Rubeola dureaza in jur de o saptamana.

Communicable Disease
Measles
(rubeola, hard measles, red measles) What is measles? Measles is an acute, highly contagious viral disease capable of producing epidemics. Since the introduction of the measles vaccination in 1963, the number of measles cases has decreased to about 100 cases reported annually in the United States. Who gets measles? Although measles is usually considered a childhood disease, it can be contracted at any age. In recent years, outbreaks have mainly involved high school and college students who are unvaccinated or have received only one dose of measles vaccine. How is measles spread? Measles is spread by direct contact with nasal or throat secretions of infected people or, less frequently, by airborne transmission. Measles is one of the most readily transmitted communicable diseases. What are the symptoms of measles? Measles symptoms generally appear in two stages. In the first stage, the individual may have a runny nose, cough and a slight fever. The eyes may become reddened and sensitive to light while the fever consistently rises each day. The second stage begins on the third to seventh day and consists of a temperature of 103-105 o F, and a red blotchy rash lasting four to seven days. The rash usually begins on the face and then spreads over the entire body. Koplik spots (little white spots) may also appear on the gums and inside of the cheeks.

Back to table of contents Measles (Rubeola) Measles is a very contagious viral illness caused by an RNA virus. It is found world wide and has a very distinct clinical picture. Clinical Course
  • After an incubation period of 8-12 days, the initial symptom is a fever, sometimes to 40C. Average time from exposure to rash is 14 days. This is followed by the development of the three Cís, cough, conjunctivitis, and coryza. Koplik spots, white spots on a red base on the buccal mucosa, will develop during this period prior to the development of the rash. The rash begins on the head and moves caudally. It is a maculopapular rash that is often confluent and not pruritic. It may last for up to a week and fades in order of appearance. It may be hemorrhagic. Variations and milder forms may occur if there is protective maternal antibody present or the child has recently received immunoglobulin. Individuals who have been immunized and have waning immunity, may have a milder disease.
  • Complications
  • Otitis and pneumonias that are of viral or secondary bacterial etiology. Croup syndromes Gastroenteritis including appendicitis like symptoms secondary to obscuring of the appendiceal lumen by proliferating lymphoid tissue.

    Rubeola
Rubeola, also known as measles, is a serious and highly contagious disease. It is spread by airborne droplets that are introduced into the atmosphere when an infected person sneezes or coughs. The symptoms of measles are a rash over most of the body, high fever , cough, runny nose, and watery eyes. The symptoms generally persist for up to two weeks. A small percentage (approximately 10%) of children with measles develop more serious symptoms, such as ear infection, pneumonia, diarrhea , and seizures . In rare instances, measles can result in encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), brain damage, and in extremely rare instances, death. A vaccine against measles has been widely available since 1963, and epidemics are rare. In the 1990s, a few outbreaks of measles were attributed to relaxed attitudes about immunization , since the disease seems to be under control. Rubeola, like

    Topic Overview
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that causes severe coldlike symptoms, high fever, and a distinct red rash Measles, also called rubeola or red measles, was once a common childhood disease in the United States, causing up to 450 deaths per year. Now it has been virtually stamped out in many developed countries, thanks to widespread immunization. In recent years, about 100 cases have been reported annually in the United States, most of those brought in by travelers and spread to unvaccinated people. Measles is still common in some underdeveloped countries. Many people have been alarmed by a report published on the Internet that falsely linked the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) immunization with autism . Recently, researchers conducted several comprehensive studies and found no connection between the MMR immunization and autism.
