Scarlet fever, also known as scarlatina, is an infectious disease that causes a rash. It is usually associated with an infection by streptococci, such as strep throat. It may also be associated with wounds or burns that become infected. The rash of scarlet fever is typically a fine, "sandpaper-like" rash that consists of small, red bumps. Scarlet fever
Definition: Scarlet fever is a disease caused by an infection of the throat with group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal bacteria ( strep throat
Alternative Names: Scarlatina
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Scarlet fever was once a very serious childhood disease, but now is easily treatable. The incubation period is short, generally 1-2 days. Illness typically begins with a fever and sore throat. It may be accompanied by chills, vomiting, abdominal pain, and malaise. The streptococcal bacteria produces a toxin that causes a rash that appears one to two days after the onset of illness. The rash usually first appears on the neck and chest, then spreads over the body. It is described as "sandpapery" in quality. The texture of the rash is more important than the appearance in confirming the diagnosis. The rash can last for over a week. As the rash fades, peeling (desquamation) may occur around the finger tips, toes, and groin area. The main risk factors is infection with the bacteria that causes strep throat . A history of strep throat or scarlet fever in the community, neighborhood, or school may increase the risk of infection.

I stood outside the Lucky Star
    Staring at the flashing sign
It read: come on in and watch young Scarlet´s body come alive Let her dance for you and catch your spell You´ll swear you can believe her Be careful not to catch the scarlet fever. So I paid my fare and walked down front And found an empty chair As I settled in young scarlet took the ribbons from her hair The moves her body made while the music played Were the likes I´ve never seen And she became the envy of my dreams. One by one her teasing movements Brought the crowd out of their seats And all at once young scarlet Danced straight up in front of me From the moment that her eyes found mine I´ve never been the same Scarlet locked another heart upon her chain.

    scarlet fever
A highly contagious disease, usually encountered in childhood, caused by hemolytic streptococus. It is spread through the air or through contaminated food, and was virtually untreatable before the development of antibiotics, although penicillin and gamma globulin have made it much less common in the twentieth century. Scarlet fever's onset is sudden (typically two to seven days after exposure), beginning with a sore throat, shivering, and a headache. It develops on the second day into a rash behind the ears, which spreads to the arms and legs. Thomas Sydenham, a physician of the late seventeenth century, describes its symptoms thus: "The skin is marked with small, red spots, more frequent, more diffuse, and more red than in measles. These last two or three days. They then disappear, leaving the skin covered with brawny squamulae [scales], as if powdered with meal." Scarlet fever leaves the glands swollen and often sensitive; in some cases, the squamulae on parts of the patient's skin peel off. The greatest threats arise from complications. Sinus infections, abcesses of the ear, and mastoiditis are common. In a few cases, scarlet fever leads to arthritis, rheumatic fever, or kidney failure.

Scarlet fever sounds scary because in the past people sometimes developed serious consequences with the disease (remember Beth from "Little Women"?) But nowadays, it's treated with antibiotics and presents few complications. It's the same thing as strep throat, only with the rash. As long as your DD takes all the antibiotics she should feel better within 12-24 hours, although the rash may start peeling and get a little itchy within a few days. Pam
    RE: Scarlet Fever
Isn't scarlet fever bacterial? I thought is was caused by the same bacteria that causes strep throat. Are you sure he said the VIRUS was in her bloodstream? If so, does she have a virus AS WELL as scarlet fever? My son had scarlet fever last year. Once he was on the antibiotics he felt better almost immediately. He was not throwing up while he had it although sometimes that is caused by the onset of fever, not necessarily the infection.
    The infection didn't last long.
