A-Z Children's Ailments
Ringworm by Dr Trisha Macnair What is it? Symptoms Further help What is it? Ringworm is the common name given to a group of fungal infections of the skin, hair and nails. Despite the name it has nothing to do with worms. The proper medical name for these infections is Tinea, and this is often followed by the Latin name for the affected part of the body. For example, Tinea pedis affects the feet (also called Athletes Foot), Tinea corporis affects the body and Tinea capitis affects the scalp. What causes it? Ringworm or Tinea is caused by infection with a fungi, mostly by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. Spores of the fungus may be picked up from another person, the soil or environment, from an animal (eg. cats or dogs) or from household objects. Who is affected?

RINGWORM IN DOGS
What is ringworm, and what causes it?
Ringworm is a skin disease caused by a fungus (plural: fungi). Because the lesions are often circular, it was once thought to be caused by a worm curling up in the tissue. However, there is no truth to that; it has nothing to do with a worm.
There are four fungal species affecting dogs which can cause the disease that we call ringworm. These may also affect humans. The fungi live in hair follicles and cause the hair shafts to break off at the skin line. This usually results in round patches of hair loss. As the fungus multiplies, the lesions may become irregularly shaped and spread over the dog's body.
How long does it take to get it?
The incubation period is 10-12 days. This means that following exposure to the fungus, about 10-12 days will pass before any lesions occur.
How is ringworm diagnosed?
A. Diagnosis is made in one of three ways:
B. Identification of the typical "ringworm" lesions on the skin
C. Fluorescence of infected hairs under a special light (however, only two or the four species of fungi fluoresce)
D. Culture of the hair for the fungus. The last method is the most accurate, but it may take up to 2-3 weeks for the culture to become positive.

Fungal Infection on the Body
Ringworm, known in medical terms as tinea corporis, is actually not caused by a worm, but by a fungus. Tinea corporis refers to a fungal infection of the body or face, not including the beard area on men. Ringworm occurs more commonly in warm, tropical environments, affects men and women equally, and affects all ages equally.

Ringworm What is ringworm? Ringworm is a very familiar term to most cat owners but it’s one of those slightly perplexing words. We know it’s something to do with the skin and something to do with ring shaped lesions but, confusingly, it’s got absolutely nothing to do with little wriggling worms. Ringworm is caused by a group of highly specialised fungi which live on the skin surface. One species of fungus is responsible for over 90 % of feline ringworm infections in this country. How does my cat catch ringworm? Cats are considered to be the natural host for this parasitic fungus and transmission is primarily direct from one cat to another. Fungi release vast numbers of spores into their surroundings so infection can also be contracted from a contaminated environment. What signs does an infected cat show? Can people be infected? Ringworm is a disease with zoonotic potential which means it can be transmitted from animals to man. As with cats, the fungus usually requires a pre-existing skin injury or condition to allow it to penetrate the surface. It tends to cause itchy, scaly lesions in people. On occasions, the development of a rash on the owner may be the first indication that a cat has ringworm. On the whole, ringworm is an easily treatable problem in people but care must be taken to prevent the very young, the very old or the immunosuppressed becoming infected.

What is ringworm?
Ringworm is an infection of the skin which is caused by several types of fungi. The scalp, feet, groin, fingernails or toenails can also be affected. Who is susceptible to ringworm? Anyone can get ringworm. Children are more susceptible to certain types of the ringworm fungi, while other types occur equally in all age groups. Ringworm involving the nails is more likely to occur following an injury to the nails. What are the signs and symptoms of ringworm? Ringworm of the body usually consists of a flat, roundish lesion, the edge of which may be dry and scaly or moist and crusted. As the lesion expands, the center portion often clears to a normal appearance. Ringworm of the scalp typically begins as a small pimple which expands with time, leaving scaly patches of temporary baldness. Infected hairs become brittle and break off easily. Occasionally, raised moist and draining lesions can occur. When finger/toe nails are affected, the nails become thickened, discolored, and brittle, or they may become chalky and disintegrate with time. How is ringworm spread?

Q:
My 19-year-old son wrestles in school. He now has ringworm. What exactly is this and what can be done to prevent it? How contagious is it?
A: "Ringworm" is an infection of the skin caused by fungus. It's a red and scaly rash in the shape of a circle or ring (hence the name), commonly on the arms, legs or neck. Most common in children, ringworm is "caught" by coming in direct contact with the fungus on pets, other people, or the soil. Anti-fungal creams will clear up the rash over 80% of the time. Tinea Infections: Athlete's Foot, Jock Itch and Ringworm What is tinea? Tinea is a fungus that can grow on your skin, hair or nails. As it grows, it spreads out in a circle, leaving normal-appearing skin in the middle. This makes it look like a ring. At the edge of the ring, the skin is lifted up by the irritation and looks red and scaly. To some people, the infection looks like a "worm" is under the skin. Because of the way it looks, tinea infection is often called "ringworm." There really isn't a worm under the skin, though. How did I get tinea? One of every five persons gets a fungus infection at some time. You can get a fungus infection by touching a person who has one. Some kinds of fungus live on damp surfaces, like the floors in public showers or locker rooms. You can easily pick up a fungus there. You can even catch a fungus infection from one of your pets. Dogs and cats, as well as farm animals, can be infected with a fungus. Often this infection looks like a patch of skin where fur is missing. What areas of the body are affected by tinea infections?

Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Skin conditions Ringworm Originally Published: March 21, 1997 Dear Alice, I have obtained ringworm from my kitten! What is the best treatment for me to get rid of it and stop the itching? Before Alice addresses ringworm treatment options, let her first briefly describe ringworm. Ringworm is a skin disease that is not caused by worms, but by fungus. You can have ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis) and of the body's hairless skin (tinea corporis). Fungus can also infect toenails and feet (also known as athlete's foot read Athlete's Foot and More on athlete's foot in Alice's General Health archives for more information). Ringworm is contagious. Basically, ringworm is transmitted via fungal agents by direct skin-to-skin contact with infected individuals and pets (your cat, for instance), and by indirect contact with personal items used by infected individuals, such as hai r, combs, brushes, hats, bedsheets, hairpins, floors, and bathtubs. Considering the contagious and infectious nature of ringworm, anyone is susceptible. It does not discriminate, although children and adults seem to be more prone to infection by differing kinds of ringworm. In addition, athletes participating in contact sports, such as wrestling and football, are at higher risk. Appropriate precautions must be taken to avoid infection, spread, and reinfection, such as showering after each sports play, regularly washing contacted surfaces, laundering clothes after every sports activity, avoiding clothes- and towel-sharing, and being aware of who is infected on the team.

Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection of the skin that has nothing to do with worms. It can be itchy, but it's not painful or dangerous. It's the same fungus that causes athlete's foot, jock itch, and toenail fungus. In young children it most often affects only the torso or scalp. If your child has ringworm on his torso, he'll have a rash of one or several red rings, usually ranging from dime to quarter size, on his chest, stomach, thighs, or back. The rings are usually crusty or scaly on the outside and smooth in the center. As the fungus grows the rings get larger. When the fungus affects the scalp it usually appears as dandruff or bald spots . They can be dry and crusty, or moist and filled with pus. It's easy to confuse ringworm of the scalp with dandruff. How did my toddler get ringworm?
