... Urological Conditions Rhinitis Rhinitis is not a disease; it is simply a term describing the symptoms produced by nasal irritation or inflammation. Symptoms of rhinitis include runny nose (rhinorrhea), itching (pruritus), sneezing and stuffy nose (blockage or congestion). These symptoms are the nose's natural response to inflammation and irritation. The nose normally produces mucus, which traps substances like dust, pollen, pollution, and germs such as bacteria and viruses. Mucus flows from the front of the nose to the back and is swallowed, but when mucus production is excessive, it can flow from the front (runny nose) or become noticeable from the back (post-nasal drip). Nasal mucus, normally a thin, clear liquid, can become thick or colored, perhaps due to dryness, infection, or pollution. When post-nasal drip is excessive, thick, or contains irritating substances, cough is the natural response for clearing the throat. Itching and sneezing are also natural responses to irritation caused by allergic reactions, chemical exposures (like cigarette smoke), temperature changes, infections and other factors.

Each year, millions of Americans suffer from one or more episodes of the common cold, flu (influenza), allergic rhinitis , and sinusitis . Allergic Rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis: Is a reaction to airborne (inhaled) allergens. Depending on the allergen, the resulting rhinitis and conjunctivitis may be seasonal such as hay fever or occurring year round (perennial allergic rhinitis). This disorder commonly affects young children and adolescents but can affect all age groups. Seasonal pollen allergy may exacerbate symptoms of perennial rhinitis. Cause: Hay fever results from wind borne pollens such as grass. and weeds as well as from mold (fungal spores) in the summer and fall perennial allergic rhinitis results from house dust, feather pillows, cigarette smoke, animal dander, and upholstery Symptoms: Hay fever: sneezing, profuse watery rhinorrhea, and nasal obstruction or congestion. Nose and eyes may itch Nasal mucosa may appear pale cyanotic and edematous Eyelids and conjunctivae may appear red and edematous Headache or sinus pain, dark circles under the eyes (allergic shiners) May experience itchy throat, malaise, and fever Perennial allergic rhinitis: chronic nasal obstruction often extending to eustachian tube obstruction, particularly in children, and dark circles under the eyes

General Practice Airways Group GPIAG Opinion Sheet No. 6 June 1999
Rhinitis Rhinitis is a common disorder, that has the potential to cause significant morbidity, impairing quality of life, and work/school performance. It is also responsible for considerable costs to the econovmy through treatment expenditure, and revenue lost through absence from work. Nasal problems will often hae co-morbid effects on the sinuses, throat, middle-ear, and lower respiratory tract. Rhinitis frequently co-exists with asthma, and there is evidence to suggest that untreated rhinitis may influence the development and control of asthma. Despite these observations, there is a common misconception that rhinitis is an unimportant condition, and as a result is frequently trivialised by patients and their doctors.
Definition
Rhinitis is a clinical diagnosis, made on the basis of recognising a symptom complex of two or more of the following: lasting for more than 1 hour on most days.

The Allergy Guide - Allergic Conditions
Perennial Allergic Rhinitis What are the causes? What are the symptoms? What is the treatment? What can be done to prevent perennial rhinitis? Perennial allergic rhinitis occurs all the year around and is usually triggered by indoor allergens such as housedust mite, cat and dog dander. This condition is similar to summer hayfever although they both have slightly different types of symptoms and occur when an allergen causes inflammation and irritation of the delicate linings of the nose and eyes. 16% of the population suffer with allergic rhinitis, of these, 8% have perennial symptoms, 6% perennial and seasonal symptoms and 2% have seasonal symptoms alone*. As with asthma and eczema , the incidence of allergic rhinitis is increasing and it runs in families. *Stats from ABC of Allergies, Edited by S Durham et al., British Medical Journal, 1998.

Definition
Rhinitis is inflammation of the mucous lining of the nose. Description Rhinitis is a nonspecific term that covers infections, allergies , and other disorders whose common feature is the location of their symptoms. In rhinitis, the mucous membranes become infected or irritated, producing a discharge, congestion, and swelling of the tissues. The most widespread form of infectious rhinitis is the common cold The common cold is the most frequent viral infection in the general population, causing more absenteeism from school or work than any other illness. Colds are self-limited, lasting about 3-10 days, although they are sometimes followed by a bacterial infection. Children are more susceptible than adults; teenage boys more susceptible than teenage girls; and adult women more susceptible than adult men. In the United States, colds are most frequent during the late fall and winter. Causes and symptoms Colds can be caused by as many as 200 different viruses. The viruses are transmitted by sneezing and coughing, by contact with soiled tissues or handkerchiefs, or by close contact with an infected person. Colds are easily spread in schools, offices, or any place where people live or work in groups. The incubation period ranges between 24 and 72 hours. The onset of a cold is usually sudden. The virus causes the lining of the nose to become inflamed and produce large quantities of thin, watery mucus. Children sometimes run a

Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever and Rose Fever) and Chronic Nasal Congestion June 2001 WHAT IS RHINITIS? The Nasal Passages and Daily Congestion The nose is separated into two passages by a wall of cartilage called the septum. The nasal passages are lined with a membrane that produces mucus. Mucus is one of the body's defense systems:
  • The mucus, a thin clear liquid, traps small particles and bacteria that are drawn into the nose as a person breathes.
  • The trapped bacteria usually remain harmless in healthy individuals.
  • Even under normal circumstances, this produces a cycle of congestion and decongestion that occurs continuously throughout the day.
  • When one side of the nose is congested, air passes through the open, or decongested, side. The sides alternate between being wide open and being narrowed.
Rhinitis If the congestion becomes severe or other changes occur that irritate the nasal passage, rhinitis develops. Rhinitis describes a group of symptoms that include following:
  • Runny nose.
  • Itching.
  • Sneezing.

Hayfever (Allergic Rhinitis and conjunctivitis). by Dr Adrian Morris. The problem with Hay fever and Allergic Rhinitis is that it is considered to be a trivial and inconsequential disease. Symptoms such as runny nose, itchy eyes and nose with sneezing and blockage are obviously not life threatening, but affect up to 25% of the population and are the cause of significant disability and cost to society. Patients may also experience fatigue, irritability, as well as mood, cognitive and sleep disturbance in addition to the nasal, ocular and throat symptoms. Allergic rhinitis has important co-morbid associations such as chronic sinusitis, secretory otitis media, asthmatic exacerbations, nasal polyps, sleep apnoea and dental malocclusion. Chronic allergic Rhinitis sufferers often have typical facial features called the "allergic facies". Nasal blockage and venous congestion predispose to the bluish discolouration of the lower eyelids called "allergic shiners", the characteristic linear creases under the eyelid are referred to as "Dennes lines". Constant nasal rubbing typifies the "allergic salute" and results in a prominent "nasal crease" across the nose. Continuous nasal blockage causes "nasal" speech and mouth breathing with disturbed sleep. This results in a high arched palate and the "long face syndrome" with dental crowding and malocclusion. Allergic rhinitis may be either seasonal or perennial:
