New drugs shown to lessen effects of rheumatoid arthritis
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Two new drugs can halt the progression of rheumatoid arthritis and lessen damage to the joints, according to two studies appearing Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. "This is the first time we have evidence that a drug can actually lessen joint damage in rheumatoid arthritis," said Dr. John Klippel of the Arthritis Foundation. "It hasn't been clear that drugs can do this."

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
What Is Arthritis?
Arthritis means joint inflammation, and refers to a group of diseases that cause pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of motion in the joints. "Arthritis" is often used as a more general term to refer to the more than 100 rheumatic diseases that may affect the joints but can also cause pain, swelling, and stiffness in other supporting structures of the body such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones. Some rheumatic diseases can affect other parts of the body, including various internal organs. Children can develop almost all types of arthritis that affect adults, but the most common type of arthritis that affects children is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
What Is Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is arthritis that causes joint inflammation and stiffness for more than 6 weeks in a child of 16 years of age or less. Inflammation causes redness, swelling, warmth, and soreness in the joints, although many children with JRA do not complain of joint pain. Any joint can be affected and inflammation may limit the mobility of affected joints.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis
The diagnosis and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a team effort between the patient and several types of health care professionals. A person can go to his or her family doctor or internist, or to a rheumatologist a doctor who specializes in arthritis and other diseases of the joints, bones, and muscles. As treatment progresses, other professionals often help: nurses, physical or occupational therapists, orthopedic surgeons, psychologists, and social workers. Education is Important Studies have shown that people who are well informed and participate actively in their own care experience less pain and make fewer visits to the doctor than do other people with RA. It is important to learn about RA and its treatments, exercise and relaxation approaches, patient/health care provider communication skills, and problem solving. Educational and support programs help people understand the disease and reduce their pain, to cope mentally and physically with the disease, and to have a greater sense of control. Diagnosing Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis can be difficult to diagnose in its early stages. There is no single test for the disease. In addition, symptoms differ from person to person and can be more severe in some people than in others. Also, symptoms can be similar to those of other types of arthritis and joint conditions, and it may take some time for other conditions to be ruled out as possible diagnoses. Finally, the full range of symptoms develops over time, and only a few symptoms may be present in the early stages. As a result, doctors use a variety of tools to diagnose the disease and to rule out other conditions.

Study may force re-think on rheumatoid arthritis
WASHINGTON (Reuters) People with rheumatoid arthritis, who have long been thought to have overactive immune systems, instead may have exhausted immune systems, researchers said on Tuesday. "What this study has shown for the first time is that patients with rheumatoid arthritis have prematurely aged immune systems," lead author Dr. Cornelia Weyand, a rheumatologist at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, said in a statement.

Rheumatoid Arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis affect the muscles, lungs, skin. blood vessels, nerves and eyes.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disease, meaning it affects the whole body and can result in symptoms like fever, fatigue and weight loss. The patient may feel unwell, depressed and easily tired.
WHO GETS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS? Anyone, at any age, can get rheumatoid arthritis. Most commonly it appears between the ages of 25 and 50. Women are affected about 3 times as frequently as men. Rheumatoid arthritis can occur in children.
WHAT CAUSES RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS? The precise cause of rheumatoid arthritis is not yet known. We know that the inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis appears to be due to a disorder in the body's immune defence system.
This leads to an immune reaction to the body's own cells. The continuous inflammation in the joints accounts for the damage of joints. Some researchers suspect that a virus may trigger the inflammatory process in rheumatoid arthritis although the disease occurs only in people with a genetic or inherited tendency toward the disease.
According to scientific evidence now available, rheumatoid arthritis is NOT CAUSED by :
