Parents, see how well you do on this simple quiz. Answers will follow the questions. True or False?
  • Doctors always recommend aspirin for infants, children and teenagers. In children aspirin should be used under medical supervision or special conditions only. If your child has any illness, chicken pox or the flu, you should give them aspirin for their fever, aches and pains without checking with a doctor. With a few rare exceptions, acetaminophen or ibuprofen are safer for children than aspirin. For headaches in children use acetaminophen, not aspirin. It is easy to tell the difference between "flu" symptoms and "cold" symptoms.
  • Answers
  • (T) Aspirin should only be used in children under special conditions like rheumatoid arthritis with proper medical supervision. (F) If your child has any illness, especially the chicken pox or flu, you should check with your doctor before give them aspirin for their fever, aches and pain. In most cases there will be safer alternatives such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen for their symptom relief.

REYE'S SYNDROME only happens in kids less than 15 years old. The cause is unknown, but it is strongly associated with Aspirin use during flu's. The liver - the detox center of the body - becomes inflamed and destroyed for unknown reasons. It is important because Reye's syndrome kills about half of kids who get it.
The Symptoms of Reye's Syndrome are:
    • Vomiting Increasing drowsiness Belly Pains Seizures Coma
If you suspect Reye's syndrome in your child, you will need to take them to a hospital without delay. NEVER give aspirin containing medications to your kids under 15 years old for fever control. Use Acetaminophen products instead.

What is Reye's Syndrome? Reye's syndrome is a rare, potentially fatal childhood disease. It usually strikes children under the age of 15 who are recovering from an upper respiratory illness, chicken pox, or influenza. What is the cause of Reye's Syndrome? The cause of Reye's syndrome is unknown, but studies have found a link with the use of aspirin during a viral illness. For this reason, aspirin should not be given without a doctor's approval to any child under the age of 16. Reye's syndrome is characterized by a severe increase of pressure in the brain and abnormal accumulations of fat in the liver. It develops as the child recovers from an infection, typically the first symptom is uncontrollable vomiting and nausea. Other early symptoms include lethargy, drowsiness, disorientation and irritability. The swelling in the brain may cause seizures, coma and the child may stop breathing. A child with Reye's syndrome needs immediate medical care. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better the chance for a successful recovery. Is there a treatment for Reye's Syndrome?

    What is Reye's Syndrome?
Reye's Syndrome is a disease which affects all organs of the body, but most lethally the liver and the brain. Reye's Syndrome is a two-phase illness because it is almost always associated with a previous viral infection, such as influenza, cold, or chicken pox. Scientists do know that Reye's Syndrome is not contagious and the cause is unknown Reye's Syndrome is often misdiagnosed as encephalitis, meningitis, diabetes, drug overdose, poisoning, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or psychiatric illness. Reye's Syndrome tends to appear with greatest frequency during January, February, and March when influenza is most common. Cases are reported in every month of the year. An epidemic of flu or chicken pox is commonly followed by an increase in the number of cases of Reye's Syndrome. When Reye's Syndrome develops, it typically occurs when a person is beginning to recover from a viral illness. Abnormal accumulations of fat begin to develop in the liver and other organs of the body, along with a severe increase of pressure in the brain. Unless diagnosed and treated successfully, death is common, often within a few days. A person's life depends upon early diagnosis. Statistics indicate an excellent chance of recovery when Reye's Syndrome is diagnosed and treated in its earliest stages. The later the diagnosis and treatment, the more severely reduced are chances for successful recovery and survival.

What research is being done? ... Organizations What is Reye's Syndrome? Is there any treatment? There is no cure for RS. Successful management, which depends on early diagnosis, is primarily aimed at protecting the brain against irreversible damage by reducing brain swelling, reversing the metabolic injury, preventing complications in the lungs, and anticipating cardiac arrest. It has been learned that several inborn errors of metabolism mimic RS in that the first manifestation of these errors may be an encephalopathy with liver dysfunction. These disorders must be considered in all suspected cases of RS. Some evidence suggests that treatment in the end stages of RS with hypertonic IV glucose solutions may prevent progression of the syndrome. What is the prognosis?

Reye's syndrome is a rare disorder that occurs after a viral infection. It results in sudden and severe decline in brain and liver function. What is going on in the body? Reye's syndrome can occur in individuals of any age following a viral illness. However, it is most common in children between the ages of 4 and 12. Studies have linked the syndrome to the use of aspirin by children who had chickenpox or other viral illnesses. Now children under the age of 19 are rarely given aspirin, and there are few cases reported each year. It is not known how aspirin and certain viral infections change the way the body functions. It is known that damage occurs to the mitochondria, the tiny organs in each cell that control cell energy and breathing. Autopsies of people with Reye's syndrome have shown significant fatty buildup in liver and brain cells. What are the signs and symptoms of the disease?

    Aspirin can cause Reye's syndrome
This article is about the dangers involved with in Reye's syndrome and giving young children and teenagers aspirin when they have a fever.
It came as quite a surprise to me when I found out how many parents of young children and teenagers are unaware of the dangers of giving them aspirin. I am not talking about the stomach upsets or ulcers that can be caused by aspirin and aspirin products. I am talking about a potentially lethal syndrom that is contacted by giving aspirin or aspirin products to young children and teenagers that have a fever. A doctor should always be consulted before given children aspirin because of this danger. bodyOffer(17393) Children can get Reye's Syndrom when they have a common infection and aspirin is given to them or a product that has aspirin in it. For whatever reason you think that your child may need it, it is too dangerous to take the chance. Reye's Syndrom is a syndrom is rare but if they get it, it is very serious. Reyes syndrom affects the organs of the body . It is a disease that they still do not know a lot about. What they have found is the most serious damage is done to the brain and the liver. Children that take aspirin during a fever have a much higher risk at getting this. Some of the symptoms are forceful vomiting that lasts for hours and gets worse instead of better, severe headaches, child seems to be in a stupor and just stares, rapid breathing, drowsiness, memory loss, disorientation, hallucinations. If your child has even one of these symptoms you should get medical attention for them immediately. Your child may not have all the symptoms and they may have only one of them. It is always best to be safe then sorry. The faster you get medical attention the better and the more chance your child will have for recovery. Early diagnosis is critical because of the risk of brain damage and or liver damage. If a child is diagnosed with Reye's Syndrome they are sent to a hospital where they can treat the symptoms that the child has. This is usually reversing the swelling in the brain.

Reye's (pronounced "rise") syndrome is a rare disease that children can get while they're recovering from any viral infection, including the flu , a cold , or chicken pox . Although the cause of the disease is unknown, studies have found that children are more likely to get it if they take aspirin. Since 1986, aspirin manufacturers have been required to include a warning on product labels advising against giving the drug to children for chicken pox or flu symptoms. But since you can never know for sure whether your child's symptoms are due to a virus, you should never give your child aspirin for any reason. meningitis diabetes , a drug overdose, or poisoning. If left untreated, the syndrome can quickly lead to liver failure, brain damage, and even death. An early diagnosis can significantly increase a child's chances of surviving. Reye's syndrome can be broken down into two phases. First, a person has a viral infection, such as a cold chickenpox , or flu . The second phase starts when symptoms of Reye's syndrome occur during recovery from the viral illness. Symptoms can also start 3 to 5 days after the viral illness begins.
A staging system for this disorder has been developed. Stages 1 to 3 represent mild to moderate illness. There is swelling in the brain and involvement of other body systems. Stages 4 and 5 represent severe illness, with
