Persistent (Perennial) Rhinitis
Persistent rhinitis typically causes sneezing, and a blocked, itchy, and runny nose. It is usually due to an allergy. The common treatment is a steroid nose spray and/or antihistamine tablets. If you can avoid the cause of the allergy, it may be possible to prevent symptoms.
What is persistent (perennial) rhinitis?
  • Rhinitis means inflammation of the nose. Common symptoms include: sneezing, a blocked or congested nose, a watery discharge ('runny nose'), and an itchy nose. Less common symptoms include: sore throat, loss of smell, facial pains, headaches, and itchy and watery red eyes.
  • Persistent rhinitis means that symptoms occur for at least an hour a day on most days all through the year. (Perennial means 'throughout the year' and doctors often call this condition perennial rhinitis.)
The severity of symptoms can vary. Some people have mild irritation which comes and goes, and causes little trouble. Others become quite distressed by their regular symptoms. Many people with this condition say they have a 'persistent cold'. However, colds are due to virus infections, and normally only last a week or so. Persistent rhinitis is usually due to an allergy (although there are other causes - see below). Who gets persistent rhinitis?

What is allergic rhinitis?
Allergic rhinitis (often called hay fever) is an overreaction of the immune system to particles in the air that you breathe. The immune system normally protects the body from viruses and bacteria by producing antibodies to fight them. With allergic rhinitis, the immune system starts fighting essentially harmless substances, like dust mites and pollen ( allergens ), as though they were trying to attack your body. This overreaction (

Although allergic rhinitis is rarely life-threatening, its symptoms can cause extreme discomfort and impairment in the ability to function at work, school and leisure activities. In addition, untreated allergies lead to complications such as sinusitis, asthma, ear infections and dental malformations. It accounts for 3 percent of all physician visits; thus, one of every 33 office visits to all physicians for all diseases is for allergic rhinitis! What is allergic rhinitis?

Vasomotor Rhinitis
Q:
I was recently diagnosed with vasomotor rhinitis by an allergist. Also, I am allergic to mold and have food allergies from onions, rice and white potatoes, which cause my nose to swell and get stuffed up. Could you explain what he means by vasomotor rhinitis?
A: Rhinitis is an inflammation of the nose ("rhin" meaning nose, as in rhinosceros) which can be divided into a few basic types: infectious (as in a cold), allergic, and vasomotor. Allergic rhinitis can be seasonal and occur only when pollen counts are high, such as ragweed in late summer, or it can be perennial and last pretty much year round because of sensitivity to molds or dusts. Incidentally the mold counts are especially high right now because of the never-ending rain we've had recently. Vasomotor rhinitis is a poorly understood "wastebasket" term for people who have a stuffy or draining nose, but don't have evidence of specific allergies. The blood vessels (hence the term "vaso") in the linings of the nose appear to be extrasensitive and swell up for no good reason. Changes in the temperature or humidity, scents in the air, eating cold food, cigarette smoke, cooking odors, or emotional stress may all be triggers. Some medications, like reserpine and prazosin, have also been implicated. Sexual arousal or hormonal changes can also result in nasal congestion. Sneezing, which is common with allergic rhinitis, is usually not a prominent symptom with vasomotor rhinitis.

ALLERGIC RHINITIS ( HAY FEVER )
Symptoms of allergic rhinitis (Hay Fever) include itchy, runny, sneezy, or stuffy noses, and itchy eyes. Allergic rhinitis is a common illness affecting an estimated 20-40 million Americans, and resulting in 10 million lost days of school or work each year. Often caused by pollens from trees, grass or weeds, it is most commonly known as hay fever. Hay fever subsides with the onset of cold weather. Perennial allergic rhinitis, however, occurs year around and is caused by indoor allergens such as dust, mite, mold spores, and animal dander. What Causes Allergic Rhinitis? Chemical substances, such as histamine, are normally stored in mast cells in tissues of the body, including the nose and eyes. The allergic person forms antibodies against pollens and other allergens. These antibodies attach themselves to the mast cells, and when combined with the allergen the result is the release of histamine and other chemical substances from the mast cells. These chemical substances cause the allergic responses of itching, sneezing, congestion, and dripping. Treatment: Avoidance is the best treatment for any allergy whenever possible. Keeping doors and windows closed in the home and in your car and avoiding vigorous outside activity will help to lessen your exposure during times when the pollen count is high. Removing pets from the home and dust and mold control measures can significantly relieve symptoms due to perennial allergens.

A wide variety of substances can trigger allergy symptoms inpatients, and for each patient the list is different. Although allergies run in families, not everyone in the same family will be allergic to the same substances. Classic "hay fever" (seasonal allergies) are commonly caused by pollens and grasses, and tend to occur in the spring and/or fall. However, in California, where many plants bloom year-round, even pollen allergies can occur in the winter and summer. Perennial allergies are also commonly due to dusts, molds and animal hair/dander.
Allergic symptoms include: nasal stuffiness and/or clear, watery discharge; itchy, watery eyes; post-nasal drip, often with morning sore throats; hoarse voice; sinus headaches; cough; fatigue; and sometimes wheezing. Allergy patients may have any or all of these symptoms.
Not all patients with allergy-like symptoms will have true allergic rhinitis. Symptoms may be due to sensitivities (pollutants, chemicals, cold), infection, medications/drugs, or obstruction (polyps, deviated nasal septum). If a patient has persistent nasal sinus or eye symptoms, an exam by a physician/nurse practitioner is always in order. Sometimes, lab tests and even allergy skin testing is needed to make the proper diagnosis.

Rhinitis is inflammation of the mucous lining of the nose.
    Description
Rhinitis is a nonspecific term that covers infections, allergies , and other disorders whose common feature is the location of their symptoms. In rhinitis, the mucous membranes become infected or irritated, producing a discharge, congestion, and swelling of the tissues. The most widespread form of infectious rhinitis is the common cold The common cold is the most frequent viral infection in the general population, causing more absenteeism from school or work than any other illness. Colds are self-limited, lasting about 3-10 days, although they are sometimes followed by a bacterial infection. Children are more susceptible than adults; teenage boys more susceptible than teenage girls; and adult women more susceptible than adult men. In the United States, colds are most frequent during the late fall and winter.
    Causes and symptoms
Colds can be caused by as many as 200 different viruses. The viruses are transmitted by sneezing and coughing, by contact with soiled tissues or handkerchiefs, or by close contact with an infected person. Colds are easily spread in schools, offices, or any place where people live or work in groups. The incubation period ranges between 24 and 72 hours. The onset of a cold is usually sudden. The virus causes the lining of the nose to become inflamed and produce large quantities of thin, watery mucus. Children sometimes run a
