Definition
Schizoaffective disorder is a mental illness that shares the psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia and the mood disturbances of depression or bipolar disorder
Description
The term schizoaffective disorder was first used in the 1930s to describe patients with acute psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions along with disturbed mood. These patients tended to function well before becoming psychotic; their psychotic symptoms lasted relatively briefly; and they tended to do well afterward. Over the years, however, the term schizoaffective disorder has been applied to a variety of patient groups. The current definition contained in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV DSM-IV ) recognizes patients with schizoaffective disorder as those whose mood symptoms are sufficiently severe to warrant a diagnosis of depression or other full-blown mood disorder and whose mood symptoms overlap at some period with psychotic symptoms that satisfy the diagnosis of schizophrenia (e.g. hallucinations, delusions, or thought process disorder).
Causes and symptoms
The cause of schizoaffective disorder remains unknown and subject to continuing speculation. Some investigators believe schizoaffective disorder is associated with schizophrenia and may be caused by a similar biological predisposition. Others disagree, stressing the disorder's similarities to

Less is known about how closely individual differences in personality are uniquely related to levels of social relationships, a domain of dysfunction in schizophrenia more often linked in the literature with symptoms and neurocognitive deficits. This study tested the hypothesis that trait levels of personality as defined using the five-factor model of personality would be linked to social function in schizophrenia.

  • eMedicine: Schizoaffective Disorder - Schizoaffective disorder is a perplexing mental illness distinguished by a combination of symptoms of a thought disorder or other psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions (schizophrenia component) and those of a mood disorder (depressive or manic component). The coupling of symptoms from these divergent spectrums makes treating patients who are schizoaffective difficult. MEDLINEplus Medical Encyclopedia: Schizoaffective disorder - A disorder that includes features of both schizophrenia (hallucinations, delusions, and deteriorating function) and a mood disorder (either bipolar disorder "manic depression" or major depressive disorder) in which the symptoms are so intertwined that a distinction between the two problems cannot be made. Schizoaffective Disorder - Occasionally, clinicians are confronted with a client whose disorder of mood is equal of anything seen in the major or bipolar disorders but whose mental and cognitive processes are so deranged as to suggest the presence of Schizophrenia. SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDER
GENERAL INFORMATION: What is it? Schizoaffective (skits-o-ah-fek-tiv) disorder is a mental illness. You will have this for a long time. It affects your mood and your thinking. Sometimes it is hard to know what is real and what is not real. Sometimes you may feel very depressed (sad), happy, or both. Schizoaffective disorder can change how you think and act around others. There is no cure for schizoaffective disorder. But, medicine and therapy can help. Causes: It is not known what causes schizoaffective disorder. You may have a chemical imbalance in the brain. Stress cannot cause you to have this illness. But, it can make the symptoms worse. You may be more likely to get this disorder if a family member has schizophrenia (skits-o-fren-e-uh). Having a relative with a mood disorder may also make it more likely for you to get schizoaffective disorder. A woman is more likely to get this illness than a man. Signs and Symptoms: Signs of schizoaffective disorder usually show up slowly. You may have changes in your eating or sleeping habits, energy level, or weight. You may feel confused, not think clearly, or not be able to make decisions. People close to you may see these changes before you do.

Schizoaffective disorder
Schizoaffective disorder is a mental disorder that combines the symptoms of mood disorder and schizophrenia . Both symptoms are prominent. The illness usually begins in early adulthood, and is more common in women. There are two sub-types of schizoaffective disorder: the bipolar type and the depressive type. The bipolar type has a better prognosis than the depressive type, which can have a residual defect with the passing of time. Bipolar schizoaffective disorder is more similar to bipolar disorder than schizophrenia. People with bipolar disorder may also suffer from isolated episodes of schizoaffective disorders. People that have a schizoaffective disorder have symptoms of schizophrenia, such as bizarre delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized speech or behaviour, as well as mood disorders, all at the same time. However, there will usually be periods of at least two weeks with psychotic features, but with an absence of mood disorders (such as a major depression or a manic or mixed state episode).

Schizoaffective Disorders
What Are Schizoaffective Disorders?
Schizoaffective disorders are basically a combination of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, and mood disorders such as mania or depression. The symptoms of these two different types of disorders either occur at the same time as each other, or within a few days of each other
What Treatment Is There?
The Psychotic symptoms are treated as they would be if the person was suffering from psychosis alone (e.g. antipsychotic medication cognitive-behavioural therapy The Mood symptoms are also treated as if the person was suffering from a mood disorder alone (e.g. antidepressant medication electro-convulsive therapy
Do People Recover?
This is hard to judge, because schizoaffective disorders have the two componants to them. However, the answer is probably mostly no, although the psychosis and the mood disorders can be treated, the condition is rarely cured, but managed, with the person going for periods of time free from symptoms of either. We are creating a SimplePsych factsheet on Delusional (Paranoid) Disorders which goes into more detail while still using easy to understand English. ICD-10 Criteria for Schizoaffective Disorder
F25 Schizoaffective Disorder
These are episodic disorders in which both affective and schizophrenic symptoms are prominent within the same episode of illness, preferably simultaneously, but at least within a few days of each other. Their relationship to typical mood (affective) disorders and to schizophrenic disorders is uncertain. They are given a separate category because they are too common to be ignored. Other conditions in which affective symptoms are superimposed upon or form part of a pre-existing schizophrenic illness, or in which they coexist or alternate with other types of persistent delusional disorders, are classified under the appropriate category. Mood-incongruent delusions or hallucinations in affective disorders do not by themselves justify a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder. Patients who suffer from recurrent schizoaffective episodes, particularly those whose symptoms are of the manic rather than the depressive type, usually make a full recovery and only rarely develop a defect state.
