The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy
Cat Welfare Trust
Registered Charity No. 800719
PLEASE SUPPORT OUR RESEARCH PROJECTS The second project was undertaken by Dr Matthew Binns of the Animal Health Trust which has been involved in the production of genome maps and is working on similar projects for horses and dogs. These maps are an essential tool for the study of genetics in any species and now much of this work on the feline map has been completed in the United States. Dr Binns' work of identifying specific markers will enable researchers to produce information about inherited feline diseases and enable such problems to be identified by a simple blood test. Programmes can now be developed for the elimination of the condition from the breed in the most positive and caring way. The work on the genome map and the following research will take time and funding from other sources but it is the Cat Welfare Trust grant which has enabled the work to commence. The Trustees have supported the Genetics Project for two years and this has enabled Dr Binns to produce a 'blueprint' which can now be used to facilitate work on genetic conditions. Dr Binns has set up a Genetics Working Group with feline veterinary interests from around the country represented on it. This Group will be able to provide additional support for the work and co-ordinate the collection of information on specific diseases. The search for a THIRD project is progressing well. All the veterinary colleges and other relevant organisations were contacted and asked to supply the Trust with an outline of any project they would like to have considered for funding. The applications have all been considered and one project has been shortlisted but the new project needs more funding than the Trust can raise. The Trustees and the Applicant hope that the balance of the funding will be available early in 2004 to enable the first two years' work to start.

Welcome to AvaBarber.com!!!!! Howdy Everybody Well, it's a New Year, actually it's the second month of a New Year. I hope all of you had a Merry Christmas, and that you're having a great New Year. Roger and I have been doing pretty good. Roger has had some health problems, but he's doing fine now. His main artery was blocked 95%. It was discovered in April, but on the positive side, we found a great doctor, David Cox, and he went in there and put a stent in, so Roger's doing great. He has to watch his diet as far as eating a lot of fatty things that could clog up his arteries, but as you know, Roger is a little guy, he weighs 134 soaking wet, it's me with the weight problem. Anyway, lets don't talk about that, it depresses me. Ha! Ha! We're still "slinging the hash" as they say in the restaurant business. Still part owner of a sandwich shop called "Steamboats". As you know, the "Lawrence Welk Reruns" have been renewed until 2005, and I was fortunate enough to do a wrap around as they say hosting a rerun. It will be aired May 1st, 2004 by my schedule, and I will be telling you all about "Steamboats" and will even show you what our sandwiches look like. It will make your mouth water!!!! In between working at the sandwich shop I still get a chance to perform, and do what I love best of all singing. Brian Edward, this promoter out of Canada, takes the "Live Lawrence Welk Show" out on tour two times a year a Christmas tour, and a Spring tour. The cast consists of: Ralna English, Mary Lou Metzger, Jack Imel, Dick Dale, and Big Tiny Little, and myself. We have a lot of fun on these tours. Mary Lou produces the show on the tours, she does a great job. We had been having problems finding a consistent Road and Stage manager, so Mary Lou suggested that we use Roger, so December was Roger's first tour, he did a great job, so he's on the road with us too. So we are real happy about that.
