hip, possibly following the path of the sciatic nerve to the foot. Description The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the body. About the thickness of a person's thumb, it spans from the lower back to the foot. The nerve originates in the lower part of the spinal cord, the so-called lumbar region. As it branches off from the spinal cord, it passes between the bony vertebrae (the component bones of the spine) and runs through the pelvic girdle, or hip bones. The nerve passes through the hip joint and continues down the back of the leg to the foot. Sciatica is a fairly common disorder and approximately 40% of the population experiences it at some point in their lives. However, only about 1% have coexisting sensory or motor deficits. Sciatic pain has several root causes and treatment may hinge upon the underlying problem. Of the identifiable causes of sciatic pain, lumbosacral radiculopathy and back strain are the most frequently suspected. The term lumbosacral refers to the lower part of the spine, and radiculopathy describes a problem with the spinal nerve roots that pass between the vertebrae and give rise to the sciatic nerve. This area between the vertebrae is cushioned with a disk of shock- absorbing tissue. If this disk shifts or is damaged through injury or disease, the spinal nerve root may be compressed by the shifted tissue or the vertebrae.

    Symptoms
May begin abruptly or gradually and is characterized by a sharp shooting pain running down the back of the thigh. Movement of the limb generally intensifies the suffering. Pain may be uniformly distributed along the limb but frequently there are certain spots where it is more intense; numbness, tingling; nerve may be extremely sensitive to the touch. Symptoms grow worse at night and on approach of stormy weather. Duration of attack varies from a few days to several months. In long-standing cases, muscles grow atrophied and rigid. Recovery follows in majority of cases when treatment is instituted early and is carried out persistently. Some people claim that sciatica, in men, may be caused by "wallet-itis" as they term it. Persistently carrying the wallet in the hip pocket of trousers, sitting on the wallet every day, causes an irritation of the sciatic nerve. To alleviate the sciatic pain and irritation of the sciatic nerve, move the wallet to the other side, or better still, don't use the hip pocket for carrying a wallet at all.

What's Sciatica?
You've stepped off the stairclimber after a 30-minute workout, and suddenly a sharp pain shoots down your right leg. Your whole leg feels weak and numb, and you start hopping on your left foot, like a marionette that's had the strings to one leg cut off. You may have just experienced an attack of sciatica. Sciatica is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve cord, which branches off the spinal cord in your lower back, runs beneath your buttock muscles and continues all the way down your leg. This large bundle of nerves, almost three quarters of an inch wide, supplies sensation and motor control to your buttocks, hips and legs. Pain can originate in your lower back and travel down to your buttocks, thighs or lower legs, or it can flare up anywhere along the length of the nerve. Sciatica can lead to muscle weakness - and it can cause you to lose your reflexes in your knee or ankle; yet this loss of reflex is difficult to detect unless a doctor checks for it.
The Disc Connection
One common cause of sciatica is a damaged, or herniated, disc in the spinal column that pinches a nerve at the root of the sciatic cord. These discs sit like cushioning jelly doughnuts between your vertebrae, the bones that make up your spinal column.

I've been having backaches. What's causing them? You can probably blame your hormones and your shifting center of gravity for that aching back. As pregnancy hormones prepare you for childbirth by loosening up your joints and the ligaments that attach your pelvic bones to your spine, it's not unusual to feel some back pain when walking, standing, sitting for long periods, bending, or lifting. Also, your expanding uterus starts to stretch out and weaken your abdominal muscles, altering your posture and putting a strain on your back. About half of all pregnant women have low back pain at some point. (In late pregnancy, some women feel a sudden, sharp pain in the buttocks that radiates down the thighs and legs. This pain, called sciatica, is usually on one side or the other. It's caused by the growing uterus pressing on the sciatic nerve. You may also feel a tingling sensation or numbness in your legs whenever you have this pain.)

Back Pain and Sciatica
WHAT ARE LOW BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA?
The Spine
Vertebrae. The spine is a column of small bones, or vertebrae, that support the entire upper body. The column is grouped into three sections of vertebrae:
  • The cervical (C) vertebrae are the seven spinal bones that support the neck.
  • The thoracic (T) vertebrae are the twelve spinal bones that connect to the rib cage.
  • The lumbar (L) vertebrae are the five lowest and largest bones of the spinal column. Most of the body's weight and stress falls on the lumbar vertebrae.
  • Below the lumbar region is the sacrum , a shield-shaped bony structure that connects with the pelvis at the sacroiliac joints.
  • At the end of the sacrum are two to four tiny, partially fused vertebrae known as the coccyx or "tail bone."
Each vertebra can be designated by using a letter and number; the letter reflects the region (C=cervical, T=thoracic, and L=lumbar) and the number signifies its location within that region. For example, C4 is the fourth bone down in the cervical region and T8 is the eighth thoracic vertebrae.

A-Z Illnesses and Conditions
Sciatica By Dr Rob Hicks Sciatica is a common form of back pain. The sciatic nerves are the main nerves in the legs and the largest nerves in the body. They run from the base of the spine, along the backs of the thighs, to the knees where they divide into branches. Sciatic pain is usually caused by compression of the sciatic nerve where it leaves the spine. This is often called a 'slipped disc'. Damage to the nerve can also cause sciatic pain. Sciatica is a nerve pain that may be felt in the buttock, down the back of the leg, and below the knee and in the foot. Pain can be mild or severe and may be persistent or come in spasms. Sciatica is often accompanied by low back pain. Numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness in the leg may accompany the pain. Sciatic pain can be worse when someone coughs or moves.

CHINESE HERBAL THERAPY FOR sciatica AND LUMBAGO. by Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Traditional Medicine, Portland, Oregon.
http://www.itmonline.org/arts/sciatica.htm
CHINESE HERBAL THERAPY FOR
SCIATICA AND LUMBAGO by Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Traditional Medicine, Portland, Oregon Sciatica refers to pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, which originates in the lower spine as a combination of several nerves from the lumbosacral region (1, 2). The nerve branches from the spine to the left and right buttocks and then travels down the back of the legs, at about the middle of the thighs, to the feet. Sciatic pain usually radiates from the buttock and is felt primarily in the back of the thigh, though it may extend to the foot. Usually, only one side is affected. Although the pain is felt in the fleshy part of the body, the origin of the pain is a pinching of one or more of the nerves departing the spinal cord in the area of the intervertebral disks. Initially, there may be a temporary prolapse or extrusion of the disk (or disks) that causes the spinal column to squeeze down on the nerves. In cases of destruction of the disk, the pain will become chronic. Pressure can also be applied on the nerve from damage to the vertebra themselves.
