RINGWORM
Photo of ringworm at bottom of page What causes ringworm?
Although the name suggests a parasitic type of worm as the culprit, it is actually caused by two common, and harmless, fungi called Trichophyton and Microsporum. Where did my child catch it from?
The fungi in the rash are contagious by direct contact with the rash or from the hands of an infected person who has been scratching the rash. Your child can also catch it from infected pets, especially dogs and cats. What does ringworm look like?
The lesions are round and slightly red, with a border of small scales, blisters, or bumps. The lesions are well demarcated, which means there is a very sharp border between the infected and normal skin. The center is often clear, almost normal appearing, skin. The lesions vary in size from dime-sized up to several inches across. It is usually found on the face, trunk or limbs. Several close lesions can merge together, forming a multi-lobed appearance. Ringworm, tinea capitis - close-up In the scalp, fungal infections often form circular, scaly, inflamed patches. Frequently, there can be temporary hair loss (hair returns when infection clears but if treatment is delayed and scarring results, permanent hair loss can be seen). KidsHealth
Parents Infections Fungal Infections (Ringworm, Yeast, etc.)
Signs and Symptoms:
The term "tinea" is a general name referring to a group of related fungal skin infections. Tinea can affect most skin sites, depending on the specific fungal type. Tinea pedis is the medical name for "athlete's foot"; Tinea cruris is "jock itch"; Tinea capitis is "ringworm" of the scalp; and tinea corporis is "ringworm" of the body and nails. These descriptive terms refer to the location of the infection and not which specific type of fungus is involved. Fungal infections of the scalp may appear as patchy areas with dandruff-like scaling and hair loss (with broken stubbles of hair). Sometimes, there may be a swollen, inflammed mass known as a "kerion" which may be confused with impetigo or cellulitis . The classical features of tinea are itching, redness on the skin and a circular patchy lesion that spreads along its borders, at the same time clearing at the center. In time, it may appear as a ring or a series of rings around a clear center, hence its name "ringworm." This pattern may not always be seen in every infected person. Additional signs or symptoms depend on which site is infected, and how advanced the disease is. On the palms or soles, redness may be the only sign; sometimes, on the soles, there may be deep seated blisters which, over time, dry and end up as brown crusts. Between the toes there may be thick, white scaling. Nails can turn thick and white, and eventually crumble if untreated. On the scalp, there may be hair loss as the hairs break off at their shafts - "black dot ringworm."

Teens Infections
Although the words ringworm, jock itch , and athlete's foot may sound funny, if you're a teen with one of these skin infections, you're probably not laughing. If you've ever had one, you know that any of these infections can produce some pretty unpleasant symptoms. The good news is that tinea, the name for this category of common skin infections, is generally easy to treat. Read on to learn more about ringworm. The Basics on Tineal Infections Tinea (pronounced: tih -nee-uh) is the medical name for a group of related skin infections, including athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm. These infections are caused by several types of mold-like fungi called dermatophytes (pronounced: der- mah -tuh-fites) that live on the dead tissues of the skin, hair, and nails. What Is Ringworm? Ringworm, which isn't a worm at all, can affect the skin, nails , or scalp. The medical name for ringworm of the scalp is tinea capitis; ringworm of the body is called tinea corporis; and ringworm of the nails is called tinea unguium. Ringworm of the skin starts as a red, scaly patch or bump. Over time, it may begin to look like a ring or a series of rings with raised bumpy borders around a clear center. This ring pattern gave ringworm its name, but not every person who's infected develops the rings.

Ringworm (tinea) can affect many parts of the body, particularly the groin and scalp. Symptoms It is most noticeable on bare skin when it is known as ringworm due to its characteristic appearance as a circular patch of red, itchy skin, which gradually increases in size. There may also be red, itchy areas around the base of hair shafts. With scratching, these areas can bleed and become crusted with blood. Causes It is not a worm, simply a fungus (tinea). Prevention Keep the area well ventilated and dry. Use a separate face cloth and towel - ringworm is infectious. Complications Bacterial infection from scratching is common. What is ringworm? Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungus that can affect the scalp, skin, fingers, toe nails or foot. Who gets ringworm? Anyone can get ringworm. Children may be more susceptible to certain types of ringworm than adults. How are ringworm infections spread? Transmission of these fungal agents can occur by direct skin-to-skin contact with infected people or pets, or indirectly by contact with items such as barber clippers, hair from infected people, shower stalls or floors. What are the symptoms of ringworm infections? Ringworm of the scalp usually begins as a small pimple which becomes larger in size and leaves scaly patches of temporary baldness. Infected hairs become brittle and break off easily. Occasionally, yellowish cuplike crusty areas are seen. With ringworm of the nails, the affected nails become thicker, discolored and brittle, or they become chalky and disintegrate. Ringworm of the body appears as flat, spreading ring-shaped areas. The edge is reddish and may be either dry and scaly or moist and crusted. As it spreads, the center area clears and appears normal. Ringworm of the foot appears as a scaling or cracking of the skin, especially between the toes. How soon do symptoms appear?

