Rosacea: Get the Red Out It is estimated that nearly 14 million Americans have rosacea, a common but little-known inflammatory skin condition characterized by dilation of the blood vessels in the face. Rosacea is often misdiagnosed as acne or discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It usually occurs on the cheeks, nose, central forehead and chin, and can also occur on the upper back and upper chest. If you were to look at the skin of someone with rosacea under a microscope, it would show swelling, dilated blood vessels, and, where red bumps known as papules are present, you would see collections of white blood cells. People with rosacea often experience periods of remission and exacerbation. As with acne Because of its acne-like effects on personal appearance, rosacea can cause significant psychological and social problems in people who do not know what to do about it. Surveys performed by the National Rosacea Society showed that nearly 70 percent of people with rosacea have lower self-confidence and self-esteem, and 41 percent reported that it had caused them to avoid public contact or cancel social engagements. Among those with severe symptoms, nearly 70 percent said the disorder had adversely affected their professional interactions, and nearly 30 percent said they had even missed work because of their condition. ROSACEA 101: A BASIC GUIDE report by Holly of the Cosmetic Connection Product Panel So, you have rosacea. Or maybe you just think you might. Now what? Suddenly your own skin seems foreign to you. It's red and bumpy where it used to be smooth and clear. Your old skincare staples don't seem to work anymore. That cleanser you've always loved is starting to burn and sting. What's a girl to do? You're not alone. It is estimated that up to 20 percent of the population suffers from rosacea. In its mildest form, rosacea causes prominent redness in the cheeks, giving the impression that the affected person is chronically blushing. Further along, it can cause papules (red solid bumps) or pustules (pus-filled bumps, often mistaken for acne, but unresponsive to acne treatments). Regardless of the stage, once rosacea comes on the scene, old skincare regimens go out the window. Is there any one regimen that works for everyone? Of course not. But staying informed and following some basic guidelines will help you make the right decisions for your skin. Where do I turn for help?

Blushing, flushing and rosacea
Being embarrassed and going red can be, well, embarrassing. Some people are prone to facial flushes and this condition is commonly known as rosacea. iVillagers discuss the symptoms, and help one member find a solution. advertisement This may sound strange but it is really getting me down and has knocked my self-confidence a great deal. For many years I've been too shy to do anything about it - I thought it was just my age, but I'm older now and I'm still suffering with face flushes. I used to think it was because I was shy, but I knew I shouldn't be going red just for saying `hi' to someone or talking to people. I find it very uncomfortable! I would love any professional help or advice from anyone who suffers the same as me. Sounds like you may suffer from rosacea - a condition that can be categorized into two forms: `intermittent', known as blushing or `permanent', known as flushing. It's caused by the dilation of small blood vessels in the surface of the skin of the face. It generally occurs around the cheekbone area but can be also appear over the cheek area, chin and nose. Triggers include embarrassment, temperature change, alcohol and ultraviolet radiation. Have a look at

Return to Federal Citizen Information Center Home Page Questions and Answers About Rosacea This booklet contains general information about rosacea (ro-ZAY-she-ah). It defines rosacea and describes its symptoms, possible causes, and treatments. If you have further questions after reading this booklet, you may wish to discuss them with your doctor. What Is Rosacea? Rosacea is a chronic (long-term) disease that affects the skin and sometimes the eyes. The disorder is characterized by redness, pimples, and, in advanced stages, thickened skin. Rosacea usually affects the face; other parts of the upper body are only rarely involved. Who Gets Rosacea? Approximately 14 million people in the United States have rosacea. It most often affects adults between the ages of 30 and 60. Rosacea is more common in women (particularly during menopause) than men. Although rosacea can develop in people of any skin color, it tends to occur most frequently and is most apparent in people with fair skin. What Does Rosacea Look Like?

Blepharitis Blepharitis is an extremely common, but under-recognized , cause of simple, chronic eye discomfort. Symptoms of blepharitis include mild ocular irritation often described as a sandy or gritty sensation which may be worse in the morning . The eyes may feel tired or burning . There may be crusting of the eyelids with increased mattering , and the eyelid margins may appear red and inflamed . To understand how to treat blepharitis , one must understand how this condition develops. Associated with each of the eyelashes are skin oil glands , called Meibomian glands , which continuously produce an oily substance which normally coats the tear film and prevents evaporation of the tear surface . However , if this oily substance is not regularly cleaned with simple soap and water solutions , waxy deposits may buid-up on the eyelid margins . These waxy crusts are a nutritional source for common skin bacteria which can produce heavy bacterial colonies on the eyelid margins. Bacterial toxins can cause both inflammation of the eyelid margins , and because they get into the tear film , lead to ocular irritation , sometimes triggering an allergic corneal ulceration . The bacteria also breakdown a fatty substance , termed meibum , into fatty acids which also act as an ocular irritant . Moreover , the Meibomian gland orifices can be plugged leading to meibomianitis or the formation of sties , termed '

    What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that comes and goes and is often mistaken for acne. It can cause red patches, lines, and small pimples on the face, as well as burning and irritation in the eyes and eyelids. If treated early, the flare-ups may be minor and controlled fairly well with medication and lifestyle changes. Left untreated, rosacea can progress and eventually cause larger, disfiguring bumps on the nose and face and serious eye problems. Fair-skinned people between the ages of 30 and 60 are most likely to develop rosacea. Fewer men than women have rosacea, but men usually have more severe symptoms.

    Ocular Rosacea
Ocular rosacea is a contraindication for refractive surgery until treated and managed. Having refractive surgery with ocular rosacea is not wise. Rosacea can be a combination of skin symptoms including redness of the face, flushing, the presence of small blood vessels ("broken" blood vessels), acne, occasional surface irregularities of the nose (called rhinophyma), and symptoms of redness or when it affects the eyes it is called ocular rosacea. Ocular rosacea can leave the eyes feeling irritated and "gritty". Patients may experience redness, tearing or crusting on the lashes. Many mistakenly think they have allergies. Use of prescription steroid based eye drops will usually help improve this condition. More severe cases may require oral tetracycline or minocin.
