Scarlet Fever
What is scarlet fever and how common is it?
Scarlet fever is a colorful name given to strep throat that comes with a rash . Before antibiotics were available, this was a very scary infection. Now it is very easy to treat, but still dangerous if untreated. It's fairly common, but many docs don't use the words "scarlet fever" because that term conjures up frightening images from the past. I see a child with it about every two weeks or so. The rash usually feels like sandpaper and is often most pronounced just around the armpits.

Definition
Scarlet fever is an infection that is caused by a bacteria called streptococcus. The disease is characterized by a sore throat fever , and a sandpaper-like rash on reddened skin. It is primarily a childhood disease. If scarlet fever is untreated, serious complications such as rheumatic fever (a heart disease) or kidney inflammation ( glomerulonephritis ) can develop. Description
Scarlet fever, also known as scarlatina, gets its name from the fact that the patient's skin, especially on the cheeks, is flushed. A sore throat and raised rash over much of the body are accompanied by fever and sluggishness (lethargy). The fever usually subsides within a few days and recovery is complete by two weeks. After the fever is gone, the skin on the face and body flakes; the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet peels more dramatically. This disease primarily affects children ages two to ten. It is highly contagious and is spread by sneezing, coughing, or direct contact. The incubation period is three to five days, with symptoms usually beginning on the second day of the disease, and lasting from four to ten days. Early in the 20th century, severe scarlet fever epidemics were common. Today, the disease is rare. Although this decline is due in part to the availability of

Scarlet Fever
Scarlet fever is caused by certain strains of the group A streptococci bacteria (which also causes strep throat) and it is common to think of scarlet fever as strep throat with a rash . Symptoms usually develop about 1-7 days (incubation period) after being exposed to someone with strep throat or scarlet fever. Related Topics Strep Throat Rheumatic Fever Scarlet fever is most common in children under ten years old and begins with a fever and sore throat . Other symptoms can include vomiting, headache, chills and abdominal pain. Many children with this infection have a high fever initially, which may reach 103-104 degrees F. It may also be associated with wounds or burns that become infected. The rash of scarlet fever is typically a fine, “sandpaper-like” rash that consists of small, red bumps. This illness, characterized by high fever and a bright, red rash covering the entire body, occurs in conjunction with about 10 percent of cases of streptococcal respiratory infection, or strep throat. In general, the widespread use of antibiotics to treat strep throat has made scarlet fever less common than it was in the past, but occasional outbreaks still occur. Like strep throat, scarlet fever is most common among children over the age of four. It generally spreads in school and household settings. WHAT CAUSES SCARLET FEVER?
WHEN SHOULD I SUSPECT THAT MY CHILD HAS SCARLET FEVER?
The first symptoms, which may develop suddenly, include a high fever, headache, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Occasionally, abdominal pain and vomiting develop one or two days before the rash appears. The rash, which consists of tiny, red bumps, begins on the trunk and spreads outward, covering the body in a matter of hours or days, giving the skin a rough sandpaper-like texture. Application of pressure makes the bumps disappear momentarily. IS MEDICAL ATTENTION NECESSARY?
