A variety of fungal infections of the skin, scalp and nails fall under the general category of ringworm. (The name ringworm, which dates from the 15th century, is a misnomer; no worm is involved and the rash is not always circular.) The fungi that cause ringworm can be found almost everywhere. As a result, ringworm infections are particularly common among children in day care and in the early school years. Once ringworm sets in, it nourishes itself by absorbing the dead, protein-rich material called keratin that comprises the outer layer of skin. Although it is not dangerous, ringworm can make a child very uncomfortable by causing itchiness and sometimes painful fissures in the skin. Ringworm of the scalp is also often quite unsightly since it causes the loss of hair in patches. WHAT CAUSES RINGWORM?
The infectious organisms that cause ringworm fungi are known as dermatophytes. The types that most commonly affect children are: Tinea corporis
(the classic ringworm of body skin). This infection is marked by circular, scaly lesions with clear skin in the center. The lesions are most common on the arms or the trunk of the body, and they grow as the fungus depletes the nutrient supply on the skin surface within the circle. Tinea corporis occurs most frequently in young boys.

What Is Ringworm?
Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungus that can affect the scalp, skin, fingers, toe nails or foot.
Who Gets Ringworm?
Anyone can get ringworm. Children may be more susceptible to certain varieties of ringworm than adults.
How Are Ringworm Infections Spread?
Transmission of these fungal agents can occur by direct skin-to-skin contact with infected people or pets, or indirectly by contact with items such as barber clippers, hair from infected people, shower stalls or floors.
What Are The Symptoms Of Ringworm Infections?
Ringworm of the scalp usually begins as a small pimple which becomes larger in size leaving scaly patches of temporary baldness. Infected hairs become brittle and break off easily. Occasionally, yellowish cup-like crusty areas are seen. With ringworm of the nails, the affected nails become thicker, discolored and brittle, or it will become chalky and disintegrate. Ringworm of the body appears as flat, spreading ring-shaped areas. The edge is reddish and may be either dry and scaly or moist and crusted. As it spreads, the center area clears and appears normal. Ringworm of the foot appears as a scaling or cracking of the skin especially between the toes.

RINGWORM AND LUFENURON By: Carol W. Johnson, DVM PhD Microsporum canis, the most common cause of ringworm, is a parasitic fungus that is highly adapted to cats. Once introduced into a cattery, ringworm can rapidly spread and can infect most or all of the cats in a cattery before the breeder is aware that there even is a problem. In an infected cattery, the lesions often appear to resolve in adult cats after several months and kittens often will no longer show lesions as they approach maturity. In most cases, however, these cats still harbor low levels of fungus and serve to infect the kittens that are born into a cattery. Some of the biggest impediments to all catteries becoming ringworm-free has been the expense of treatment and the limited safety of the less expensive drugs. Griseofulvin (Fulvicin) is inexpensive and moderately effective against ringworm, but causes severe neutropenia and immunosuppression that can be fatal in up to 10% of the treated cats. Itraconazole (Sporonox) is much more effective and safer, but can cost up to $200 to treat a cat. Those of us who claim a ringworm-free cattery have often had to spend thousands of dollars to maintain that status and treatment of a large cattery is often beyond the economic ability of some breeders.

Ringworm of the Scalp or Beard
Topic Overview
What is ringworm of the scalp or beard? Ringworm is an infection caused by a fungus that grows on the outer layer of the skin, hair, or nails. Ringworm of the scalp occurs in children and adults all over the world. It is most common in children between the ages of 3 and 9. Ringworm of the beard is uncommon. The medical term for fungal infections is tinea, followed by a word that describes the location of infection. For example, tinea capitis (which means scalp) is ringworm of the scalp and tinea barbae is ringworm of the beard. What does ringworm of the scalp or beard look like? Ringworm of the scalp or beard often appears as round or oval patches of baldness or scaly skin. Typically, the circular patches spread along its outer borders while clearing at the centre, giving it a ringed appearance and the name "ringworm." However, this pattern is not always seen. Other times, ringworm simply resembles dandruff and can be confused with

Ringworm
Ringworm is a contagious infection that usually affects the scalp, the feet (athlete's foot), the groin, or the nails, but it can affect any part of the body.  It comes from a fungus transmitted by humans and animals, not from worms!  People get ringworm from direct skin-to-skin contact with another infected person or a pet or by indirect contact with an object or surface that an infected person or pet has touched.   Ringworm is generally easily treated with over-the-counter or prescription anti-fungal medicines.  To prevent the spread of ringworm, make sure all infected persons and pets get appropriate treatment, avoid contact with infected persons and pets, do not share personal items (especially towels or bedding, clothing, hairbrushes, stuffed animals, etc.), clean all clothing or objects that have come into contact with the fungus, and keep common-use areas clean.   Ringworm of the scalp usually begins as a small pimple that becomes larger, leaving scaly patches of temporary baldness. Infected hairs become brittle and break off easily. Yellowish crusty areas sometimes develop.  Ringworm of the body looks like a flat, round patch anywhere on the skin except for the scalp and feet. The groin is a common area of infection. As the rash gradually expands, its center clears to produce a ring. More than one patch might appear, and the patches can overlap. The area is sometimes itchy.

