Personality Disorders
What are personality disorders?
For persons without a personality disorder, personality traits are patterns of thinking, reacting, and behaving that remain relatively consistent and stable over time. Persons with a personality disorder display more rigid and maladaptive thinking and reacting behaviors that often disrupt their personal, professional, and social lives.
What are the most common types of personality disorders?
Generally, personality disorders are divided into three subtypes (or clusters), and include the following: Subtype Classification Cluster A: odd/eccentric Cluster B: dramatic/erratic Cluster C: anxious/inhibited
Examples of odd/eccentric (Cluster A) personality disorders:
  • paranoid personality disorder
Persons with this disorder are often cold, distant, and unable to form close, interpersonal relationships. Often overly, yet unjustifiably, suspicious of their surroundings, persons with paranoid personality disorder generally cannot see their role in conflict situations and often project their feelings of paranoia as anger onto others. schizoid personality disorder
Persons with this disorder are often cold, distant, introverted, and have an intense fear of intimacy and closeness. Persons with schizoid personality disorder are often too absorbed in their own thinking and daydreaming that they exclude themselves from attachment with persons and reality.

While psychiatrists are clear that Paranoid and Schizotypal Personality Diorders are in schizophrenia spectrum, they are not
clear yet about Schizoid Personality Disorder. I think Schizoid Personality Disorder is also schizophrenia spectrum.
First, Schizoid Personality Disorder shares negative simptoms with schizophrenia. Individuals with this disorder are socially
withdrawn just as schizophrenics are. Also, in 'associated feautures and disorders' in DSM 4 for Schizoid Personality Disorder
it said that schizoid individuals tend to drift in their goals. Lack of goal-directed activity is also a negative simptom of
schizophrenia.
Another think is that in associated feautures and disorders it said that Schizoid people might develop psychotic episode in
response to stress. It is important to know that schizophrenia gene determines a possibility of developing schizophrenia, not an
actual desease. Otherwise every schizophrenic would be schizophrenic by birth and also, since schizophrenia gene is dominant, every schizophrenic would have at least one schizophrenic parent. Neither of those things are true. However, it is noted that

Personality Disorders Foundation What are Personality Disorders? Personality Disorders are generalized, inflexible patterns of inner experience and behavior. These patterns significantly differ from cultural expectations, and begin in adolescence or early adulthood. Personality Disorders are long-term, maladaptive patterns of perception, emotional regulation, anxiety, and impulse control. They can lead to enormous personal and societal costs, including lost productivity, hospitalizations, significant unhappiness, imprisonment, and suicide. Personality Disorders are among the least understood and recognized disorders in both psychiatry and general medical care. Ironically, as a group of disorders, they are among the most common of the severe mental disorders, and occur frequently with other illnesses (e.g., substance use disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders). Many imprisoned individuals also have a diagnosable personality disorder. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV, American Psychiatric Association, 1994), organizes personality disorders into three groups, with three or four disorders per group: Eccentric Personality Disorders: Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal

URL: http://blog.beebware.co.uk/archives/000453.html Well, according to the Personality Disorder Test , I have a very high chance being Schizoid: People with schizoid personality disorder avoid relationships and do not show much emotion. They genuinely prefer to be alone and do not secretly wish for popularity. Well, I don't tend to avoid relationships - but I do tend to keep myself to myself and I'm not bothered whether I'm popular or not. They tend to seek jobs that require little social contact. Any sort of computer work is a solitary sort of job, although I have had jobs where I came in contact with several hundred people a day! I don't mind either way. Their social skills are often weak and they do not show a need for attention or acceptance. Disagree with the first part, agree with the latter.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Personality disorders are a form of mental disorder A mental illness is a psychiatric disorder that results in a disruption in a person's thinking, feeling, moods, and ability to relate to others. Psychiatrists generally attribute mental illness to organic/neurochemical causes that can be treated with psychiatric medication, psychotherapy, lifestyle adjustments and other supportive measures. Compare rational-emotive therapy. Mental illness is distinct from the legal concept of insanity.

