Definition of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA):
It is common - affecting : 2% of population - with 2.4 million cases estimated in the USA The Annual incidence of new cases is 48 / 100000 of the population .
It has enormous socio-economic impact There is a :
6 times probability of severe limitation of activity
90% of patients have significantly reduced function after 10 years 50% of patients are severe disability after 10 years 80% of patients are moderately disabled after 17yrs 30-50% of patients are able to work after 15 years Costs : $777 million (USA 1983) / year It is a mistake to think that this is a benign disease, and there is significant mortality associated with the disease. Mortality at 10 years is 26.7% vs 15% for the average population. Aetiology of RA The Synovium is the centre of the abnormality in the musculoskeletal manifestations of Rheumatoid Arthritis. This is the lining tissue in the joint, and is similar in structure to the lining around the tendons - the tenosynovium, and the lining surrounding Bursae - which are sacs of fluid containing structures that lubricate tendons as they attach to bone.

Summaries of the latest research concerning fish oils and rheumatoid arthritis Fish oils help reduce arthritis symptoms
EPSOM, UNITED KINGDOM. Dr. Gail Darlington of the Epsom General Hospital and Dr. Trevor Stone of the University of Glasgow have just released a major paper reviewing the current state of the art in regards to diet and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). About 2% of the world's population suffers from RA and the disease is three times more prevalent among women than among men. RA can strike at any age and involves an inflammation of joint tissues associated with the release of toxic substances in the synovium that leads to cartilage destruction. The main symptoms are swelling of the affected joints, morning stiffness, fatigue and general malaise. There is considerable evidence now that RA is caused by oxidative stress and involves an excessive production of pro-inflammatory compounds like tumor necrosis factor- alpha and interleukin-1 beta Research has shown that supplementation with fish oils (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) can markedly reduce interleukin-1 beta production and results in a significant reduction in morning stiffness and the number of painful joints in RA patients. Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (found in cooking oils and margarine), on the other hand, have been found to exacerbate RA symptoms. Fish oils have also been found useful in the management of systemic lupus erythematosus.

When my Grandmother was diagnosed with RA a few decades ago, the milder cases were simply put on aspirin, over 20 a day! If they didn't die of a bleeding ulcer, they were quickly disabled from the disease. The more severe cases might be put on prednisone or gold but was pretty much it. Not a lot to choose from.
As much as I hate having RA, I am glad I have it now. Never before have we had so many treatment options. In the last two years we've been bombarded with new drugs and treatments. We have so much to choose from. Most of us will live full productive lives, unlike those a generation ago.
There are a host of new drugs in development, and maybe even a cure in the works. The next generation of RAers may never even have to consider a joint replacement or take a liver damaging drug, what a wonderful world that will be! Disease Description

Rheumatoid arthritis
Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine by Kathleen Wright
Definition
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease causing inflammation and deformity of the joints. Other systemic problems throughout the body may also develop, including inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), the development of bumps (rheumatoid nodules) in various parts of the body, lung disease, blood disorders, and weakening of the bones ( osteoporosis
Description
The skeletal system of the body is made up of different types of strong, fibrous tissue called connective tissue. Bone, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons are all forms of connective tissue that have different compositions and characteristics. The joints are structures that hold two or more bones together. Synovial joints allow for movement between the bones being joined, the articulating bones. The simplest synovial joint involves two bones, separated by a slight gap called the joint cavity. The ends of each articular bone are covered by a layer of cartilage. Both articular bones and the joint cavity are surrounded by a tough tissue called the articular capsule. The articular capsule has two components: the fibrous membrane on the outside and the synovial membrane, or synovium, on the inside. The fibrous membrane may include tough bands of tissue called ligaments, which are responsible for providing support to the joints. The synovial membrane has special cells and many tiny blood vessels called capillaries. This membrane produces a supply of synovial fluid that fills the joint cavity, lubricates it, and helps the articular bones move smoothly about the joint.

Information and support to parents and children who deal with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

to Anna's JRA Page
about Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis~ Our daughter Anna was diagnosed with a mild case of JRA in July 1999. Anna has pauci-articular JRA, which means that she has four or fewer joints affected. For Anna, the JRA is limited to her left knee.
As Anna's Mom, I have gone through all kinds of emotions since she was diagnosed (even with a mild case!). I have spent hours at the computer researching every page I could find with some sort of information on JRA. That's why I wanted to do this page. I want to include many links to the varied sites available to make research less time-consuming for other parents and families. Over four years later (2003), I can tell you that life DOES go back to almost normalwith just a few extra things to think about and take into consideration. Things don't knock me off balance like they used to, but that's also in part to getting some of my own health issues taken care of (so parentsmake sure you take care of yourself, too!)
For any parent whose child has been diagnosed with a chronic illness, I think it is crucial for you to surround yourself with friends and family who will listen to you and encourage you and keep you from feeling totally overwhelmed by everything. For me, it was my quest for information which helped me feel a little more in control, and my friends and family who helped me to regain my emotional balance. I found a message board where other JRA moms (and a few dads occasionally) talk and ask questions and share information and give advice. It has been an additional great system of support, hope, and encouragement.

Child rheumatoid arthritis
Child rheumatoid arthritis can create distractions, which can distract their learning development. Treat this before it is too late.
Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) is rheumatoid arthritis that is diagnosed in children under the age of 16. It's a disease that not only attacks the joints, but also can affect the whole body. JRA can cause stiff joints, swelling, pain inflammation, and can cause permanent damage to the joints if not treated. It can also affect the nerves, heart, lungs and the eyes. Children should have their eyes tested at least once a year to make sure their eyes aren't being affected by JRA Parents need to be prepared to deal with their child's pain and suffering. They will need to be supportive and forgiving to a child who may become more irritable and whiny because they are always feeling sick or in pain. This isn't always easy especially for parents of very young children. Getting involved with other parents of JRA children is a great way to find the support you will need. bodyOffer(26746) The child may also need counseling to better understand that they are not being punished for anything and that the pain is from a disease and not because they were bad or anything.

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Village/8414/
The internet has been a valuable source of information and support for me, so I wanted to create a website that might in some ways be helpful to others. If you know a child who has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) or if you want to learn more about this condition, you may find it interesting to read about our personal experience. I'm not a medical professional ... and I don't play one on the web ... but I felt that others might benefit from the sort of information that I can share. You can also get information here about a popular email-based support and information group for people involved with Juvenile Arthritis, called The JRA List
At the very least, I hope that my collection of related internet links may be useful to you in helping to sort through the millions of arthritis-related websites in existence, while you search for more information and the answers to your questions about JRA. One of the main reasons for putting together this website is my personal commitment to helping spread awareness of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA). Until 1995, I didn't even know what those initials stood for. Unfortunately, most people still don't. Despite increasing numbers of cases, JRA has still not received a lot of public recognition. For many, it remains a more personal struggle. Hopefully, this will change. When there's greater public awareness of a significant health problem it's more likely there will be funding made available for its' study. With continued research comes the development of new, safer, and more effective medications. It is my hope that one day ... in the not so distant future ... a cure will be discovered. Possibly even a vaccine that will help prevent JRA in future generations of children.
