Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Vitamin D may be absorbed from food by the intestines or may be produced by the skin when the skin is exposed to sunlight. In its active form, vitamin D acts as a hormone to regulate calcium absorption from the intestine and to regulate levels of calcium and phosphate in the bones. Sunlight is important to skin production of vitamin D, and environmental conditions where sunlight exposure is limited may reduce this source of vitamin D. Lack of vitamin D production by the skin may occur with indoor confinement or working indoors during the daylight hours, or in climates with little exposure to sunlight. Because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, conditions that reduce digestion or absorption of

Back WHAT IS RICKETS ? First broadcast on www.provet.co.uk on September 21st 2000. This information is provided by Provet for educational purposes only. You should seek the advice of your veterinarian if your pet is ill as only he or she can correctly advise on the diagnosis and recommend the treatment that is most appropriate for your pet. Rickets is a term that is often used to describe skeletal abnormalities - but what does it mean ? Rickets is a condition that causes deformities - swelling of the joints and bending of the long bones in young growing animals. It is caused by :
  • Insufficient phosphorus in the diet - phosphorus is an important mineral which is a major component of bone along with calcium Insufficient vitamin D in the diet - vitamin D is needed for normal absorption of minerals from the intestine, and for the release of minerals from bone. Insufficient sunlight - many animals can make their own vitamin D if they are exposed to natural sunlight
So the disease is caused by a nutritional deficiency, or an inability to absorb nutrients from the intestine due to insufficient vitamin D.

BBC Takes A Cheap Shot At Islamic Dress Code By Dr. Rubina Khalid
Posted: 12 Zul-Qa'dah 1421, 6 February 2001 Rickets is a vitamin D deficiency disease of the children. In most cases it happens to children 2 years of age or younger. While there are ample dietary sources of vitamin D available, our bodies can also manufacture this vitamin when exposed to sun, in a process, called photolysis. There is a connection between dress and disease, but it is exactly opposite of the one claimed by BBC. There are 40,000 new cases of skin cancer every year in the UK; more than a million in the USA. What needs to be highlighted is that, like it or not, most of these people could have avoided this tragedy, had they followed the Islamic dress code. While modesty itself is priceless and moral values cannot be subjected to cost/benefit analysis, Muslim women have special reason to be thankful to God for their dress code that also protects them from this deadly fate. The Islamic dress code protects us from all harmful objects, from unwanted gazes to ultraviolet light. It is good for the soul, good for the morals, and good for the body.

Rickets
A disorder involving softening and weakening of the bones of children, primarily caused by lack of vitamin D and/or lack of calcium or phosphate. Alternative names: osteomalacia in children; deficiency - vitamin D; renal osteodystrophy; pediatric osteomalacia; vitamin D deficiency; renal rickets The pathogenesis of nutritional rickets is not well-understood. While the etiologies include deficiencies of vitamin D, calcium (Ca) or phosphate (PO4), and perhaps aluminium toxicity, the role these nutrients play in the development of tissue level anomalies characteristic of rachitic cartilage and bone has yet to be defined. Rickets is a disorder caused by insufficiency or inefficient action of activated vitamin D in the body during childhood, a lack of vitamin D in the diet or with malabsorption disorders characterized by poor fat absorption, including steatorrhea, sprue, and short bowel syndrome. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that may be absorbed from the intestines or may be produced by the skin when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet light (particularly sunlight). It is converted to its active form by the body in 2 steps, occurring first in the liver and completed in the kidneys. In its active form, vitamin D acts as a hormone to regulate calcium absorption from the intestine and to regulate levels of calcium and phosphate in the bones. Active vitamin D is assisted by the actions of other body hormones.

This disease involves softening and weakening of bones in children due to deficiency of Vitamin D. This softening occurs from a loss of the mineral calcium from the skeleton as a result of which bones become flexible and gradually are molded by forces, such as bearing weight, that are exerted on them. This condition could lead to deformities of the body structure.
Rickets is most likely to occur during periods of rapid growth, when the body demands high levels of calcium and phosphate. Rickets may be seen in young children 6 to 24 months old and is uncommon in newborns.

Rickets resurgence: Disease makes a comeback
U.S. health officials say lack of sunlight and too little milk are contributing to a resurgence of rickets By Christy Oglesby CNNfyi ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Societal and environmental changes such as long commutes, smog and day care are contributing to the resurgence of childhood rickets a bone softening disease that health officials thought they had all but eliminated 70 years ago. Atlanta health officials have detected about 10 cases of the rare disease, said Dr. Norman Carvalho of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, a children's hospital. But there may be more, he said, because the disease's rarity may make it unrecognizable to physicians. And if doctors do ascertain that a patient has rickets, they are not required to report it to the state health department. Carvalho was the leader in a Georgia study on malnutrition that will appear in the April issue of the journal Pediatrics. The study, conducted from 1997 to 1999, found that about one in 200,000 children in Georgia is hospitalized with rickets.

  • XLH is also known as X-Linked Hypophosphatemia (sometimes also spelled as hypophosphataemia), X-Linked Hypophosphatemic Rickets, Familial Hypophosphatemia, Vitamin D-Resistant Rickets (VDRR) Rickets and even Genetic Rickets. Its notable characteristics are bowed legs, short stature, poor teeth formation and low blood phosphorus levels. XLH primarily affects bone and tooth development. The result is that the bone and teeth are not as strong as they should be. Affected individuals often have bowed legs, short stature and numerous tooth problems, often in the form of dental abscesses. Additionally abnormally low blood Phosphorus levels are often detected.

FROM Rickets and infants: Pediatricians at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C., and the University of North Carolina Medical School in Chapel Hill, examined the records of 30 infants found to have nutritional rickets between 1990 and 1999. Healthy people get the vitamin D they need partly from foods such as eggs, fish, green vegetables, and fortified milk and margarine and partly from vitamin D production in skin exposed to sunlight.

    Overview
When my doctor pointed out that I was at high risk for osteopenia because of my history of scoliosis and my thin build, I started reading everything I could about osteopenia and osteoporosis prevention and treatment. Out of the many books I looked at that are currently available on the subjects, the books reviewed below are the ones I found the most helpful. In the book Food and Our Bones the author focuses on osteoporosis, but she also also discusses bone health and bone density in general. The book Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis is also intended for people with osteoporosis, but since it covers a variety of bone density treatment factors such as diet, exercise programs, magnesium, calcium, vitamin K, vitamin D and zinc, it should also be valuable reading for people with any bone-related health condition such as osteopenia (a precursor condition to osteoporosis), osteomalacia and rickets.

This softening occurs from a loss of the mineral calcium from the skeleton, the bones become flexible and gradually are molded by forces, such as bearing weight, that are exerted on them. Deformities can then result. When Osteomalacia occurs in children, it is termed rickets. One of the two most common causes of Osteomalacia is a problem of fat malabsorption called steatorrhea. In this condition, the body is unable to absorb fats, and they are passed directly out the body in the stool. The result of this problem is that Vitamin D, which is usually absorbed with fat, and calcium are poorly absorbed. This poor absorption can be a result of digestive disorders. The other common cause of Osteomalacia is an increased amount of acid in the body fluids because kidney functions is faulty. Called tubular acidosis, this problem occurs in persons with congenital or acquired kidney disorders. In simple terms, this increased acid gradually dissolves the skeleton.

This fat-soluble vitamin occurs mainly in two forms: ergocalciferol (activated ergosterol, vitamin D ), found in irradiated yeast; and cholecalciferol (activated 7-dehydrocholesterol, vitamin D ), formed in human skin by exposure to sunlight (ultraviolet radiation) and found chiefly in fish liver oils and egg yolks. Milk is fortified with both forms. Synthesis in the skin is normally the major source. One microgram of vitamin D equals 40 IU. Vitamin D is a prohormone with several active metabolites that act as hormones. In the skin, previtamin D is synthesized photochemically from 7-dehydrocholesterol and is slowly isomerized to vitamin D , which is removed by vitamin D-binding protein. In the liver, vitamin D is converted to 25(OH)D , the major circulating form. It passes through the enterohepatic circulation and is reabsorbed from the gut. Principally in the kidneys, it is further hydroxylated to the much more metabolically active form, 1,25(OH)
