The displaced disc may exert force on a nearby nerve root causing the typical neurologic symptoms of radiating pain (to an extremity), numbness, tingling and weakness. Recurrent episodes of severe back pain are common.
Treatment includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids and rest. More advanced cases may require surgical intervention (for example laminectomy, micro-disc surgery).

Patients experience symptoms associated with compression of the nerve roots and cauda equina. Back pain is usually the primary complaint making it important to differentiate the pain from that caused by musculo-ligamentous strain. It is for this reason that we stress the importance of extensive conservative therapy before considering surgical intervention. Plain x-ray flexion / extension films may demonstrate movement of one vertebral body over the other as well as reduced disk space height In Lumbar Inter-body Fusion with cages the disk is removed and titanium cages filled with bone are inserted between the vertebral bodies in order to maintain disk space height and fuse the joint, thereby eliminating abnormal movement (figs. 3-6). This is a state-of-the-art procedure, as the cages used for this are new and revolutionary in concept. Compared to a "posterior fusion" with pedicle screws where the posterior elements and not the vertebral bodies are fused, it is felt that the interbody fusion with cages has a greater chance for a successful fusion. This is because gravity aids in

69. Intervertebral Disk Disease: Pet Health Topics From The College Of Veterinary Me
Rupture of a disk occurs commonly in small dogs. CT or MRI are other techniques that can be used to see the ruptured disk. How is disk disease treated?
http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/ClientED/ivd.asp
Pet Health Home Intervertebral Disk Disease Topics Index Terminology This information is not meant to be a substitute for veterinary care. Always follow the instructions provided by your veterinarian.
What are Intervertebral Disks? The intervertebral disks sit between the vertebrae in the spine. They act like shock-absorbers to help dissipate the forces placed on the spine. They have two portions, an outside fibrous covering ( the annulus fibrosis) and an inside, more gelatinous portion, the nucleus pulposis. In this way they kind of resemble a jelly donut. The outside of the donut is the annulus, and the jelly on the inside is like the nucleus pulposis Related anatomy What is intervertebral disk disease? When the intervertebral disks become damaged, this is referred to as intervertebral disk disease ("Disk disease", "Slipped disk"). As disks age, they lose water content, and become less able to withstand compression. They become less able to withstand forces placed upon them. If too much force is placed on them, they can be squeezed and expand or rupture. This rupture usually occurs in an upward direction, and the disk extrudes into the spinal canal where the spinal cord is. Signs develop either because of the force of the disk material hitting the cord, or due to the disk material compressing the spinal cord. Intervertebral disk disease can occur in any area of the spinal cord. Dachshunds appear predisposed, as their disks age or degenerate quicker than most dogs. Young to middle-aged dogs are most commonly affected. Dogs less than 1 year of age rarely have intervertebral disc disease. Geriatric dogs are occasionally affected. Clinical signs of disk disease are rare in cats.

Definition

About three fourths of all people experience back pain at some point in their lives. It is one of the biggest reasons for disability and sick leave.
Low back and neck pains are very common. They have numerous causes, including compressed nerves, ruptured disks, back strain, injured muscles, joints, ligaments or bones, degenerative diseases and changes in the shape of the spine.
Other causes include osteoporosis, arthritis, scoliosis, repetitive motion, obesity, injury and stress.
Most problems are solved without surgery. Only two to three percent of all back pain is caused by a herniated disk, and only one percent of back pain is caused by a compressed nerve.
Influenza, sleeping habits, arthritis, a pinched nerve, an infection or, rarely, cancer, as well as other factors can also cause neck pain. back to top Symptoms
The symptoms vary depending on the source, with the following listed as some of the most common:

Location: Knoxville, TN or vicinity
When: 1990-1995
Witnesses: Marshall Dudley and others
Names: All Names changed for privacy Told by me, Marshall Dudley. The following were all witnessed by me. The people and healer wish to remain anonymous. Gary was on the back of a motorcycle when a woman hit them head on several years earlier. He spent months in the hospital, and although most of his injuries had healed, he had a ruptured disk that caused him unending pain. Often it would be so bad that he would have to leave work early. A co-worker offered to see if he could help with hands on Christian healing and although Gary was not certain he believed it possible, he knew the doctors had told him there was nothing else they could do. Every time his pain became too much, he went to the co-worker who put his hands on his back and prayed for his healing. The heat was intense, and after a minute or two the pain would subside. However, a few hours later it would return. He was discouraged that although the healing would work for a while, the pain would eventually return. However, over the next few weeks the pain took longer and longer to return, and was less and less severe. After 5 or 6 weeks the pain was gone for good. Gary returned to the doctor for his periodical checkup. The doctor was astounded that the ruptured disk had healed! According to him, ruptured disks do not heal. When pressed for an explaination the doctor said the only possible explaination was that obviously there had been a mixup on his X-RAYS before (every time they took them) and that the file X-Ray's were of someone else. However Gary and I know the truth.

Subject: Herniated Disk
IP: Logged Message: After 10 months of low back pain, on Nov 4, I suffered a ruptured disk between Vertebrae Lumbars L3-L4 while warming up for my strength training routine. The ruptured disk is pressing against some major nerves, which has led to some paralysis in the left leg. Running is impossible and walking is tough. Basically, after Rx treatments, pain is reduced but neither full motion nor strength has returned. I interesting in hearing from anyone with experience recovering and running after such an injury. I have had an MRI and am progressively seeking additional medical consultations, etc.

Such products very often result in permanent and disabling injuries. These injuries invariably cause immense pain and suffering as well as mounting medical expenses and lost wages. They necessarily have a significant impact on spouses, children and other loved ones. The emotional toll they take on a family is immeasurable. Although no amount of money can repair the damage such injuries cause to the person or his or her family, the economic pressures created by the injuries can be relieved through the assertion of a proper claim against the responsible party. Such claims are generally called product liability claims. Product liability claims and lawsuits against manufacturers and retailers are very difficult to maintain. Such companies generally have large legal staffs or have major insurance companies defending their interests. Claims against these companies virtually always end up in litigation. In order to be successful in product liability lawsuits, experts in engineering or other specialized areas must be retained to testify with respect to the defects in the design or construction of the product. The litigation generally requires the devotion of a significant amount of time, resources and energy. Since the litigation can be protracted and evidence lost, it is important that a person who believes they have a potential claim against a company for the manufacturing or sale of a dangerous product immediately start pursuing their claim.

Treatment options for a lumbar herniated disk
The care of a patient with a lumbar herniated disk is far from standardized and, to a certain extent, needs to be individualized for each patient. A lumbar disk herniation usually causes leg pain (sciatica or a radiculopathy) and is often referred to as a pinched nerve, bulging disk, ruptured disk, or a slipped disk. The treatment will largely depend on the length of time the patient has had his or her symptoms and the severity of the pain. Generally, patients will be advised to start with 6 to 12 weeks of conservative treatment (such as physical therapy).