Ringworm
Ringworm (or tinea) is a skin infection that is caused by a fungus. Ringworm gets its name from the raised circular pattern that the infection forms on the skin. Ringworm on the body begins as a ring-shaped, flat rash. Gradually the ring becomes larger and spreads, with the inside of the ring clearing. The outside of the ring can be either dry and scaly or wet and crusted. Ringworm may affect:
  • The SCALP. Ringworm starts as a small pimple that grows larger and creates patches of dry, bald skin. The hair can become brittle and break off. The FINGERNAILS. If the nail bed becomes infected, it can become thick and brittle, or it can turn powdery and crumble. The FEET. Ringworm causes dry, cracked skin, most often between the toes.

It covers what ringworm is, where it comes from, how to recognize it, and how to deal with it Ringworm is a fungus that can infect your skin, nails, and hair. The fungus is found in the soil and is contagious from both direct and indirect contact. You can get it from other people or from domestic animals particularly young puppies and kittens. Children often get ringworm this way. Ringworm of the scalp usually occurs in children. It causes areas of scaly skin, and partial hair loss that is usually temporary. Ringworm of the feet is commonly called athlete’s foot and usually occurs in adolescence and adults. It causes scaly skin between the toes and elsewhere on the feet. Ringworm of the skin affects all ages and causes small raised areas that gradually enlarge in a ring shape leaving normal skin in the center. Sometimes, other conditions can be confused with ringworm. Ringworm of the scalp can be confused with eczema and psoriasis. Ringworm of the skin may look like eczema and ringworm of the feet may look like shoe dermatitis but these conditions don't usually involve the webs between the toes, and ringworm often does. Here is what you should do if you suspect ringworm. If you notice the symptoms of

Baby Health : Ringworm is easy to treat Ringworm is easy to treat Is your child exhibiting symptoms of ringworm? Don't panic. Doctors say that up to 15 percent of American children under age 10 will have the scalp infection. "The infections are a common problem in childhood but, luckily, are relatively easy to treat," says Dr Robin Carder, assistant professor of dermatology at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. The infection is caused by a fungus, despite what its name might indicate. The most common fungus strain causing scalp ringworm in the United States is spread from person-to-person contact, Dr Carder says. A much less common scalp-ringworm strain can be contracted from pets, usually cats. "Symptoms of scalp ringworm include itchy, scaling, pimple-like bumps and temporary, patchy hair loss," says Dr Carder. "If intense scalp inflammation lingers a long time, scarring and permanent hair loss can occur, but this is uncommon. Some children also develop enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, also temporary. Some people have no symptoms at all." Treatments consist of oral anti-fungal medicines prescribed by a doctor. Anti-fungal shampoos such as selenium sulfide and ketoconazole can help prevent spread of the fungus. To help prevent infection, don't share hairbrushes, combs and hats, Dr Carder says.

Our Story
We brought Lilith and Tallulah home from the Pet Shop at 7 weeks old, and we left them pretty much alone for the first few days, to get used to their new surroundings. So it was about a week later that I was holding Tallulah and I noticed she had a scabby lump on her head between her ears. There was no hair loss that I could see. I took her immediately to the vet, and he checked for mites, but ruled that out. We wondered whether she had been bitten by Lilith while they were settling down together. So I went home with an antiseptic wash. Two days later some more crusting appeared on Tallulah's cheek. She went straight back to the vet, who still wasn't sure what it was. [With hindsight I think maybe he should have recognised it]. Lilith had no symptoms at this stage. The vet decided to do a biopsy on the lumps on Tallulah to help the diagnosis. To do this he had to give her a little anaesthetic gas. You can imagine the distress this caused us, as she was only 8 weeks old, and the trauma could have killed her. Fortunately she survived, but had to have half her head shaved and 4 stitches in her head and cheek. The lump was immediately cultured and within a couple of days the culture turned purple and emphatically revealed that Tallulah had ringworm. The day after this diagnosis Lilith began losing hair around her right eye....

Are there any prescription treatments for ringworm?
Ringworm is a skin infection caused by different types of fungus. Some cases of ringworm don't go away with over-the-counter antifungal treatments . And when ringworm is on the scalp, it's hard to cure with creams and ointments. In these cases, your doctor may prescribe shampoos containing selenium sulfide (brand name Selsun) or oral antifungal medicines such as griseofulvin ( Fulvicin U/F ), fluconazole ( Diflucan ), terbinafine ( Lamisil ), or itraconazole ( Sporanox ). These drugs cure ringworm in up to 80 percent of people who use them. Doctors tailor the treatment of ringworm to the severity of the infection and the type of fungus causing the infection.