Ringworm
What is ringworm?
Ringworm is a rash caused by a fungus that has infected your skin. (Despite its name, this rash is not caused by a worm or parasite.)
How does it occur?
Ringworm is spread by contact with an infected person or infected surface, such as clothes, towels, and bedding. It is more common among people participating in sports that involve a lot of contact with other people, such as wrestling. Children going to day care and people living in crowded conditions are also more likely to get ringworm. Ringworm on the skin is called tinea corporis. When ringworm is on the feet, it is called tinea pedis, and when it is on the scalp, it is called tinea capitis.

What is ringworm?
Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungus. The infection causes a rash that may have a ring-shape with a raised edge. It can be quite itchy and flaky. When the scalp is infected, there is often an area of baldness. Fungal infections of the feet are usually very itchy and cause cracking between the toes. How is ringworm transmitted?
Ringworm spreads from person to person by touch. When someone with ringworm touches or scratches the rash, the fungus sticks to the fingers or gets under the fingernails. The fungus is then spread when that person touches someone else. Ringworm of the scalp can also spread if combs and hairbrushes are shared. How is it treated?
Ringworm can be cured with medication. Some medications are taken by mouth. Others are ointments or creams that are spread on the infected area. What can parents do?
  • Check your child for signs of ringworm if another child has it. Look for the typical circular rash on the child's head or skin. Contact your physician if you think your child has ringworm.

Ringworm in Cats
Ringworm is a skin disease caused by a fungus (plural: fungi). Because the lesions are often circular, ringworm was once thought to be caused by a worm curling up in the tissue. Ringworm has nothing to do with any type of worm. Ringworm is also known as dermatophytosis . There are four species of fungi that can cause dermatophytosis in cats; it is most often caused by the organism called microsporum canis Microsporum canis is so well adapted to cats that up to 20% of cats are thought to be asymptomatic carriers, meaning they have the organism but show no outward signs.

Sheep exhibitors, as you prepare for summer shows, examine how you prepare your sheep for the show ring. Washing and shearing removes the natural lanolin and suint that protects sheep from getting some diseases. Anyone who shows sheep this summer should be aware of ringworm and a ringworm-like disease that can be transmitted from infected sheep to humans. One ringworm type disease, caused by a fungus, is currently being called "club lamb" fungus. Ringworm of animals is caused by two genera of fungiMicrosporum and Trichophyton. In most cases, these fungi are obligate parasites of the skin and hair (wool). They are highly contagious from animal to animalparticularly in dense population conditions. The infections not only transmit readily to other animals, but they often transmit to human attendants of the animals and cause severe skin lesions. When animal dermatophytes infect humans, the disease is usually more severe clinically than the corresponding disease in their normal animal host. Acute inflammatory skin lesions may develop that are accompanied by scar formation. The past couple of years, we have had outbreaks appear to be present where show-fitted sheep have become infected and are readily transmitting the infection to other sheep (at home and in the show arena) and to human attendants. Sheep that are extensively groomed and bathed seem to be more susceptible to infection. The causative fungus appears to be a Trichophyton sp. that may be related to a variety of T. verrucosum. Infection results from direct contact with infected animals as well as by indirect contact through clippers, brushes, combs, blankets and contaminated pens. Unless vigorously disinfected, these materials may remain infectious for several years.

After leading the Cleveland metal scene for a good portion of this past decade Ringworm is ready to unleash their wrath on the rest of the world. Their Victory Records debut, "Birth is Pain", will vanquish all doubters and skeptics of the sheer power of this band of Cleveland malcontents. If Charles Manson was into hardcore metal this would be his band. Ringworm was, in truth, a part of the Victory family even before they signed. It was a natural and welcome transition. Featuring former members of Integrity, the band were no strangers to Victory. Even some of Victory's biggest names have been huge supporters of Ringworm. They have consistently been invited to perform with Victory mainstays Hatebreed, Blood for Blood, and Skarhead. Ringworm's latest CD, "Birth is Pain" is truly an epic story of human struggle. The album tells the story of the most grueling human battle of all, internal conflict. The album puts forth the tale surrounding the struggle of man versus himself that has, throughout history, brought entire civilizations to their knees. Ringworm conquers that internal struggle, exorcises humanity1s demons and rises from the filth as the last hope for society.

(Tinea)
All that's ringy is not ringworm. What does the term "ringworm" mean?
The term "ringworm" refers to fungal infections that are on the surface of the skin. (The early belief was that the infection was due to a worm, which it is not, although the name has stuck.) Some of these fungi produce round spots, but many do not. On the other hand, many round spots are not fungus. A physical examination of the affected skin, evaluation of skin scrapings under the microscope, and culture tests can help doctors make the appropriate distinctions. A proper diagnosis is essential to successful treatment. The medical term for ringworm is "tinea." (Tinea gets us back to worms. Tinea is the Latin name for a growing worm.) Doctors add another word to indicate where the fungus is located. Tinea capitis, for instance, refers to scalp ringworm, tinea corporis to fungus of the body, tinea pedis to fungus of the feet, and so on. What causes ringworm?