They are characterised by a long-term pattern of serious behavioural differences that significantly affect the functioning of the individual in personal and social situations. Personality disorders are represented on Axis II of the DSM-IV The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , published by the American Psychiatric Association, is the handbook used most often in diagnosing mental disorders in the United States and other countries. While widely accepted among psychologists and psychiatrists, the manual has proved controversial in its listing of certain characteristics as mental disorders. The most notorious example is the listing in the DSM-II of homosexuality as a mental disorder; a classification that was removed by vote of the APA in 1973 (see also homosexuality and psychology).

A personality disorder is said to exist when the way in which an individual consistently perceives, relates to and thinks about him- or herself and the world around him or her is so rigid and out of sync with others that it causes great difficulty in forming and sustaining relationships and coping with the normal stresses of daily living.
Personality Disorders
Personality traits are the way in which individuals consistently perceive, relate to and think about themselves and the world around them. Their personality is the way they exhibit these traits in their interactions with other people. People with healthy personalities are able to cope with the normal stresses of daily living and have no trouble forming appropriate relationships with family, friends and co-workers. A personality disorder is said to exist when the way in which an individual consistently perceives, relates to and thinks about him- or herself and the world around him or her is so rigid and out of sync with others that it causes difficulty in forming and sustaining relationships and coping with the normal stresses of daily living. As a result, the individual feels very unhappy and distressed. The many different types of personality disorders are generally grouped into three clusters, each with their own set of behaviors and symptoms. The three clusters are:

Characteristics and Traits Schizoids are often described, even by their nearest and dearest, in terms of automata ("robots"). They are uninterested in social relationships or interactions and have a very limited emotional repertoire. It is not that they do not have emotions - but they express them poorly and intermittently. They appear cold and stunted, flat, and "zombie"-like.
Consequently, these people are loners. They confide only in first-degree relatives - but maintain no close bonds or associations, not even with their immediate family. Naturally, they gravitate into solitary activities and find solace and safety in being constantly alone and detached from the world. Their sexual experiences are sporadic and limited and, finally, they cease altogether.
Schizoids are anhedonic - find nothing pleasurable and attractive - but not necessarily dysphoric (sad or depressed). They pretend to be indifferent to praise, criticism, disagreement, and corrective advice (though, deep inside, they are not). They are creatures of habit, frequently succumbing to rigid, predictable, and narrowly restricted routines.

    http://www.pipeline.com/~dada3zen/schizoid_a_personality_not_a_disorder.htm
The paper below was written by my ex. I've noticed that it has taken on a "life of it's own", so I finally felt that I should let the readers in on the context in which it was originally intended: it was a paper for a class at graduate school (of which was subsequently rejected, I thought it would be good to find at least some use for it via my site, The Introverts Hideaway ). The assignment was to write about an "oppressed group". Allison wished not to use the usual suspects (racial, sexual orientation, etc) and she decided to use a novel idea that had been bouncing around in my head: the opposition of the term "disorder" for a personality type. That many of these personality types are not disorders, but in fact actual base personalities. Yes, of course, the semantical response is one of "But, Schizoid does effect ones life to the point of it being rightfully considered a disorder, as opposed to a base personality type." To which it does only in the sense of it's oppression via societal lifestyle norms and/or expectations of which are based upon extreme extroversion. So, an extreme introvert is , essentially, oppressed by their base personality. Thus invites the term "disorder". However, I still argue the validity of "disorder" being attached to certain personalities as Schizoid.

    Personality Disorder Test
On a modem? Please give the test a minute to load.
This test, sponsored by 4degreez.com , is meant to help determine whether or not you have a personality disorder. It is not meant to be used as a diagnostic tool, but rather as a tool to give you insight into a potential disorder that may be having a negative impact on your life. If you believe you may be suffering from a personality disorder or any other disorder, you should ask your family doctor to recommend a therapist in your area to meet with.
First, what is a personality disorder?
A personality disorder is basically a set of traits that combine to negatively affect your life. They have a wide range of causes and some are easier to treat than others. This test is set up to look for the ten recongized personality disorders which are Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal, Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, Narcissistic, Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-Compulsive.
Once again, this test is not meant to be used as a diagnostic tool. Only a trained professional can properly diagnose a personality disorder.
Finally, be honest! This test is completely anonymous, so please be honest otherwise you will not get the proper results.
