Although generally a mild rash illness, if contracted in the early months of pregnancy, rubella is associated with a high rate of fetal wastage or birth defects, known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Occurrence or older Risk for Travelers Rubella occurs worldwide, and the risk of exposure to rubella outside the United States can be high. Although more than half of all countries now use rubella vaccine, rubella still remains a common disease in many parts of the world. Prevention Rubella vaccine contains live, attenuated rubella virus. It is available as a single-antigen preparation or combined with live, attenuated measles or mumps vaccines, or both. Combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is recommended whenever one or more of the individual components is indicated. or older . The second dose should be separated from the first dose by a minimum of 28 days. You are in: Bacterial and Viral Infections Measles Overview Measles, also known as rubeola, is a viral infection of your respiratory system. Measles and German measles (known as rubella) are different diseases caused by different viruses. Although mainly a disease of children, measles can affect all age groups.
Rubella, also known as German measles or three-day measles, is an infection caused by a virus different from rubeola (measles).
  • In children, rubella infection is much like a mild case of rubeola. But in adults and teenagers, it can be more severe. The striking feature of rubella infection is the marked enlargement and tenderness of your lymph nodes, which is more severe than with rubeola.

Because you'll never forget what Rubella can do
When Sense started in 1955, rubella in pregnancy was the main cause of congenital deafblindness. Thanks to vaccination, this is much less common and Sense wants to keep it that way. Sense is worried that parents may not understand how damaging rubella can be and that a drop in immunisation may lead to a rubella epidemic. If you're thinking about immunisation, please consider the damage that rubella could do - to you, your child, grandchild or someone else's child. This website gives more information about rubella and about the effects of rubella We believe that parents have the right to make an informed choice about vaccination, based on all the information available - but Sense is confident that the MMR vaccination is the safest way to protect your child and other children. Parents reassured on vaccine

MMR vaccination can prevent disabling and even fatal diseases
Medical researchers have given parents the strongest reassurance yet that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine will not cause their children to develop autism. And they emphasised that there is no link between bowel disease and the jab. The BBC's Fergus Walsh: "Two major studies have ruled out any link with autism or bowel disease" Experts have also warned if confidence in the vaccine, known as MMR, does not return, new epidemics of childhood diseases could break out in as little as three years. Two new studies published in "The Lancet" on Friday show there is no link between the introduction of the vaccine and the sharp rise in autism diagnosed in children. Doctors and government health experts are now hoping the new findings will convince parents who have shunned the jabs that they are safe. 'Mothers must trust MMR' Professor Brent Taylor, of the Royal Free Medical School in north London, which carried out the research, said it was important mothers began to trust MMR again.

Quick Reference and Fact Sheets Rubella
Rubella (German measles) is a mild childhood illness that poses a serious threat to the fetus (unborn baby), if the mother contracts the illness during pregnancy. More than 20,000 babies were born with defects during an outbreak of rubella in 1964-65. The same outbreak also resulted in at least 10,000 miscarriages and stillbirths.
Fortunately, major outbreaks of rubella no longer occur in the United States. Since 1969, when a vaccine for rubella became available, children have been routinely vaccinated, helping to prevent the spread of the illness to susceptible pregnant women. Most women of childbearing age are immune to rubella because they either were vaccinated or had the illness during childhood. Because of widespread use of the vaccine, birth defects caused by rubella have become rare.
However, since small outbreaks of rubella continue to occur, the potential for susceptible pregnant women to become infected continues to exist. As many as 2 in 10 women of childbearing age are susceptible to rubella. Women can protect their future children from the effects of rubella by getting tested for immunity prior to pregnancy and being vaccinated if they are not immune.

Rubella What you need to know:
Rubella (German measles) is a mild childhood illness that can cause serious birth defects in an unborn baby. About 25 percent of babies whose mothers get rubella in the first trimester of pregnancy are born with one or more birth defects (congenital rubella syndrome) including eye defects, hearing loss, heart defects, mental retardation and, less frequently, movement disorders.
With the widespread use of the rubella vaccine, major outbreaks of rubella no longer occur in the United States. Still, small outbreaks do occur. As many as 20 percent of childbearing women are susceptible to rubella infection.
What you can do:
There is a simple blood test that can determine if you are immune to rubella. The March of Dimes recommends that all women be tested for immunity to rubella before becoming pregnant. If you are not immune, consider being vaccinated at least 28 days before trying to get pregnant. Pregnant women are routinely tested for rubella immunity at an early prenatal visit. If a pregnant woman finds out she is not immune, she should not be vaccinated during pregnancy. All she can do is try to avoid exposure to anyone with the illness. She can also get vaccinated soon after delivery so she is immune during any future pregnancies.

IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION - RUBELLA (GERMAN MEASLES)
OVERVIEW The Disease
Rubella is also called German measles or 3-day measles. When children get it, it is usually a mild disease. Rubella also strikes adults, and outbreaks can occur among teenagers and young adults who have not been immunized. Rubella usually occurs in the winter and spring and spreads very easily. People catch it through contact with other people who are infected. It is spread through coughing, sneezing, or talking. Rubella Immunization
Rubella vaccine can be given by itself, but it is usually given together with measles and mumps vaccines in a shot called MMR. You can read about MMR vaccine on page . State Immunization Requirements
All 50 States have laws requiring school children to be immunized against rubella. Forty-nine states have laws requiring children entering day care to be immunized against rubella. MMR Vaccine

What causes rubella?
Rubella is caused by a virus. How does rubella spread?
Rubella spreads person to person through the air. It is moderately contagious. How long does it take to show signs of rubella after being exposed?
The incubation period varies from 12 to 23 days. Symptoms are often mild and may be inapparent or missed 30%-50% of the time. What are the symptoms of rubella?
Children with rubella usually first break out in a rash, which starts on the face and progresses down the body. Older children and adults usually first suffer from low-grade fever, swollen glands in the neck or behind the ears, and upper respiratory infection before they develop a rash. Adult women often develop pain and stiffness in their finger, wrist, and knee joints, which may last up to a month. Up to half of people infected with rubella virus have no symptoms at all. How serious is rubella?
